The Power of the SCOTUS Part VII - The Bedrock of the Republic!

Re: The Power of the SCOTUS Part VII - The Bedrock of the Republic!

Back at you, Bob. Your frontrunner is the guy claiming that Mexico makes a concerted effort to send all of their criminals to the US. Funny how he doesn't insist on a border wall with Canada, despite stating that (paraphrase here) "a country without borders is not a country at all". Last I checked, most of our border with Canada was a cleared strip of forest in the wilderness at the 49th parallel, which is often crossed by drug runners who time it in order to dodge drone surveillance aircraft. So what difference does a wall (that Mexico will build and pay for :D) on the southern border make? And while we may concede that the vast majority of illegal immigration is coming from the south, that does not excuse Mr. Trump's broad brush, does it?
If you were paying attention at all, I've said multiple times, including yesterday, that I would never vote for Trump.:rolleyes:

This used to be a country where even non-christians could speak up without being personally attacked. That has sure changed. Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?
Be part of the solution, not the problem.

Serious question: if it were Hillary vs Trump, wouldn't you have to? You know if Hillary wins we'll get one or two pro-choice SCOTUS justices. With Trump, god only knows what we'll get -- it will depend on the shirt he's wearing that day. But some chance is better than none, right?

I've wondered the same thing about what I would do if an unacceptable character (say... Trump!) won the Dem nom and ran against a garden variety Republican. I can't sit it out for the same reason that I can't leave things alone on a message board, so I'd either have to vote for a doomed third party as a protest or vote D. In my younger, wilder days I'd have voted third party. Now I don't think I would -- the stakes are just too high to let the bad guys oil their way into power again.

The Des haven't nominated anyone like that in a while. And, the Dems haven't had anyone running like that for a while. None in this cycle at least. There may have been a 1% poll level for a psycho out there but nothing like we see with Trump, Cruz, Carson this time and Bachmann last time.

Did David Duke run as a Dem? I can't remember whether he was before or after the racists jumped from the Dixiecrats to the GOP.

He's the last utter loon that comes to mind that was, at least at one point, a Dem. Before that you have to go back to George Wallace and Strom Thurmond.

Edit: OMG, how soon we forget!

I thought it was pretty obvious I was having some fun playing Bob. :)

I think I'd have to go third party, as much as I don't like the thought of it in many ways. In such a situation I'd know I'm doomed to have someone governing who will be bad for the country, so it won't really matter. At such times I think of Isaiah 9:7: "There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace". Now there's big government I can get behind! :)

Usually my default is the less bad, meaning the Republican candidate, but I really dislike (and always have) Trump's arrogance and disrespect and boorish conduct. He's a bully and make the rest of the candidates seem like kindly decent folks (which takes some doing).

Fair enough. I really wasn't sure what you were trying to get at, but usually you harass me, so I figured that was the case this time.

That's great. I like his foreign policy (Isaiah 2:4):

And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
Maybe we've found our candidate. :)

I think Christie is just as much a bully and a boor as Trump.

Always liked Isaiah 2:4. Isaiah has some good stuff. Always liked this out of Chapter 40 also:

He it is who reduces rulers to nothing,
Who makes the judges of the earth meaningless.
Scarcely have they been planted,
Scarcely have they been sown,
Scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth,
But He merely blows on them, and they wither,
And the storm carries them away like stubble.

Christie has always struck me as your stereotypical rough around the edges easterner and certainly is no shrinking violet, but to me Trump is in another league. I don't think I've ever seen a candidate who has had any traction be like Trump is.

Re: The Power of the SCOTUS Part VII - The Bedrock of the Republic!

The opening of 51 is great, too:

Look to the rock from which you were cut
and to the quarry from which you were hewn

That's good writing, folks.

My personal favorite, at least in recent memory.

He ran as a Republican for Governor I believe around 1989 maybe? He may have run for Senate too later on. Believe he eventually became an independent, but now he'd be to liberal for the GOP! :D

If I am that dedicated to my beliefs, I would have left a long time ago.

I've often said that if my company did something really ****ty, it probably leave the second the opportunity came. Which is a really crap position to be in because I'm sort of at my dream job.

I'm pretty sure she's stayed in her job not despite her beliefs but rather because of her beliefs - she can't be a martyr without first facing the firing squad and delaying our descent into Hell by being on the sidelines, after all.

Ignorant question: is that really how it works? Does one appeal to a particular justice? I assumed that you just file with the SCOTUS in general.

You generally apply for a stay to the justice that is responsible for the circuit, though in theory you can ask any of them (the justices discourage such forum shopping as much as any other judge would, though). That person can act alone or refer it to the full court for consideration.

Petitions for cert always go to the full court.
