I will be there if Tech is there. And if we're talking beers, don't forget HopCat. My impression is that the immediate area around Van Andel Arena has become kinda trendy.

Seven points now separate 3rd (Tech) from 9th (Northern). I thought that UAH was going to pick LSSU off there for a while.

I was totally hoping that 2-1 lead was going to hold. I would have sent you a certain picture of a kid with a blue cupcake.

La la lala-la-la la lala-la la..... :)

Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

The model has a five-way tie at 28 points.

What the heck.

I'll write on it later this week and figure out the tie-breakers. Alaska will get third with 13 conference wins, and Tech-Anchorage-BG-Bemidji, all picked to go 12-12-4, will have to be broken up by the third tiebreaker, as I know already from last week's run that the second tiebreaker is fixed. If you want to figure it out, it's W% down the standings, Ferris-Mankato-Fairbanks, etc.

Studying statistical quality control makes my head hurt less than this does.

I might be there and I vote for Hopcat if I can get away. We don't want anyone to have an accident at the Bob.

I'll be there with the family. Any beer places that are family friendly? We've never been to Grand Rapids.

We've been talking about it here, but not sure yet....

I'll probably go even if Northern isn't there. Last time I went to a hockey game at all was the Grand Rapids regional in 2009, when Bemidji State stunned everyone.

Pregame, if you want "family friendly," TGI Friday's or Founders are your best bets. After the game, I am all for going to Hopcat.

As for parking, it's plentiful around the arena. I generally park in the Louis Campau ramp. Event rates are $6.

Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

FYI, I thought I heard that Founders' is releasing (or will have released) their Kentucky Breakfast Stout that weekend. That is a MUST HAVE beer. For the record, I got my purchase limit at the only store I could get it (tried 4-5 stores), which was ONE 12oz bottle at a cost of $5.

The bell is ready to ring............. Who is going to be standing............and who will be out................

I would think that if you are a Northern fan this ice starting to melt. BG keeps slipping, and Ferris and MSU have the gas throttle maxed.

I have my tickets to Grand Rapids in March and am looking forward to the weekend!

Oh, the Grand Rapids Fishing and Hunting show is also going on at the same time and its a big show downtown next to the ice rink. Its a great downtown area.

How did BG slip? They only had an exhibition in which the lineup was far from regular.

WCHA tie breaker

In regular-season competition, each Western Collegiate Hockey Association team shall accumulate points from each WCHA contest (i.e., a contest between teams representing two WCHA member institutions played as part of the conference schedule), receiving two points for each game won in regulation time or overtime, and one point for each game tied at the conclusion of overtime. The team accumulating the greatest number of points in regular-season WCHA contests shall be the WCHA Champion. If two or more teams are tied for the Championship, they shall be considered co-champions.

So if MSU and FSU tie with points....no matter what they did against each other or if one team has more wins than the other, they will declared
co champs....is that correct>>>>>>

correct, co-champion, both honored with the mcnaughton. Tiebreakers will be used to determine seeding of the co-champions.

It seems like there will be a lot of fun things to do at the final five, not just watch games. and downtown GR is a very nice place to visit. It's at least as nice as St Paul is.
It ought to be an awesome set of games. I really hope it makes the league some good money.

It looks to me like Lake State is the man on the bubble. Even if they get a split vs Mankato, they need another point, as they lose most of the tie breakers vs other possible teams at 26 points.. NMU needs a split vs bgsu. It's possible we get three in if, Mankato wins out and a third team wins the final 5. Plus Providence needs to lose a few.

Maybe the WCHA would be ahead to have a booth at the show.

Correct, and in that situation, the MacNaughton Cup will be taken out of the trunk of Grant Potulny's car and presented to Minnesota.

I concur. It's fantastic.

Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

Okay, as best as I can guess how the tiebreakers are applied based on the information that the league put out:

1. No head-to-head comparisons can be used because the teams involved didn't all play each other four times.
2. Conference wins puts Alaska in 3rd.
3. The team-by-team tiebreakers are on W% down the table. As such, I looked at the schedule for each of the four teams, and:
a) Everyone got 25% of their points against Ferris save Anchorage, who gets 7th as a result.
b) Of the three remaining schools, BG has the highest W% against Mankato (.500) and gets 4th.
c) Between Bemidji (.250) and Tech (.000), the Beavers have the higher ranking against the Mavs, but this is based on the premise that the Huskies don't pick up any points in Mankato. If the Huskies pick up any points in Mankato, they'd have at least home ice and would be 3/4 with the Nanooks.[sub]1[/sub] But for the purpose of evaluating the predictive model as show, BSU would get 5th and MTU 6th.

Is that enough fun for you? Just wait until next weekend!

GFM

[1] That one is interesting, because if the Huskies pick up a tie in Mankato, they don't have more conference wins, but if they get more, the comparison gets dicey. They do get a HTH pairing, but they're .500; they'd have the same number of conference wins; it comes down to W% against the Bulldogs, which has the Huskies at .500 while the Nanooks are predicted to be just .250. If Alaska sweeps Ferris, we're not having this conversation unless Tech also sweeps Mankato, and then Huskies get third with the Nanooks in fourth. Phew.

Strike the above because I can't count (but am leaving it in because I want people to see that I recognized my error). If Tech picks up points in Mankato, Alaska would need to pick up three or four to keep pace; changing the results the next week avoids the 12-12-4 pileup.

P.S. Here is the entire text from the WCHA Manual:

WCHA Tie-Breaking Procedures

For Playoff Seeding Only

In regular-season competition, each Western Collegiate Hockey Association team shall accumulate points from each WCHA contest (i.e., a contest between teams representing two WCHA member institutions played as part of the conference schedule), receiving two points for each game won in regulation time or overtime, and one point for each game tied at the conclusion of overtime. The team accumulating the greatest number of points in regular-season WCHA contests shall be the WCHA Champion. If two or more teams are tied for the Championship, they shall be consid- ered co-champions.

Seeding for the WCHA Tournament

If two or more teams have accumulated the same number of points shall be determined according to the following procedure:

A) If two or more teams are tied, and all teams tied have played four contests against one another, then the team with the most accumulated points from these head to head contests will be granted the higher seed.

B) If two or more teams are still tied (or all teams tied have not played four contests against one another) the highest seed will go to the team with the greater number of conference wins.

C) If not determined by A) or B) above, the recipient of the highest seed shall be determined by comparison of the winning percentages of the teams tied, against the remaining highest ranked WCHA team successively, until the determination is accomplished, or all WCHA contests have been considered.

In the event of multiple ties within the standings that become depen- dent on one another for determination, the procedure shall be applied to the highest tie first, using combined winning percentage against all teams involved in the lower tie(s) and continuing through the order if needed. If this fails to break the highest tie, the procedure shall be applied to the next highest tie (and so on if needed), using combined winning percentage against all tied teams as needed when proceeding through the standings.

D) If not determined by A), or B), or C), the recipient of the higher seed will be determined by “winning margin” during conference contests.

“Winning margin” = WCHA conference goals for minus WCHA conference goals against.

In the event of multiple ties within the standings that reach this step, the procedure shall be applied first to the highest tie in the standings. If this fails to break the highest tie, the procedure shall be applied to the next highest tie (and so on if needed) until any tie is broken and all procedures are re-started.

E) If not determined by A), or B), or C), or D), the recipient of the higher seed shall be determined by the flip of a coin.

In the event of multiple ties within the standings that reach this step, the procedure shall be applied first to the highest tie in the standings after which all procedures are re-started.

In the case of ties among three or more schools, the criteria will be used in order until a team, or teams, is separated from the top of the pack. At that point, the process will begin anew to break the “new” tie. In other words, when a three-way tie becomes a two-way tie, the two-way tie is treated as a “new” tie and the process begins with the first criterion.

So in a nutshell................. just sit back and wait............win your in.........lose and, good luck.

Ferris needs to sweep up in Nanook land, because MSU looks like they are not going to lose.
