The Most Serious [x] Problem We Face Today

Re: The Most Serious [x] Problem We Face Today

Ya know what would make me extremely happy? Mandatory life sentences for people convicted of an illegal drug crime while on welfare/foodstamps/unemployment.

Thus increasing their cost to the taxpayer...

How about mandatory life sentences for white collar crime? Those people don't have to worry about feeding their kids, so if they steal there must be something pathologically wrong with them.

I'll vote for that. Start with all the bankers circa 2008-09.

I don't commit that crime either, so I have no problem with it.

Re: The Most Serious [x] Problem We Face Today

Here's the thing there BB. let's take michigan as an example. We incarcerate roughly double the prisoners as a percentage of population than does an y of the neighboring states. Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and minnesota. Yet our crime rate has not been affected at all and we spend a ton of money keeping all the prisoners in jail. We have a lot of tough on crime laws because politicos seem to think it gets votes. I was on a jury last year where the guy did 12 years mandatory minimum for weapons possession in the commission of a felony. his felony..., weapons possession.

So it's hard to conclude from that that increasing incarceration times will affect crime rates.

Too bad we don't have the equivalent of an 18th century Australia.

I'd thought you'd go for the Moon first. Cheaper transportation costs (sort of like America was before we separated from the Mother Country).

Too close, and I don't want to look at them every night.

Re: The Most Serious [x] Problem We Face Today

I don't think the people that are on welfare while wasting money on drugs want to be free of government, it is the exact opposite.
We're talking about white color criminals.

You know, the people who did it all themselves. It should be a snap for them to terraform a world. They're so impressive.

Re: The Most Serious [x] Problem We Face Today

So put them on the farside, you'll never see them.
Saving it for the Fundies. If they really believe in God they should be able to live without an atmosphere. They do believe in God, don't they?

Yes, but they also know He made the air (and the moon). God does not believe in the right of suicide.

So we dig below the surface, put in some strong domes, get the air out of the rocks (at least some theories say there is air / water in the rocks), and hire SpaceX to transport them. What's wrong with that? :)

Now we have a more serious problem -- Joe can't get home
Amtrak Northeast ‏@AmtrakNEC
Service BAL (Baltimore, MD) to WIL (Wilmington, DE) disrupted due to overhead wire problems. Repairs underway. Thank you for your patience.

To quote Jesus when the devil tempted him to throw himself off the temple and have angels catch him, "You shall not put the Lord your God to the test" (Luke 4:12)

Raising taxes the Texas way...

Texas Judge Preparing For ‘Civil War’ If Obama Re-Elected

LUBBOCK (CBSDFW.COM) - A Texas leader is warning of what he calls a ‘civil war’ and possible invasion of United Nations troops if President Barack Obama is re-elected.

Lubbock County Judge Tom Head is convinced that Mr. Obama winning a second term would lead to a revolt by the American people and he’s is pushing a tax increase for the district attorney’s office and the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office. He says the money is needed to “beef up” it’s resources in case President Obama wins the November election.

In the event of civil unrest Judge Head said he’s concerned the President would hand over sovereignty of the United States to the U.N. and that the American public would react violently.

“He’s going to try to hand over the sovereignty of the U.S. to the United Nations, what’s going to happen when that happens?” Judge Head told FOX 34 in Lubbock.

“I’m thinking worse case scenario,” Judge Head explained. “Civil unrest, civil disobedience, civil war maybe…we’re not just talking a few riots or demonstrations.”

The West Texas judge’s proposed tax increase is to help the sheriff’s office hire a law enforcement large enough to protect the county and to drive away the invaders.

In a weird way, one of the most serious problems we face today is incompetence. There are certain things abougt a meritocracy to recommend it, after all.

Sometimes its not as simple as that. Who determines performance? Likewise, there needs to be equal opportunity by making sure everyone has the tools to succeed. Otherwise meritocracy is really just mediocrity which results not as a matter of talent...but rather as a matter of who gets a head start and later, has access to resources.

There are many forms of meritocracy which would have not included a theory of relativity.

Good point. The mediocre (or even subpar) inheritors of great wealth achieve on "merit" simply because they stand on the shoulders of giant bank accounts. Whether it be Bush or Kennedy (or Romney) sons, a lot of Nothings manage to be born on third, be gifted home plate as a graduation present, and think they hit a homerun.

Yeah. And? What's your alternative? A 100% inheritance tax? If Successful Daddy chooses to invest in his idiot kids' future, that's his mistake to make.
