The University of Notre Dame Hockey: 09-10. Let's Live It Up!

Re: The University of Notre Dame Hockey: 09-10. Let's Live It Up!

Congrats to Calle w/ his 2nd hat trick of the season! They said 6 is the highest number of goals in a game this season...! Does anyone know what the highest goals in a game is ever? someone asked me tonight and I thought I would ask!

I consider the records in WCHA/CCHA seasons to be the ones that matter most (at all, really) and in the 31 seasons in which Notre Dame competed in either league 14 was the most goals scored, in 1971 against Boston College. I believe the Notre Dame record book has the record at 18 and it was either in the pre-dawn era or the 1980s during the independent era. And yes I know counting the current season it is only officially 30 seasons in either the CCHA or WCHA but I consider the 1971-72 season to be worthy, as we were probationary members of the WCHA and played a WCHA schedule.

Re: The University of Notre Dame Hockey: 09-10. Let's Live It Up!

It goes without saying that was one of the best -- if not THE best effort on the season. One sure way to avoid third period woes is to lay up a 5 spot in the second and take a 5 goal lead into the last period. Scoring 6 against a team like the Lakers is not easy. They are on you pretty closely the whole night and when they aren't, they still usually tend to keep things pretty clogged up in all the good shooting areas.

Notre Dame relentlessly forechecked most of the game and was constantly looking to finish both their checks and chances the entire game. Once they got things rolling in the first they totally dominated for 30 minutes. The shots came a little easier in the third for Lake State, but only a couple were of the quality scoring chance variety.

Congrat to Calle for another hattrick, to Ryan Thang on another great game and to Pat Gaul for his first goal and Kevin Nugent for his first point. THIS is the Notre Dame hockey team I have been waiting to see since March.

Re: The University of Notre Dame Hockey: 09-10. Let's Live It Up!

So another concussion and another player out. According to the USCHO arena reporter recap Cole left the game after being hit from behind and missed the remainder of the game, and it sounds like he will miss today as well.

What in the world is going on with all the head shots? I think it is time for some frontier justice. You take out one of our guys, we're taking out one of yours. No cheap blind side shots where our guys can hide behind "you have to keep your head up" or retaliatory hits from behind. Drop the f@#$^ng gloves and beat the living crap out of the responsible party. And if the responsible party has already been tossed out of the game by a ref, pick the best player left on the bench and do the job on him. I don't care if it costs us a skater for the next game. Better to miss one guy who is healthy and can come back for the next game than have yet another guy missing multiple games, or the rest of the season, for more post-concussion trouble.

I am tired of this. I don't like to hide behind injuries as the reasons for disappointing seasons, but only a fool would think it hasn't played a huge role in Notre Dame being just one game over the .500 mark.

I thought they said Cole was back out on the ice after his hit. I listened to it on the radio and after he was taken off the ice a couple minutes later they had said he was back out on the ice. I could be mistaken or he may have gone off the ice after that.

Re: The University of Notre Dame Hockey: 09-10. Let's Live It Up!

Cole did return moments after the hit. Im sure his ice team was reduced in the 3rd due to the score. Condon played in the 3rd period and Im assuming he took Cole's minutes.

I went to the game. It was a combination of the Irish playing very good and the Lakers playing very poorly.

Re: The University of Notre Dame Hockey: 09-10. Let's Live It Up!

Congrats to Kyle Lawson and Mike Johnson for weekly CCHA honors.

Johnson was great on the weekend. I thought Philips would play one night, but like all year, I was wrong on the goalie rotation yet again...:o Not a ton of quality chances for the Lakers, but certainly enough over the two nights. 71 saves on 73 shots is impressive no matter what. Now if our goalies could just figure out the shootout.

I get a kick out of the defensive player awards, as they usually go to the d-man with the biggest offensive contribution. Lawson's offense this year hasn't been a problem but rather, like many of his teammates, his play in his own end has often come up short. Lately though, it seems as if a number of Irish players, Lawson included, are beginning to look a little more like we are used to seeing them, and Kyle was certainly effective in his own end this weekend.

A big thanks to Craig P., the eternal optimist whose glass is always half full, for the encouraging info about the PWR. The post-post season is by no means out of the question PWR-wise. If I understand it correctly, this has nothing to do with possible league performance in Detroit, either. Granted, all the stars have to align, Mercury has to be in retrograde, I have to find a penny facing heads up...;)

Your boys aren't exactly innocent either, about 5 minutes before Cole got hit by Acton, Chad Nehring came across and Cole was the one who blatantly elbowed him in the head when he could have kept him shoulder down and landed a perfectly clean hit...It just so happend that Nehring didn't end up hurt after recieving a dirty hit and Cole did.

Incidentally, I neglected to post here, this was a good weekend for ND PWR-wise; despite only getting three of four points (NCAA-wise), our win-out RPI and PWR both went up to 15th thanks presumably to worse performance by one or more of the teams ahead of us.

Elbows high is certainly a penalty that should be called, and Notre Dame is just as guilty of that as any other team. But there is a major difference in going in elbows high and checking someone from behind or into the boards. Until we develop eyes in the back of the helmet and padded boards, both those penalties have a much higher chance of seriously hurting someone than does an elbowing penalty. We have lost zero players this year to an elbowing penalty. We have lost at least 3 players this year to a checking from behind or boarding.

Just because your team hasn't lost a player to elbowing and they have to boarding doesn't make it any more serious...it is very easy to get concussed at mid-ice if a player takes a shot to the head, ask Lindros, LaFontaine, etc.

