That never happened.
It was exaggerated in the movie Miracle...the final score was actually 5-0. :p

Thanks for fixing

Also thabnks for pointing out the movie Miracle, another huge push for USA hockey and the kids that play it. Again featuring..... Herb Brooks

Just like many backstabbed Woods on the PGA tour all the while, cashing a check for 300K for finishing 9th, where it would have been 65K 5 years earlier, we have many from Colorado Springs were always jealous of Brooks while begging for the compliments he garnered

Hokyclown has an eerie hatred for Phil Samuelsson. It's borderline unhealthy.

Hokydad = Cam Neely???!!!!

nope, just dont think nepotism should factor in teams of this magnitude

Re: The WJC Thread that HOKYDOPE didn't Start. USA! USA! USA!

I agree with the last part, they foot the bill they get to pick their team. Saying a deserving kid doesn't get a look must mean there is a underlying reason is not always true unless you are meaning biased politics are at play. The bottm line is politics on how they do things can be frustrating and difficult for families and players, but life isn't fair so get over it......

Not at all. What I meant is that maybe they have already determined that he doesn't fit for some intangible reason such as bad locker room guy, conflicts with other players/coaches, not good in the system that will be played, mom isn't hot enough, doesn't look good in blue, etc.

Selecting a team for a two week all star tourney goes far deeper than on-ice production or accomplishments and team chemistry is huge.

agreed

BUT, to many get invites for camp based upon previous/current team and who their dads are, zero to do with on ice success or the things you mention.

Re: The WJC Thread that HOKYDOPE didn't Start. USA! USA! USA!

The Tiger Woods analogy is pretty good, Hokydad. I think Brooks certainly made a huge difference for his contributions and elevated USA Hockey, triggering a boom in hockey registrations. Nobody is questioning that. I had the good fortune to know Herb a little bit, as well as Bob Johnson. Both had very strong personalities. Herbie loved rattling people's cages for his way of doing things, while Johnson generally preferred a more collaborative style of player development. Certainly, their was some bad blood between them that dated back to their college coaching days. I think you can rattle cages sometimes when needed, but eventually, you get more done when you can work from inside the tent.

The Czech B team fiasco was an outlier, rather than a state of the program result. US teams were competitve at the Olympic level. Remember the '76 US Olympic team finished a respectable fourth at Innsbruck under Bob Johnson and the '72 Olympic team won silver at Sapporro, Japan under Murray Williamson. Both teams has extensive pre-Olympic tours to develop. Going into 1980, we were a threat, but not medal favorites. Brooks certainly pushed them to a higher level to be sure, but it's not as if our talent level and coaching was terrible. On home soil, USA Olympic teams have always done well in the last 60 years. Gold at Squaw Valley (60), Gold in Lake Placid (80) and Silver in Salt Lake City.

Are you suggesting that Disney was told by USA Hockey how to make a Disney movie? I'm rolling on the floor over here.

Someone at Hokydope's group home should really be a bit more vigilent on monitoring internet usage.

But in regards to your last statement, apparently not or Krug would be there. His track record of success, winning, leadership is second to none. Absurd he is not there.

But in fairness, said the same thing last year and they won the Gold so I at least you support my supersticious role in locking up another win

To quote Herb Brooks' dad when the U.S. won gold in '60 and he was the last player cut, "Well... looks like they cut the right kid."

I don't know how to break this to you, so I'm just gonna say it. That wasn't Herb Brooks, that was Kurt Russell. :(

Re: The WJC Thread that HOKYDOPE didn't Start. USA! USA! USA!

Disney doesn't give a flying **** about USA "hcoeky" or Herb Brooks. If you think that movie was anything more that a "feel good underdog story" that will make $$$$$$ for Disney, you're delusional.
Disney owned the Anaheim Ducks, obviously produced the Mighty Ducks movie franchise and made Miracle.

Michael Eisner's sons played hockey, including one son who was a third string goaltender at DU.

Clearly Disney's (Eisner's) interest in hockey, is just one billionaires way of connecting with his kids. :D

Thats all well and good, but what I'm tryinig to say is, Disney did not make that movie as a way to further USA Hockey's or Herb Brooks' interests. It was a great story, that had the potential to pull in good numbers for Disney. They didn't have a hidden agenda of trying to brainwash hockey fans into believing that USA Hockey knows all.

Simply said a movie called Miracle came out. That movie and its success helped USA hockey and its expansion. Herb Brooks was the man behind the story and his successes were glorified in it.

Who cares what the agenda was or why it was filmed and made. The point was it helped and without Herb Brooks, you would not have had a miracle or a movie

...therefore USA Hockey or the national team program is bad because HB didn't like it and without HB there would be no Miracle or movie? How exactly did that movie "help" USA Hockey. Was there a sudden surge in new players that you can tie to that movie? If so (which I doubt), does that surge continue today, or was it merely a blip?

What are you trying to get at?

Nobody is arguing that Herb wasn't important. 1980 was 30 years ago though and what did Herb do of import after that? Don't even bring up 2002 as they didn't win and it was a bunch of all-stars anyway. I doubt that he held them after a game to do mountains.

The point is that a lot of other people have contributed since then and made USA Hockey what it is today. Herb was entitled to his opinion, but we're stronger now on the international level than ever before and I take great pride in that and hope they continue down the path they are on.

The Miracle on Ice will probably always be the most significant hockey event in our country's history, but I for one am glad that it's no longer a "miracle" when we win an international competition. This has only begun to be the case in the past decade or less and is due directly to the national program and the great young talent that it is honing.

well said....

agree with everything you say but dont buy the national program being the key, not at ll
pat kane would ahve won a cup last year with or without it.
the main thing I have noticed out of natl program is the move to more kids going major junior vs D 1 where in the past , that was not always the case

parise, morin, fowler, carlson(oh, I forgot he wasnt good enough to get an invite to tryouts) and amny others are not 1% better because they went there. and if so, who cares if 4 or 5 players are better when we spend 3 or 4 million to do it

natl program is a joke

funny how Prviterra for example is doing way better this year in USHL after leaving natl program. Thats what happens when you egt quality coaching and a great league.

If all these kids at natl team played in USHL, they would be exactly the same, not 1% better for the 4 million a bunch of kids funded

look at the admin and who runs NDTP. All scared they might lose their jobs and in a million years will never get rid of it

You always bring up Kaner. How do you know that he's not better for having been in the NTDP?

Did he tell you this? Did you secretly have a 2nd Kaner clone that you put through a more typical program who turned out exactly the same? Or is it just your opinion that you cannot prove or even back up with decent bs?

Maybe, the super-skilled, but undersized Kaner was able to learn how to function in a world of guys who are larger than him while in the NTDP and playing against college and junior players that are older, stronger and bigger than him.

I can picture Kane as a Pee Wee player flying all over the ice and scoring lots of points, but not playing an even remotely complete two-way game (not that he really does that now). Maybe the NTDP helped him to get better at this? Maybe?

Point is, you're talking out your butthole and I have no idea why I'm even engaging you.

Nope, I don't have enough vacation to burn, since I'll be using some on the Frozen 4 and Final 5 this year.
