The worst way to Lose.

Re: The worst way to Lose.

I can't find video of it, but a few years a go during a high school playoff game at the Syracuse Carrier Dome the team with a 3 point lead has the ball in the closing seconds of the game. The QB takes the snap and intentionally runs the opposite direction into his own end zone to run out the clock. With no seconds left on the clock and thinking his victory secured he takes a very quick knee in his own end zone - able to afford the 2-point safety. The officials don't blow the play dead, but he runs with the ball through the back of the end zone and begins to celebrate.

What happens next...

That'd still be a safety. Or am I missing something...?

He's downed himself in the endzone, I'm thinking the refs don't see the knee down and he throws the ball up in the air right?? Kid should have ran all the way thru the endzone.

that's where I get confused, since kbranch said he ran through the back of the endzone with the ball.

After posting and receiving input from others off line I may have the story wrong. He did attempt to take a quick knee and give up the safety but the officials did not blow the whistle because the were not satisfied that his knee was down (picture a jubilant teenager running into the end zone, making the move to put his knee down while still running but never really getting it down). I thought that running through the back of the end zone with the ball resulted in awarding a touchdown to the other team, but I am told that it almost certainly would be called a safety. So he must have flipped the ball before going through the back of end zone and it was recovered by the opposing team for 6 points and the win.

Either way the kid was a goat - had he waited for the whistle before picking up his knee, or run through the back of the end zone, his team would have won. I think the kid was a senior, too.
