No response in 24 hours. We didn’t mean to shut down the thread. Sorry, about that. It was just a bit too obvious to the few that read this blog and are not involved in the group. The Laker coach seems safe so there are plenty of good things to talk about regarding laker hockey. At coffee this morning one of the boys said he heard Gysbers and Kaunisto already signed contracts and left the Soo to play professionally. Supposedly others are soon to follow. Is this true Bill? If so, that’s good news to talk about. The renovation chatter has already died down and could use a boost. Talk out of the Blue Liners is that JR is the individual responsible for this donation coming to LSSU. That’s great news that all of you could inform us about. One request for Bill, when talking with the Laker coaches after the renovation is complete, suggest they don’t bring recruits in to see it during the spring. We don’t want to lose anyone in one of our famous SSM potholes around campus this time of year. It’s only March and they could swallow a building.

Wow! Go JR then. guess that makes my previous post meaningless.
On another topic, I was wondering what the chances were that JR would bring in both Ravn and Kalpalka on scholarship next year, then bring in Marble as the walk on the next year. At some point he said that Edmudson had "significant" scholarship money this year, so he would have $$$ from both senior goalies to pass on to two freshmen. Just a thought.

I had heard about Gysbers but this is the first I've heard of Kaunisto signing...I'd be glad to hear that was true, Kaunisto is known around campus as far and away the most down-to-earth player on the team and a super nice guy so he deserves everything good that comes his way. A few friends and I figured that among the upperclassmen (juniors and seniors) on the team Gysbers, Schofield and Macvoy all would no doubt get a decent shot to show what they've got in the minors at some point, with Acton and BMW as possibilities due to a combination of their talent and connections in pro hockey and that Kaunisto had a decent shot to get a look but was by no means the lock that guys like Schofield were.

It looks like Steven Kaunisto signed a standard player contract with the Reading Royals of the ECHL. This is the AA team of the Leafs. Good luck to him and Simon Gysbers.I had heard about Gysbers but this is the first I've heard of Kaunisto signing..

I thought everyone was gone after the season! Nice to see this offseason thread;
On the renovation front we are interviewing 3-4 architect /engineering / general contracting firms in April. We will be requesting their proposals in June. While we have a preference for a design build firm, we have several quality firms to talk with. There is a singular focus on providing the best building possible for the Lakers. Hopefully, the final product will expand on the themes developed on the web site. This building MUST be a part of providing the Lakers with a recruiting edge....it will be one of the top 2-3 team resource areas in the CCHA (even after ND does their project). It will be a place where a player will get stronger, and better, and have an opportunity to play beyond college. A place they will return for "Pro Week" training prior to returning to their professional teams camp. It cannot be done the way it used to be...but it will be done; with the spirit of those Laker championship teams, those players, honored in the rafters and in the rooms legacy of the number. But it will be done; it will be their time, their turn to shine, ALWAYS within NCAA rules, ALWAYS with hard work and determination, in a way that will make the Lakers a premier choice for a young player with the character to be a Laker. You say LSSU cannot get "The best players", We say we will be in a position to get those who we want.....everything we do will echo the quality approach for excellence the web site illustrates as step one along the path.
There will be no huge revelations or inside info on the project, but perhaps a touch of an inside look at the process. Big news will be on the web site and jointly released by LSSU. The web site and "Launch" was the result of 3 long years of work from the donor group & LSSU personnel. This is not a sprint, but a long hard road ahead.........It is a long road back to the level of year in & out competitiveness we all want to see the Lakers achieve.
Resources for the program are key, but there will be plenty of opportunities for folks to help in small ways, but the main thing is EVERYONE needs to pull on the same rope......put aside your differences and do what you can for the Lakers. Go to a game, if you go to some games, try to swing a season Ticket, at least a partial, join the Laker Club, buy a brick, join the BlueLiners, golf at an outing, listen to the games, or watch on B2, or simply talk it up.......if you own a business buy an ad, or dasher board, or get a group together for a game, be a part of it. There is NOTHING better than the road back.......lots of small steps to enjoy along the way. The best part is the journey......... But along the way "Don't take any (stuff) from anyone!"

Also when you update your plates get the Laker plates, any extra money goes to the University. I have them on both my car and jeep.

Alabama-Huntsville going to the NCAA tournament. What a great thing for them after being rejected for membership in the CCHA. MI State is probably out of the tournament with their losses to MI. MI probably still needs to win down at the Joe to keep their tournament streak alive. Ferris and Miami look like the only sure bet right now to go to the nationals and Northern is still riding the bublle to get in.

3 dogger....I certainly appreciate your enthusiasm concerning the Laker program. You will, however, fogive me for not sharing in it. Fourteen years of heartbreak has made me a bit of a realist now.
I like college hockey and I will continue to follow the Lakers but please don't ask me to expect much of anything from them because I no longer will.

