The Power of SCOTUS VIII redux: IX is being blocked by the Senate.

Re: The Power of SCOTUS VIII redux: IX is being blocked by the Senate.

The premise of the article that Rover posted in the last thread seems to think Obama is outthinking the Republicans. He's not. He never has.

Re: The Power of SCOTUS VIII redux: IX is being blocked by the Senate.

A paper bag could out think the GOP on this one. They shot themselves by pre-empting the process just hours after Scalia's death was announced.

For someone who is supposedly a master politician, McConnell screwed up badly on this one. There's no way to win.

Re: The Power of SCOTUS VIII redux: IX is being blocked by the Senate.

McConnell has done stupid things like that with the Obama repeatedly. "Our goal is to make Obama a one-term President." Does that ring a bell for anybody? He gets giddy over sticking it to him, and doesn't think about the best way to actually execute such plans. Instead, he blunders about, telling everyone who'll listen what the overall jassackery of a plan is, and not think about how the public will actually perceive such news. He's as savvy as a gold fish.

Right. Because the ACA got repealed, taxes didn't go up on the wealthiest earners, and he lost his re-election bid, leading to an even more far right conservative taking Scalia's place?

Don't forget how the 2013 shutdown forced defunding of Planned Parenthood.

Nobody said Mitch was a Rhodes Scholar.

The smart move would be to schedule hearings and drag the process out until the Congre$$ recesses for the elections. Then BHO names a recess appointment and the new Prez names his/her own nominee.

Forgot about that one!

Look, I get it. I too am not thrilled with the pick at face value, but upon reflection I'm not sure he ever gets a vote. Holding hearings and then a nomination after the election, with the long Christmas break that they take isn't enough time to confirm a SCOTUS I wouldn't think unless they really fast track it. I'm guessing Obama knows this. Would Hillary re-nominate him next year? Don't know....

No. No reason to settle if she wins. Even if there is a GOP Senate she'll have a mandate by the Republicans' own logic: the people spoke!

This is yet an other reason why the GOP strategy was so mind-blowingly stupid. If Hillary wins and they try their usual roadblock nonsense, Schumer calmly drops the mic on them using their own words.

Wait, do all 100 senators get to vote? I thought only 66 do. Since the other 34 are in the last year of their term, they can't be trusted to do anything, so it's up to the other 66 (who by the way are 34D, 30R, 2I).

Well life is tough in Scooby's world, where Scott Walker is the President and Hillary is in jail ;)

Exactly. The GOP still hasnt learned that we all hear everything you say. When you speak in front of cameras it isnt just being broadcast in the beltway, the whole world sees it and remembers it. When Hillary wins the Derps are DOA.

Hell the fact that the GOP made this an issue at all was dumb. In a year when the Dems are split over the candidates they made an issue of the one thing that will get people out to vote. No one wants Drumpf or Cruz deciding who replaces Scalia...

To me that's the money shot here. Reagan's Ghost isn't picking the SCOTUS nominee. Saying Trump or Cruz decides the SCOTUS majority really brings it home as to what's at stake, and weds the entire GOP Senate to Trump. Campaign ads are easy: you're delaying the nomination vote because you want to give Trump the opportunity to fill the seat. How does Ayotte/Toomey/Portman/Kirk/Johnson respond to that?

They still hold most of the elected offices in the country. People seem to forget that. And with Hillary at the top of the ticket there's no way of knowing what this electorate will do. Personally I do hope she wins and crushes whoever she runs against. It might set the GOP back to reality. Then again, they just may sweep it under the rug again and play the. "oops, we picked the wrong guy again" card which means we'll go through this whole vicious cycle again. Maybe this time they'll downgrade the legitimacy of the Presidency because it's a woman instead of a black man.

I know so many people that absolutely HATE Hillary. And not for any rational reason. I'm not a huge fan, but I think she'll be a competent president and I don't think she is evil. These people honestly think she should be in jail yet can't name an actual law that she broke.

Re: The Power of SCOTUS VIII redux: IX is being blocked by the Senate.

How do you even discuss what "they" or "GOP" has been or will be thinking? The pitchfork mob does not think or plan; it simply reacts in fear or anger to what its manipulators throw at it. And those who created this mob are beginning to realize they have created something they cannot control or put to positive use.

This was true of Bams too, though. Otherwise reasonable co-workers would literally sputter when his name was mentioned.

This is what happens when Fox and Hate Radio pours into ears day after day for years. It's some combination of Stockholm Syndrome and Jihadi Radicalization. The difference between ODS and HDS is Hillary isn't black but the Echo Chamber has also been brainwashing its captives for 25 years instead of 8.

Those people are never coming back to reality. The good news is with each year a substantial percentage of them cross the River Jordan, and other than a handful of Dugger freakshows the model has been discontinued, so whereas they were 33% during the Clinton Impeachment and 29% during the Dubya Debacle, they're down to about 25% and falling. This is the last general election in which they will factor at all.

Honestly, she's probably the single most qualified person to run in my lifetime. She's not my favorite either, but she isn't going to be a bad president.
