Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

Well, with new media taking over, the "New" WCHA has a chance to be one of the more new media savvy entities out there. With the internet being the only medium for this product, I think they should go big. Live Gamecast that actually works and updates and even a free game every weekend to build your product.

I agree with this, an aggressive and modern marketing approach will be needed. That said, Bruce McLeod probably would not agree. After the dust cleared last summer, if I had the power, I would've told him to start thinking about retirement. It would've been the perfect time to establish new leadership for the new WCHA.

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

I would agree, the desirability is not big now. Even for the big ten. At the same time, it's not smart to be left without some sort of aggressive marketing strategy.
So here's a question, lets say that there is a game between one established league that has a tv deal and another league that either does or does not have a tv deal elsewhere.. In other words if a WCHA, and I reject the new label, it's not new imho, anyway if say Bowling Green is playing Notre Dame, I would assume that a network might have an interest. Maybe Notre Dame is a bad example but The question is how would this be handled from a revenue perspective and is the WCHA out there working to market/ license the product.
I think the product is definitely marketable, but I'd like to hear from someone who knows if they are working on it.

You act like they're interested now when a B1G team isn't playing. ;)

Whether they're interested or not right now I couldn't tell you for sure. But, I think NMU8405 poses a good alternative for the future. Hopefully, the "New" WCHA will be progressive in the area of live, high-quality, internet broadcasts.

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

Manurespreader: Those non-conference games would only be televised if the host school with TV coverage was guaranteed a win. NMU's president talked to a couple producers from BigTen Network a few years back. Their comment: "We HATE airing you guys because you always beat the 'big name' school we're promoting."

F2B&G: The CCHA is MILES ahead of where they have ever been in utilizing social media to promote their brand. Makes me wish that the WCHA hires them to continue. All it took was Anastos leaving and " *OhMyGOD!* There are NINE OTHER schools in this conference?!? Who knew?"

Their Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube work this season has been amazing.

As for a regional TV coverage... UA_ and UAA are on their own whatever Alaskan cable system they have is. MQT, Houghton, Soo St Marie are Charter with no shared "local access" channel. Big Rapids is either Comcast or Charter. BGSU is Buckee cable? And I assume Mankato is Comcast while Bemidji is Charter?

None are large enough to have an RSN pick up a package. All the metro areas that offer it are no where near the new WCHA schools.

I may have to brainstorm a bit on that.

well I know the WCHA was/is working on the WCHA network which I assume was a feed that cable companies could pick up, all the production work was done by the host school I believe. I would think that a local/ rural cable company can air the program late night at very little cost.

I would think that all the leagues now are going to be looking for some non conference games, I just wonder how the financial's work because I am not ok with padding the pockets of HE, b1g or anyone else. IMHO the biggest draw from a network perspective will be Bowling Green for instance last weekends BG vs OSU game.

GCI, but coverage is nothing to write home about. All they do is pick up the Internet feed and Cech (UAF) or Haider's (UAA) radio broadcast and broadcast it on the equivalent of a public access channel. So basically you're watching the Internet feed on your tv, and you can't get it if you don't have GCI. Better than nothing, but not by much.

The Fox affiliate in Fairbanks (KFXF) does pick up a CCHA game of the
week...if UAF is on the road they'll pick up our game from the home team's feed, and if we are at home they'll pick up a "marquee" matchup (usually whatever FSD airs). No local stations in Anchorage carry college hockey anymore.

They should hire some computer nerd, a communications person, and a marketing person to work as a multi-functional project team and do exactly what you have been talking about the last several posts.

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

I'm willing to telecommute (and drive to an office once in a while) to work for them to do these things. Where do I submit my resume, cover letter, and salary requirements?

And make it free. There isn't some cash cow waiting to be milked where schools can recover expenditures. Give the webstreams away for FREE and raise the level of exposure for the new league.

Sure, and the fans will volunteer to staff the broadcasts so there are no costs for it! DropThePuck doing PBP from Anchorage, Shirtless doing it from Houton, etc.. It'll be great! :D

Yeah cos that's what I said. I'm fairly certain that the majority of WCHA teams that are staying already have TV production. In some cases (UAA and Mankato ...) it's an exercise in education and experience for A/V students.

Like I said ... there is no significant money to be made by any of the future WCHA teams via TV (contracts or web) so they might as well get the biggest benefit out of their ALREADY EXISTING productions and give them away to increase the visibility of the conference.

Now **** off back to whatever BIG10 thread you left. You know .. the conference whose student bodies don't have a clue that their school plays hockey. The one where women's basketball outdraws men's hockey. You know ... the conference that thinks it's a professional sports league. Yeah .. that one. The one your team joined.

Yeah they can hire me, since that is what I went to school for...My schedule is open for any interviews.

I may be horrible on air (see Cat Chat for proof) but Im pretty good at producing, content, and stats. Oh I love some juicy hockey stats.

It may be a good idea for you and some counterparts from other schools to reach out to the AD's at the WCHA schools. Put together an outline of what you think would be feasible, compose a well thought out proposal, and send it out to the AD's. If you have a group the represents several, if not most of the schools, I think you would get some attention from at least a couple AD's, especially if you engage people that may already have the ear of their school's AD.

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

Put it on a Roku channel.

That is a fantastic idea. The WCHA Roku channel could have live games (either as a pay per view or buy the season or whatever), plus have press conference video and anything else the schools want to put on there just as if they were putting it on YouTube. From what I understand, it's pretty easy to do (especially since there is son much the schools are putting online already) - and would provide a place to watch a ton of games.