No where in the current discussions of all the injuries suffered by Notre Dame players has it been stated that our guys are all angels. Hockey players sometimes deliver cheap shots, and Notre Dame players are as guilty of this on average as any other team. But shots to the head are epidemic right now in hockey, and our team has suffered inordinately as a result. We've lost four players for extended periods of time who otherwise would have started every game for this team and all were to cheap shots that all parties agree should have resulted in penalties. Some did, with additional game misconducts or disqualifications added on. To me whenever a person uses a t i t-for-tat argument in a situation like this their point of view loses all credibility. Perhaps you should just hang out in your own thread and b!tc$ and moan a little more about the officiating, something I have yet to do this season despite the fact a couple of the aforementioned hits were not called and we've lost a lot more around here than I would have expected.

If you had some of the ridiculous calls against you that we had on Saturday you would be complaining too..Chad Nehring had two options: Stop and spray some snow on the goalie (which he did) or not stop and railroad the goalie, drawing a penalty and possible suspension, and risking injury to himself and the goaltender. He chooses the smarter, safer option and is rewarded with a 2 minute penalty for "spraying the goaltender" an offense that almost always draws a warning before a penalty is called and that was called at a crucial point in the game..The complaints of officiating arent just about this past weekend it is been a cumulative theme over the course of this season. I'm sorry that your team is underachieving but don't try and get all self-righteous on me, using injuries as an excuse isn't any more honorable than using officiating as an excuse.

When I posted about losing more around here than I expected, I meant in terms of man-games lost due to all the injuries and some of the non-calls following a couple of the more egregious hits. Every team deals with injuries, that is a part of the game, but this year we've lost more everyday players for longer periods of time to injuries than in my memory.

And by the way I never complain about officiating following a Notre Dame loss. It only looks like sour grapes and your point gets lost. FWIW, I probably agree with your point about Nehring's penalty in the second period, though. I wouldn't have made that call, except for the circumstances of the game and of the weekend. It was a litttle chippy out there and I know for a fact Notre Dame's emotions are on high right now when it comes to anything they may perceive as cheap shots.

Re: The University of Notre Dame Hockey: 09-10. Let's Live It Up!

Whenever I hear the argument about not being able to avoid running into a goalie, I'm reminded of something an NHL commentator (Pierre McGuire? Darren Pang? don't remember) said a few years back. "If it were a pit of snakes instead of a goalie, he'd stop."

Anyhoo.

UNO is making their last stop in South Bend this weekend, at least as a regular season league opponent. They are led by Rich Purslow who has 19 points. He's followed by defenseman Eddie Del Grosso with 18 points, and Jeric Agosta and Nick Fanto each with 17. ND is led by Calle Ridderwall (smiley. heart.) (man would I kill for his jersey) with 22 points. He's also followed by a defenseman, Kyle Lawson, with 20 points. Ben Ryan and Kevin Deeth round out the top 4 with, like UNO, 17 points.

UNO's PP is middling at 16.9%. They are led by Matt Ambroz with 5 PPG's. The Mavericks have scored 23 PPG's and given up 19 PPG's against in 28 games. Their PK is decent at 86.3%. UNO averages about 6.5 penalties/game. ND's PP is coming along at 19.8%. Ridderwall leads the team (and is 4th in the country) with 10 PPG's. The Irish have scored 32 PPG's and given up 13 also in 28 games. Ryan Thang has also added 6 man-up tallies. Their PK is tops in the country at 90.1%, which is good since they average over 8 penalties/game.

UNO scores 2.68 GF/game and are 8-4-3 when scoring first. They give up 2.75 GA/game. ND averages 2.46 GF/game and is similar to UNO going 7-3-4 when scoring first. The give up 2.18 GA/game, good for 6th in the nation.

John Faulkner has been the goalie of record for the vast majority of UNO's games. He's 9-7-4 with a GA of 2.5 and a save % of .905. Mike Johnson is 8-6-4 with a GA of 2.03 (6th in the country) and a save % of .929 (5th in the country).

As I sit here thinking about fate and how things happen for a reason (long story), I can't help thinking about all of ND's injuries, offensive struggles, etc. and believing that things will even out in the end. The first step towards destiny is believing in your dreams.

Any penalty has the ability to injure, just as stepping onto the ice poses potential problems (watch me skate and you will understand that one). However, the potential for injury ratchets up with penalties such as boarding or checking from behind. Hence the emphasis for a more severe penalty for those infractions.

Re: The University of Notre Dame Hockey: 09-10. Let's Live It Up!

Don't think your link is working B.... Here is the story.

So, does anyone else think it may be time to embrace the "wait 'til next year" attitude? They can't seem to sustain the energy for more than a game or two, and since I'm betting it's in large part to playing too few people for too many minutes, it isn't going to change enough to accomplish anything this season. Last night they looked squarely behind the 8 ball when UNO scored their 3rd goal of the second period, and they never seemed to kick it in gear in the third period. Again. Watching the parade of injured players, with Cole followed by Maday, followed by Ruth, followed by any semblance of depth, was all it took to realize the team they can dress is pretty much exactly what we see. A break even prospect, probably, at best.

After appearing to get over the hump at least a little for a couple of the games the last two weekends, many of the things that were leading to losses in the first few weeks of the season returned with a vengeance last night. Lack of communication, lack of puck control, tentative play in the offensive zone (I counted just 4 shots in all and just one on net after 11 minutes of play in the first), and letting two golden opportunities to take, or retake, control slip away unused. The four-minute power play in the second, and a span in the third where UNO got caught on the ice for a long shift and then iced it twice and had the same players skating for nearly 3 minutes led to few offensive chances and only a handful of shots on net. A goal at either of these junctures and the outcome could very well have been different.

I'm resigned to the near certain likelihood of this team needing to win the Mason Cup in Detroit to make use of their host status in Fort Wayne. But even that takes at least a 3 game winning streak, something this team has yet to accomplish this season after doing it 13 times in the previous 3 seasons.
