Ummm..no they weren't, but nice try. I'll start with how there's no state sponsored religion in the Constitution, something many a conservative would like to see provided that religion was their own.
On the other hand, they did have slavery as being legal for a time, so perhaps you're right about their conservative leanings...

I don't think you need to deny them care in true emergency situtations. You just need to be willing to stick them with the bill. Make it so the hosiptal can garnish their wages or receive a portion of their gov't benefits if they don't pay. Doesn't take care of all senarios, but he does provide a disincentive for many of them.

I thought we were talking about "conservative" as a political point of view; I did not realize you had your own private definition. No wonder we can't have a direct conversation.
To me a political "conservative" means something like:
> "trust the wisdom of your elders"
> each person is responsible for the consequences of his/her actions
> all people are fallible and are prone to making mistakes; therefore government should be limited in scope and comprised of checks and balances so that no one group ever can have exclusive control of all avenues of government
Now, this derives from centuries of tradition (e.g., Burke and Franklin come immediately to mind) and since you seem preoccupied with transient phenomena (the past few years) I'm not surprised we rarely find ourselves talking about the same thing, especially as your first recourse seems to be ridicule while I find genuine value in all four of the primary political quadrants.
I'm fed up with today's politicians across the spectrum (with a few notable exceptions) since almost all of them only seem to care about the next election and short-term partisan advantage at the expense of long-term common good.

The founders fail to live up to this definition of "conservative," too. In 1776, the "trusting wisdom of elders" position would have been Tory/Loyalist.