Yea I agree that this is an awesome thing for their program and hopefully it will convince Tom Anastos not to have his nose so high up in the air and include UAH into this conference...if he doesn't though, I say he deserves every headache he will get from trying to fairly schedule games in an 11 team conference...As far as the tournament goes this is how I see it:
Denver, Miami, Wisconsin, BC, North Dakota, Bemidji, Yale, Ferris and Cornell are all pretty much locks to get into the tournament regardless of what happens the rest of the way....
-There are 10 at large bids and 6 automatics bid for the conference winners (16 total)
-UAH is in, and Bemidji is a lock for an at large (14 bids left)
-Only 1 WCHA team will get the automatic bid for winning the conference tournament, lets say it's Denver..Wisconsin and NoDak take 2 more bids (11 bids left)
- Cornell and Yale are in the same conference and barring a run by say Union, these two will meet in the finals so let's say Cornell wins the tourney, Yale will very likely pick up an at large (9 bids left)
- The AHA will get an automatic bid, but have no teams with a shot for an at large (8 bids left)

BC has already moved on to the next round and is a lock for the tournament no matter what, but tonight there are 3 game 3's (I included the teams PWR rankings in parentheses) Vermont(14) vs. UNH (12), Maine (20) vs. Umass-Lowell (15), and BU (21) vs. Merrimack (NR)...So there are 5 teams remaining in Hockey East that have PWR's between 14 and 21 and basically have their destiny in their hands...on paper it looks like BC should end up winning the tournament with one of the remaining 5 ranked teams (sorry, Merrimack) making a run to the finals, and based on the high level of competition they'll have to face to get there, the team that would theoretically lose to BC in the finals would end up getting themselves an at large bid, which would leave 4 bids left... BUT that number could shrink to 3 if BC gets knocked off and 2 of the bubble teams end up meeting in the finals, it could be enough to propel even the loser of the title game in that situation to an at at large bid....It could even shrink to 2 if this perfect storm happens:
-UNH beats Vermont tonight
-Umass-Lowell beats Maine, and BU beats Merrimack, setting up UNH (12) vs. Umass-Lowell (15) and BC (4) vs. BU (21) for next weekend
- Umass-Lowell beats UNH and BU beats BC
-BU beats Umass-Lowell in the finals
UNH has the highest PWR of the remaining 5 teams at the 12th spot..there is a possibility that a win tonight against 14th ranked Vermont is enough to secure them an at large bid regardless of how they finish...Umass Lowell at 15 would gain leverage by beating 20th ranked Maine tonight and then 12 ranked UNH next week and thus making it to the finals...although I wouldn't call it likely, I could see them securing an at large for the strength of those 2 victories even though they would hypothetically lose in the finals...and then BU of course would get the automatic bid. From that point the remaining 2 at large bids (or 3-4 if those situations didn't occur) would be a crapshoot. From where I sit right now I would be more surprised if NMU didn't make the tournament than if they did...although I would be disapointed if that happend because I just don't believe that NMU is a better team than either MSU or U of M but thats the way the system goes I guess..(here's hoping Michigan can win the title so they get the automatic and then either Ferris or Miami would take the at-large bid that the 'Cats seem to have lined up currently)...food for thought

JN ..... believe me, I know how ugly things can get for the fans. I have been on both sides of the glass and the frustrations of the fans over the years are by far the greater pain, especially over years. Players move on to new challenges...fans stay.
Expectations are not important, results are. That said, low expectations are never a good thing. It contributes to mediocrity. Falling short of high expectations is better than meeting low ones.
Hopefully at some point you will be back at Taffy enjoying the games. In my experience 1/3 jump on early, 1/3 jump on when things start to turn around, and 1/3 wait for a special year....its a big wagon and all are welcome, as they find their comfort level.
Here is a little tidbit from the process; The renovation originally was to be a retro project, like Conseco Fieldhouse in Indy, modern amenities but an "old school" feel. Some of our consultants said "you know who thinks thats a good idea? Old farts like you!" (us at the table). That is why the renovation is so modern in the approach. It is built to excite the student athletes of today, and tomorrow..this is the ipod generation, and the flashy, high tech approach is what can differentiate LSSU from other arenas and team facilities. The "old barn" feel of Taffy-Abel combined with the "new school" team facilities are a solid mix.

I think Ferris is safe no matter what happens, but it's 100 percent certain.

Lets set the record straight, since you brought it up. We have never said LSSU can't get the best players. The Laker coach has said he can't get the best players and that's why he doesn't even try recruiting the Tier 1 US league (USHL). Instead they focus their time combing the Tier 2 Canadian leagues.
We've had this discussion on these message boards before. I've screamed it until I'm Laker Blue in the face. If BG can recruit great USHL talent to go play in the middle of an Ohio cornfield, with shoddy hockey facilities & a subpar rink, why do the Lakers think they can't??
If a new facility on campus gives the coach some confidence that he can start recruiting from the USHL, then I'm all for it. But the current facilities shouldn't be used as an excuse as to why they're not, because they're far from being the worst in the conference.

Lets set the record straight, since you brought it up. We have never said LSSU can't get the best players. The Laker coach has said he can't get the best players and that's why he doesn't even try recruiting the Tier 1 US league (USHL). Instead they focus their time combing the Tier 2 Canadian leagues.
We've had this discussion on these message boards before. I've screamed it until I'm Laker Blue in the face. If BG can recruit great USHL talent to go play in the middle of an Ohio cornfield, with shoddy hockey facilities & a subpar rink, why do the Lakers think they can't??
If a new facility on campus gives the coach some confidence that he can start recruiting from the USHL, then I'm all for it. But the current facilities shouldn't be used as an excuse as to why they're not, because they're far from being the worst in the conference.
