The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

If there's a bubble of anything, it's the fiat currency. We're printing our way to this "strength" that people think is happening because of Dow 13000. Eventually we'll either have to go to a major recession, succumb to hyper-inflation, or go into World War III.

I consider the euro to be a player in any future declines in our major indecies. When you consider any exposure to movements or even defaults ( much like 2008), there could be another situation where there isn't enough liquidity in the system to pay off CDS or similar bets on the market.

People will panic whenever someone from over there steps to the mic. However, the euro is not the only currency with problems. After looking it up, the only two countries with AAA ratings across the board at this point are Canada and Australia.

Yesterday, Apple broke a record to become the largest company, in terms of market cap, in history, beating out Microsoft during the dot-com boom.

Think they split anytime soon? $600+ for a stock makes it out of the reach for ordinary investors.

I highly doubt it, given so much is dependent upon their proprietary hardware. I'd say give it a couple of years when their stuff starts to break. The price will eventually come down. I don't think they can handle this sort of momentum.

Have they announced a dividend yet? I know they were talking about it, but Jobs was very much against it, since he preferred to have the capital in house to develop new products.

They have as a 2.65% quarterly dividend, starting in fiscal Q4, which ends in September along with a small stock repurchase program to prevent dilution from stock options.

Adjusting for inflation, MSFT's 1999 market cap would be about $824 billion in today's dollars.

Re: The Stock Market thread: BUY! BUY! BUY! Sell, sell, sell...

Yes, I understand that. In nominal dollars Apple is the winner. But when you compare a valuation from 1999 to 2012, and you adjust for inflation, MSFT closing in December 19999 would have had the equivalent of well over $820 billion in 2012 market cap dollars.

It was more for the benefit of those that wanted more information, but I get your point. :)

That having been said, I still think the company will have a fall soon.

P/E was only around 14 on Friday. I think it'll take an anti-trust suit to knock them down some. For whatever reason, they have such an enthusiastic customer base that their revenues should remain strong for the next few years. If the anti-trust suit doesn't come along, we'll see what happens when the lag of Job's "spark" has abated. Will Apple falter like in the 90's or is there enough clout and direction now that they can find new talent to lead?

The second a company comes up with something just as reputable, yet much less expensive, they're toast. Apple was the personal computer premier in the 80's, then IBM started getting on board with Microsoft, and the fruit company was toast. The same thing will happen again.

It already seems to be happening to a certain extent with phones, though they are still very strong there and it will be awhile before cheaper competing phones can really drive into their turf. And in the meantime they have such a dominance in tablets it makes up for whatever ground has been lost in smartphones in the last few years. The question is, what comes after tablets, since even with those you'd have to figure someone will eventually find a way to undercut them (Samsung/Google maybe)?

Music players. After all, people go goo-goo-ga-ga over their iPod.

The iPhone 5 will be telling, as any lead that Apple has had with regards to phone quality has effectively evaporated. Time will tell if the same thing happens with the iPad. The issue if that with the phone company subsidies for new phones, they don't have to compete on price with phones as much as other consumer products because the last thing that ATT and Verizon don't want to lose access to the iPhone of charge more than the other. Another question is what will Apple's next new product be and how successful will it be.

As for what happened with PC's in the early 80's, IBM was in such a hurry to get out a personal computer, that they contracted with Microsoft to produce the operating system and with Intel to produce the processor instead of developing both in house. The end result was that other companies were able to build computer that used the Intel chip and Microsoft operating system, undersell IBM and do all of the same things. It's a huge reason that IBM got out of the personal computer business not long after the tech bubble burst and transitioned to more of an IT management company.

This is very true. They did buy up a bunch of the software companies that provide to businesses, such as Rational and Telelogic.

Here's the thing, though, they've been so good at cross selling their goods, getting people over to their PC platform that they have undoubtedly got a number of consumers feeling locked into the feel of the OS X.xx UI and then integrated that same feel of their PC's OS into iOS that they may have dang near created a virtual perpetual motion machine so long as the build quality of their devices remains high and their software isn't too buggy. It'll take something huge -a real game changer- to get people to switch. Thus the whole cult-like following of their goods*.

*This comes from a happy user of an iPhone 4, though I own no other Apple products and do think back to a few interface features I liked better about my Android phone.

Always remember that things that can't run forever will eventually come to an end. Since Jack Kilby's integrated circuit came out, people have been used to not repairing electronics and instead just buying something new (very sad, IMO). The warranties will run out in a year or two, though. We'll see then.
