The States: Where We Wish Texas Would Secede Already

Re: The States: Where We Wish Texas Would Secede Already

Looks like Katie Hill resigning handed the GOP a House seat back in an all mail election.

Democrats sleeping in again.

That wasnt it...the Dem was doomed because of their position on Independent Contractors. (kind of a hot issue right now) I believe they will both run again against each other as this only fills out the rest of Hills term.

Will their respective positions on independent contractors change in six months, or will the issue become any less significant then? Not very far away.

If you lost by a dozen, what good is it for the Dems to run the same person in a district you won by 9 in 2018?

If I'm not mistaken I think Cali had a primary that was filled with candidates and the two winners were awarded the spots in the special election (for the rest of this term) and the November election (for a new two year term.)

Please elaborate?

California passed a law aimed at Uber et al to make more people employees rather than independent contractors. Problem is it impacted a lot of others in more traditional roles that are properly independent contractors.

This was a district that had been GOP forever before Hill won it. Just because it's CA doesn't mean it's a shoe-in for Dems. It's Orange County, not SF.

Remember, blue swept OC in 2018. Things are changing. They actually have some college educated people there now. It's not Reaganland anymore.

Re: The States: Where We Wish Texas Would Secede Already

Seems weird that an independent contractor law passed in California a year ago would be the deciding factor in a Congressional election, one way or the other. Aren't the independent contractor rules typically a creature of a state's own unemployment, workers comp and payroll laws? I don't really remember a lot of discussion on them in Congress.

The dem candidate was an assembly woman who voted for and supported the legislation.

True, I'm not saying they didn't, and I'm not saying that isn't a key place to get and hold going forward. But it's somewhere where there might be a few blips in the meantime. It's not like the Dems lost Berkeley.

And the Wisconsin vote was in a very red, rural area. No alarm bells on that one for the dems

Special elections typically draw much lower turnout, even when they’re for congressional seats, than the on-schedule elections.

Which means it’s somewhat easier, paradoxically, for a relatively unimportant issue to become a galvanizing one at the right time. It may only attract a few hundred supporters, sure, but when your margin is a few hundred with 20-25% turnout, those few hundred might end up swinging it.

Re: The States: Where We Wish Texas Would Secede Already

It wouldnt be an issue most of the time, but when unemployment is through the roof and you are (inadvertently) making it harder for people to make money in the Gig Economy that becomes a problem. It is unfortunate timing because they arent wrong the idea is to stop companies from denying benefits to employees by making them ICs. (if I read it right)

538 discussed it yesterday if you go back and look for it.
