The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

When Mom & Dad moved to MA, they rented out the NJ home. Tenent #2 did not pay, and it turned out he was the son of a county judge. Try getting them evicted! Eventually he left, owing Mom (Dad had since passed) a lot of repairs and outstanding rent.

Only people who have been in this kind of situation completely understand what you are saying. The law works in some very strange ways-the poor underdog who sticks you for money is often protected. Our neighbor had a similar situation-they tried in vain for an eviction to be carried out for almost 4 years. Their tenant did leave however when they were arrested for a criminal ofense and sentenced to 18 months in jail. Of course they never did see one cent of the owed rent or money for repairs accumulated over a 40+ month period.

I'd take it right to the state level and skip the county altogether. Conflict of Interest is usually a pretty good reason.

Perhaps for #2 I should make this the investments thread instead of the Stock Market thread. I'd certainly like to hear some opinions on anyone else who is trying out P2P lending.
You're funding student loans to RPI students?

I'm not an accredited investor, so the P2P company will not accept me as a lender. However, there are some P2P companies that do this, and RPI is one of the schools that they service.

It seems like every time Amazon has an earnings call, they basically put their stock on lightning sale. Jeebus.

Last four days of performance on earnings calls:
-10%
-8.x%
-11.7%
-10% premarket today

lulz

I should have shorted Amazon yesterday. :p

Watching Valero at the moment. Their next earnings release is scheduled for Nov 4. At roughly 8.5x earnings, there might be something there.

Does the stock start moving when the call is announced, or when the call takes place? If this is a normal pattern on each one, you may want to keep that in mind three months from now. ;) Of course, 4Q generally creates good buying opportunities.

Accountability. It's a helluva drug.

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

Folks, just remember that this sort of stuff is illegal in the USA. It'll usually be referred to as "insider trading". http://www.infowars.com/airasia-ceo-dumped-shares-days-before-flight-disappeared/
Ah yes, I see. The CEO planned to have his company's plane take a nosedive over the ocean and he therefore sold his company stock before it too sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Yes, it makes perfect sense to anyone who has yet to take his daily dose of daffy pills.

Whether it is coincidental or there is a connection (which has been suspected with 9/11), the illegality of insider trading is still something to remember. My double whammy rule when it comes to investing prevents this for the most part. ;)

Congratulations! You have a double whammy shablamo rule. Prior to 9/11 the economy was showing signs of weakness, and the travel industry (stock prices included) is always hit hard during a bad economy. The fact that 9/11 came to pass made the inevitable drop some about quicker, and likely heavier, than we otherwise would have seen.

Did the CEO sell all of his stock in the holdings company? It says he sold 940M shares, but it's not uncommon for a CEO to have many times that number of shares. Perhaps he's just diversifying his portfolio and he got lucky on the timing. Bill Gates used to sell off huge chunks of MSFT all the time as he was moving his assets around or funding his charity. Was he foretelling the rise of GOOG and APPL? Oh, wait, he was a heavy investor in APPL back in the 90's while the company was flat on the floor, on the depths of closing down, perhaps he still is an investor! The man is a market manipulating mastermind!

Le Chiffre had the same plan to short Skyfleet.

He didn't even sell the company stock. He sold the company's insurance stock, which lost a whopping .5%. I'm not sure how you'd even distinguish that from normal market activity.

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

Might be an interesting day tomorrow. The Dow's 50-day simple moving average is about to cross the 100-day SMA. The S&P500's is threatening to do the same. It's doubtful anything will happen, but it could be an interesting day depending on how the hive mind reacts in a volatile market.

These are all trailing indicators and I should probably note that technical indicators are borderline voodoo.

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

The Dow's 50-day simple moving average is about to cross the 100-day SMA.

Cross as in drop below it? And this is bad because it means the mean of the last 50 days is lower than that of the prior 50, which could indicate a prolonged bear market?
