The Medical Thread: We're experts on everything else; why not?

My oldest friend (61, M) was just diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He felt shortness of breath so he went to the doctor (amazingly, I probably would not have; always go to the doctor!) and his hemoglobin count was so low she wondered how he was walking around. His sister got a double full mastectomy last year so there's family history of cancer.

He's getting weekly treatments. It's early days but so far they're not making him sick. He's in good spirits but he's like that.

Our lives are incandescent filaments. Please take care of yourselves, for you and your loved ones.

F Cancer. Glad he is feeling well. FIL les has A.L.L. His hgb was so low they wondered how he was conscious. It is amazing what the body can withstand

Felt some pain in my right knee last week, got into ortho, and got the result today. Primary osteoarthritis.
Ain't the golden years grand.

Now that I have officially retired, I have an appointment with a lawyer on Thursday after PT(yup, still doing that twice a week)in regards to former employer paying disability.

Woof! Norovirus is running its way through my house. My daughter, 5, got it from her second cousins during a birthday party this past Saturday, and late Sunday night she started down the path. Now my wife is going through it, and I’ve not been feeling in tiptop shape, perhaps a few hours behind my wife in symptoms. Two parents down with a daughter who’s recovered and ready to rejoin the world. I feel bad for her.

Somehow, I’ve never experienced it, but genetic testing showed an unlikelihood of being affected by norovirus so maybe it’s true? It spread like wildfire last year Xmas in my family and I felt bad I was the only person not affected

https://biology.indiana.edu/news-ev...susceptibility has an interesting consequence.

It looks like blood types and the “…presence of one oligosaccharide, called the H1-antigen, is required for attachment by many norovirus strains.”

My wife, daughter and I are all O-, so the H1 Thing (the truly technical term for it) is likely present in us.

I thought I head that something like 30% of people don't get it as bad? Maybe I misheard but St Clown's post might back that up.

As an epidemiology nerd, I have a pretty curated list of docs I follow on Bluesky

the 13 year old Canadian girl with avian flu had a disturbingly fast shift in 24 hours to respiratory and renal failure

Oh interesting. It varies by which strain it is. So each one will have a different group that's more resistant. Or so it seems.

Holy hell. She showed symptoms Nov 2, hospitalized Nov 8, and just now got off oxygen.
