The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Its in there...kinda.

Gurt,

The purpose of the Joker was not to be the main villain...he was just the little bit of chaos showing up randomly to mess things up. I remember reading Nolan and Goyer saying they were writing him in a non linear fashion for that reason. The movie is supposed to be the Rise and Fall of Harvey Dent. I think that would have changed had they known Heath wouldnt be around. It seems obvious they would have written the third part with Joker in Arkham. If Heath dies during filming my guess is Two-Face lives and destroys Gotham. (not years later)

Never heard their comments.

I've wondered if they were planning to use Joker in the third movie more prominently.

Again though, who cares about Harvey Dent? I'd never heard of him before the movie and I'm hardly completely clueless where it comes to Batman. I didn't find him to be a compelling villain in the movie and was mostly waiting for better/more interesting things to happen while he was on screen.

Just my opinion. Clearly with the ratings that it gets, I'm in the minority.

I didn't hate the movie... I actually liked it. It's just flawed imo. One of those where I walk away thinking, "almost."

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Harvey Dent is a central character in the Batman universe. Hell, he was even included in the Burton films.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Yep he was played by Lando Calrissian in the first film and Tommy Lee Jones in Forever.

Considering that battle is Thorin's demise I'd hardly call it "kinda". The reason it's not in the "book" is because it wasn't central to Bilbo's character the way Tolkien wrote it. This movie has never just been about the book.

Damm it, now I digressed.

I was just going to ask how Hurt could have forgotten about Tommy Lee Jones's portrayal of Harvey Dent.

But I guess he was blocking out the Val Kilmer version of Batman.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Hmmm, that battle was central to the end of the Hobbit.

I appear to be the lone person enjoying the movies so I won't bother to digress further.

I'm enjoying them, but in the way that one enjoys most action movies - thought-free, forgettable entertainment.

I don't remember him specifically although I now recall Tommy Lee Jones being in that movie. Trying to forget most of the Batman movies up until the most recent trilogy I guess.

Used to watch the Batman series on Cartoon Network with my kid every day and also Batman Begins (which I loved till they got the school friend involved). Don't remember Dent from those either although he'd have most likely been dead by the Batman Begins timeframe.

Regardless, they could have made up a villain out of thin air and had it been a compelling character and a compelling portrayal, it would have worked for me. Dent didn't.

Yeah, I don't love thought free action movies in the first place and to have that done to my favorite fictional universe (as much as fictional universes matter to me) is very tough to take - especially after they got the first trilogy so right.

For me, action movies have to also have some heart or some peril or some comedy or great character development. The Hobbit (movies) come up short in all of those areas. Only thing they nailed is the over the top stupid action sequences.

Couple that with me being a bit close to the material and I am a very dissatisfied customer.

Even if I wasn't into Tolkien's writings, I wouldn't like these movies as like I said, I don't like action for action's sake movies.

The movies may be flawed but it's going to be bad *** to see the Battle of Five Armies onscreen.

Yes, and that's why I'll go.

Looking forward to Smaug in Laketown too.

Unfortunately - that's likely to be all I take from this movie.

With the first movie, I found it less offensive after viewing the extended edition. Some of the character and heart that I thought was missing was in the EE. Still wasn't quite right, but I went into the second movie more optimistic.

I will buy the EE when it comes out in November and even though the ultra stupid dwarf hunt-Thorin on Smaug's nose-golden statue will still be in there (just like the singing Great Goblin and Indiana Jones under the mountains were in the first EE), maybe I'll find a smidge of what I was missing.

No matter, like I said, I'll see it through... however grudgingly.

Jesus Kepler, I love ya and I agree the villain in Skyfall was terrible, but it otherwise was a terrific movie. B at worst.

I do agree though that The Departed was horsecrap.

Brent - Fight Club is as overrated as Usual Suspects, yeah I said it.

Ooo, that last sentence... them's fightin' words.

Usual Suspects is probably overrated, although I certainly enjoy it.

But Fight Club is brilliant. Palahniuk is an insufferable *****, but that's his one great book and the movie was a perfect treatment of it.

Skyfall was crap because of the Bond/M storyline. That was lowest common denominator slush and it ruined the movie -- The After School Special Bond; Lifetime Presents: The Burning Demense; Not Without My Walther. It you remove every reference to that, it's probably a B.

More Joker - no Dent. What a waste of a great villain.

That would have made a great TDK. Well, as much as a great movie can be made where the hero is a neofascist, anyway.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

I don't see much difference between most Bond villains. The formula is always, "I'm an EEEEEVIL dude who wants to wreak havoc and/or get rich! He-He-He! But not before I monologue enough to give Bond the chance to escape! He-He-He!" In other words, Dark Helmet playing with his dolls again.

Mike Myers captured it perfectly.

Dr. Evil: Scott, I want you to meet daddy's nemesis, Austin Powers
Scott Evil: What? Are you feeding him? Why don't you just kill him?
Dr. Evil: I have an even better idea. I'm going to place him in an easily escapable situation involving an overly elaborate and exotic death.

Dr. Evil: Okay no problem. Here's my second plan. Back in the 60's, I had a weather changing machine that was, in essence, a sophisticated heat beam which we called a "laser." Using these "lasers," we punch a hole in the protective layer around the Earth, which we scientists call the "Ozone Layer." Slowly but surely, ultraviolet rays would pour in, increasing the risk of skin cancer. That is unless the world pays us a hefty ransom.
Number Two: [pause] That also already has happened.
[in original pressings, Number Two said "That also has already been done."]
Dr. Evil: ****. Oh hell, let's just do what we always do. Hijack some nuclear weapons and hold the world hostage. Yeah? Good! Gentlemen, it has come to my attention that a breakaway Russian Republic called Kreplachistan will be transferring a nuclear warhead to the United Nations in a few days. Here's the plan. We get the warhead and we hold the world ransom for... ONE MILLION DOLLARS!
Number Two: Don't you think we should ask for *more* than a million dollars? A million dollars isn't exactly a lot of money these days. Virtucon alone makes over 9 billion dollars a year!
Dr. Evil: Really? That's a lot of money. [pause] Okay then, we hold the world ransom for... One... Hundred... BILLION DOLLARS!

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Austin Powers completely nailed the ridiculousness of Bond Movies...especially the Drecky Roger Moore ones which made no sense.

And Fight Club was just yawn worthy. When that movie ended I applauded because it was worse than Japanese Water Torture...the only thing more overrated was the cruddy Coen Brothers remake of True Grit. When I cant sleep I think of that movie and I am out in 10 minutes.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

True Grit really sucked.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

The only good thing about the remake of True Grit is it reminded a lot of people to go watch the original.

God bless you, Kim Darby. I know you did nothing else with your life, but for that alone the pearly gates wait wide for you.

Kepler reminds me of film majors, you know the ones who find hidden meaning in everything but hate any movie that more than 12 people can agree is good. He is that guy who sits there and pontificates about a movie in 12 paragraphs but ultimately is just saying what the average hipster says over a PBR while waxing his handlebar mustache. The Hipster is better though because he doesnt have to remind us he went to Cornell by using words with 7 syllables and references almost as dated as Old Pio.

People who overuse sesquipedalian words should realize that if they want to facilitate effective communication, they need to eschew obfuscation. Furthermore, flaunting their erudition is likely to induce resentment in the reader, which also will interfere with receptivity to the message.

There are times when defenestration seems to be appropriate! ;)
