Re: Things to do in Duluth

Except the Anchor Bar is over there.
True story. I believe the place has become even busier with its Diner's, Dives and Drive In's fame.
I hear from the UMD fans that the bathhouse place is pretty nice.
After we told you about it, you go every time tech is there :D

I recommend: Duluth Grill (A MUST), Uncle Louis Cafe (for huge portions for breakfast), Mexico Lindo, Pizza Luce (not Duluth specific but still good), Sammy's Pizza, Coney Island (my dad always took me there) and the Portland Malt Shop for some ice cream.

If you go to Two Harbors you have to drive the few more miles to Gooseberry Falls State Park (it is a North Shore tradition). Just keep your kids close and don't let them get too close to the edges. You can even hike down to the Lake and look at the Agate Beach.

Enger Tower has a great view of the whole city. Chester Creek Park and Lester River Park have the falls and rapids you are looking for within Duluth. Hawk Ridge is where you an see some nerdy bird watchers and cool birds.

As for shopping there is the spread out downtown area and the Dewitt Sietz Building in Canal Park has some interesting shops that your wife might like.

That's all I can think of for now...

.

Those are all good place and I also highly recommend both Northern Water's Smokehaus and the Brewhouse. Even though the street is seedier, "Deluxe Coney Island" on 1st street is WAY better than "Original Coney Island" on Superior St. If you're into Triple D, Gordy's Hi-Hat in Cloquet and At Sarah's Table/Chester Creek Cafe near UMD were also featured.

Recently went on a trip up the shore and Sugarloaf Cove has a beautiful beach, although also probably a bit farther than you want to go. If you head up to Gooseberry, eat at the Rustic Inn in Castle Danger. Great food and better pies than Betty's/

Is Uncle Louie's that dive-diner-type place? It has booths pretty much just on one side of the place, and the counter on the other? If so, so much YES. The omelettes are awesome.

And the Anchor Bar is overrated. I wasn't expecting a WHOLE lot, but it still was very meh. Frankly, it was just another check-off of the DDD list.

You must have gone on a bad day ( which happens), but I have had the best burgers of my life there, and I've had a lot of burgers.

I don't mean to sound like the burgers were terrible, they just didn't set themselves apart from other places I've had. That's all.

@ Duluth Grill

Nobody mentioned that Guy Fieri had been here!

Bring on the Dakota Dip! (insert Sioux poster joke here) :D

He also visited At Sarah's Table very near where I lived junior year. It was funny seeing his red car parked outside our yard while filming.

Re: Things to do in Duluth

Just curious, anyone ever done the inline marathon in Duluth? I'm thinking about doing it next year (too late to get in shape for this year's). Good time, or not?

The Triple D Duluth visits are as follows:
Gordy's Hi-Hat (Cloquet)
Duluth Grill
Northern Waters Smokehaus
At Sarah's Table/Chester Creek Cafe (same place)
Anchor Bar (Superior-was a "viewers choice," so Guy didn't go)

Betty's Pies and a couple places in Grand Marais were featured on Weird Foods with Andrew Zimmern. (as I mentioned earlier, I recommend the Rustic Inn in Castle Danger over Betty's Pies)

Re: Things to do in Duluth

Speaking of places owned by the Brewhouse guys...at Burrito Union right now waiting for a two-fisted Baltic with pineapple habenero salsa! Pumped!

Re: Things to do in Duluth

So, did the Duluth Grill, Sammy's and Mexico Lindo. Sammy's was the best meal of the trip. Either it's great pizza or we were just primed after a long day at the beach(es). I think it was both.

Hit Portland Malt Shop tonight after dinner.

Spirit Mountain was fun and Enger park was cool.

Never really explored Duluth much when we were here in the past. Always just passing through on our way to the BWCAW. Would only spend a night and hang out in the obvious spots like Canal Park and the beach down there.

Thanks for the suggestions all!

My buddy has done it (won his age class for amateurs) and he really likes it.

We are heading up to Silver Bay this Friday for a few days. Hope to wet a line somewhere with goldy Jr. Bringing the bikes for the Githchi Gummi trail.

Love that place. Although I'm sad they cut the fried potatoes from their breakfast Burritos. Not as good then.

Glad to see Gurth enjoyed our suggestions. Duluth rules :)

And thank you for that! We stopped at Rustic Inn yesterday on our way back from Silver Bay and it was great. My wife, son and I all have to avoid gluten and they were very accommodating to that, including having 4 pie choices that are gluten free! They bake a meringue crust for some of their cream pies and it is wonderful.

Glad I could help! I almost always get cream pies there, that crust is amazing!
