How many time do I have to explain to you that you are allowed to play non-conference games against conference opponents? The weak-arsed schools in the league who's coaches are either too lazy or too incompetent to find opponents to fill their schedules outside of conference play have an easy out. NMU can't find non-conference opponents? Schedule the Michigan teams from the league as you like. The Michigan teams could get together and have a tournament ... call it the Governors Cup or hold it in Detroit and call it the Craphole Cup. Or play some AHA teams ... many of those are reasonably close to Michigan. Last time I looked there are 12 teams in Atlantic Hockey.

As for other objections about 5 home or away series and 4 home or away series ... that much lesser imbalance is rectified on a year by year basis. And it's offset by the extra league games WCHA teams get from the Alaska Exemption. OH NOES!1!1!! ... that's two more home games you have to schedule!!11!!!

Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

Non-conference; Bemidji has been pretty lucky. We've been treated pretty well by the teams in the NCHC and Big Ten.

And that was my point, which maybe I didn't make very clearly. We have traditional/geographic foes, who have treated us pretty well, and who our fans have some interest in seeing, and it's worth it to play at their place, even if we don't get the 1 for 1. I just don't see any value for us in playing HE teams if they won't come out here also.

Right now, Michigan State and Duluth are the only two I can think of that would offer that....and have. I'm sure you can get it from Penn State...if you want it.

Penn State will do a come to Penn State for cash or multiple for 1. Are you sure State is an even swap? Duluth and St Cloud will if they have room after non con games with Mankato, Bemidji and Minnesota. Now ask North Dakota, Miami, Minnesota and Wisconsin. See if there are enough of those schools are offering even swaps.

Gee, never thought of the non league vs league opponent thing, especially since we have one such series next year. Thanks. Playing a Governors Cup in Detroit doesn't exactly put butts in our rink. But we will play in the GLI in the 15-16 season with 3 other Michigan schools. Oh, by the way, just how many people are you going to fill the Joe with for Ferris, NMU, Lake State and Bowling Green and how many will travel to see you play the team you played 2 weeks ago and one you have next month. Maybe it might even top the 2200 you get in your barn! Now who are these coaches that are "too lazy" to find opponents? I've talked to every coach in the league and every one is finding the same challenges. Every one. And none of them are lazy by any stretch of the imagination. It's not getting getting games that is difficult. It's getting home games. I really enjoyed the real name comment Mr Fanblog. You have a wonderful wit. From my experience, UAA fans are friendly, welcoming and incredibly gracious. Try it sometime.

I guess UAA and UA_ are simply more committed to hockey financially than some of the other WCHA schools. Want someone to come to your barn to play? Pay for their travel. If that's too expensive then maybe your school should consider giving up hockey at the D1 level.

You're right. You're better than everybody. The rest of us are not worthy.

You should just start your own 2 team league. You could play each other 16, 20 or 28 times, and stay home the rest of the year. Everybody would be lined up for the opportunity to visit you...what with you paying for the travel and that wonderful exemption.

This scares me for the future of the WCHA.

Maybe they should consider giving up travel to the state of Alaska. It seems like a much more logical decision than giving up hockey alltogether. Mercyhurst and Robert Morris are much more reasonable to travel to.

Always attack, always argue ad hominem, always change the subject. It's all you've got.

Isn't Michigan playing at MTU next season?
Yes but I believe the deal is a 2 for 1 where MTU is @ Michigan this year and 2015-16 and actually, I'm pretty sure Michigan State is a 2 for 1, just that the games at MTU were in Year 1 of the deal.

More non-conference games are a terrible idea. Why would you want to play more games that mean less? Fans don't want to watch, and players don't want to play games for decimal points on some computer.

What the WCHA needs is to continue to play a 28 game schedule to build rivalries.

Re: The New WCHA IV (2013-14): Unlocked and Cocked

I really wish teams posting highlights would post both team's goals. I want to see the goals scored by both teams in a hightlight reel, just showing one side is stupid. Tech is doing both now which is good. BGSU only showed their own. Why do I care? Tech uses the home team feed from A1 it looks like, which doesn't look as good as the home team HD video.

Show us both!

Absolutely. One need only look at the number of series that occur in the WCHA without a series thread on this board to see that there is a lack of familiarity which creates a lack of interest. I think this year's close standings will accelerate the process. There's going to be essentially a month long playoff this year. Teams will have a reason to keep an eye on other matchups each week. Half of the "home" teams may well lose just because of how close the conference is top to bottom.

Who are we going to offer? Do you think Michigan is coming to Marquette an extra time for money? No. They'll come once in exchange for other teams making 2 or 3 trips to Ann Arbor. Im sure Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin are lighting up Matt's phone wanting to know the best places to eat for their next trip to Anchorage. Tell them Glacier Bay, Moose's Tooth and Snow City are all good options.
