Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

I'm about 80 posts behind so excuse me if I'm being redundant...

OK, get ready to blast me....but I think it's time for a reality check!

Let's throw it out there...are they pretty good? Yep! Are they overrated in the polls right now? Nope! Will they be if they take Saturday night's performance from here on out? Oh, god yea!

When you can have arguably your most sloppy game in months and walk with 2 points....you'll take it. But that performance really worried me. They looked like a team who finally achieved the validation they've been looking for and turned off the extra work and smart play that got them where they are....and struck me as a little complacent....like they were entitled to win that game regardless of effort.

I'll be the jerk to rain on our parade of good joy....the unbeaten streak ends Friday. Haven't been more certain about a Maine game all year. Couple reasons.....BC is a darn good team ready to mow down all in their path, especially on home ice, after blowing the Frozen Fenway game, and our guys (If the 'Mack game is any indication) look like they're taking their new found status for granted already. It looked like the days of old where a one goal lead meant sit back and hang on for dear life....afterall, 'we probably got this one'.

Not only that....I have no inside scoop but that Darling thing looked like a groin tweak. Reminiscent of Big Ben....and we all know how that lingered. He looked so slow and uncomfortable the rest of the game, as Bishop always did. They're going to go ahead and start him....but I'm pretty confident we'll see Sirman or Wilson by the game's end. I think they're going to get their bell rung on Friday....but hopefully it will be a good wake up.

I think pollsters are basing Maine's rank this week on the fact that they won again because if they SAW the game on Saturday....they wouldn't have been so generous. We're still a top 20 team, for sure, don't get me wrong....but the REAL 09/10 team could have really messed up Mack....and certainly shouldn't have let the Warriors set the pace and hold so much possesion during the 2nd half.

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

Regardless of how sloppy the victory was, I'm sure that the 2 points still look pretty good to the pollsters. Merrimack played Maine pretty well. They've yet to win on the road this year (0-9-0) but honestly should have snagged their first win on opposing ice on Saturday. They're still pretty bad, but not quite as bad as we've seen in the past.

I like where Maine sits as a team right now. Defensively we still have our lapses, but they're less frequent than the last couple years. If Darling isn't up to 100% then those lapses could become a problem. Offensively (and especially on the PP) we can hang with most teams. Especially if guys like Dee/Shemansky/Abbott can produce on a game-to-game basis. Being 4 points from catching UNH at the top of Hockey East isn't an unrealistic goal for Maine, especially since Maine gets them twice at home.

Maybe I'VE been drinking too much kool-aid...

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

Layoff the kool aid:D

I doubt Dee plays this weekend and if it s a groin issue, I doubt Darling plays his best. BC will be tough but I won't be shocked if the game goes either way. BC doesn't have a Gerbe or a Gionta like the past.

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

Did Maine play their best game of the year? No, they did not, but they found a way to win the game. Good teams find a way to win, even when they are not playing their best. That to me is an indication that the team is on the right track.

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

I agree that Maine is looking a little too happy out there. This weekend's BC game is a big character test for the team. If they come out and play hard they can definitely win it. BC hasn't been playing very good hockey recently (see 2-5 loss to St. Lawrence) but they are still loaded with talent.

Overall, winnable game, but they have to show up!

Go Maine.

I just turned 21 a couple months ago. Cut me a bit of a break? :p

I'm surprised that there isn't any Coach of the Year talk out of you nutcases. :D

USA Today polls do not seem to be going in the right direction too quickly?????
USA Today Paper is a Basketball/Football/Baseball paper when it comes to there sports section....Hockey,either the NHL or the College game is Light Years away in there rear view mirror......there idea of Hockey is 3 cubes of ice and 2 shots of Crown Royal, then Repeat....then...............

.

they did not do so well mowing down Denver, StLawrence and BU.
Only one of those teams is ranked.
Then on Tuesday, BC beat Providence.... is that the mowing down everyone in their path, that you are referring to?

As i remember, in years when BC was awesome and Maine was not quite so hot, Maine was able to beat BC when BC had short rest (like they played on a Monday and Maine did not.)... This week, BC has only 2 nights off between games and Maine has a lot more.

I am not willing to call the Friday game... It could go either way, and it could be 5-0 either way. No longer does Petrecki guarantee Maine 4 easy power play opportunities. But BC also does not have a defenseman/sniper who can bury ALL rebounds from the top of the circles, either.

PC will be playing their 3rd game in 5 days on Saturday.

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

The schedule angle is interesting, but I think a lot of it comes down to Darling. He can give Maine a chance to steal some road points. He could also take Maine out of those games if he isn't really ready to go.

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

Additional angle on Friday night's contest: BC students do not return to campus from semester break until Tuesday, January 19th.

Two effects:
1. less of a student section at the game...different crowd dynamics
2. no student interaction with team...perhaps more focused players on ice

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

chitty news. Darling out at least 2 weeks and Dee for 3 maybe more. tough break for sure. Glad to have those exhibitions next week. Hopefully Scotty can get healed for the trip to Vermont. Dee was really coming on. He is a key and hopefully can get healthy for the final few weeks.

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

Not shocked about either being out for a few weeks, pretty much knew that was coming Saturday night. Dee has "slight" fracture in his foot, Darling 'left leg" injury

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

Tough NEWS tonight on Darling & Dee....to say this TEAM will be tested is a understatement....Darling's loss will be very hard to replace, while Dee's injury will be a lost but less then in net......they'll have to hunker down and protect either Sirman/Wilson.....

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

Screw "hunkering down"

I've had enough of TIMMAY's "we need to protect our goaltenders" strategy for a lifetime. Just go out and play your game.

Wetnursing a goalie because you don't have any confidence in them accomplishes exactly two things. You're so concentrated on protecting him that you stop playing the way you did that's been winning you games,. and two, it shows the goaltender that you have no confidence in him.

How'd you like to be a goalie going into a game knowing your coach and your teammates think you suck?

Re: The Official Maine 2009 season thread:The Revenge of TIMMAY!!!

I don't know about anyone else on here but I have no confidence in Wilson getting it done on the road. I would start Sirman to see if he can win a road game.

I went to practice today. Darling not present. Wilson, Sirman and Seeley getting in a good workout. Maine's defense will have to step up and offer the new goal tender some extra support if Darling doesn't play. It's not like Wilson hasn't had some good games in the past. College hockey, one never knows what might happen even when a key player isn't able to play.;)

P.S. I watched the women's team, too. :)

By Hunkering Down I meant they will have play a tight error free game in there d-end.....no matter how you look at it...things will change without there #1 guy in the crease.....and if the Backups think it's a slap in the face that the team is working harder in there end then they shouldn't be out there.....with injurys you have to play the game..but at times tweak it to your strenghts. I also hear what you mean about the "Timmy" approach..........I'm on board for UMaine HKy.
