The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1 - #58

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1 - #58

As some of you may or may not know, I have been working, researching and compiling information to put into a formula that I have been working on for the past two years. My goal was to create a formula that could rank our college hockey programs as impartially as possible. After creating the formula, I spent a great deal of time going through every media guide I could get my hands on to compile the information necessary to plug into my formula. I have finished my research, and over the next few days, I will be unveiling the top programs according to this formula.

Stay tuned...#58 is coming shortly.

Pretty cool idea.

Are you including time for some programs at DII/DIII?

Who ****ing cares about the exact number of students enrolled in these teeny weeny schools? Just have Osorojo do a study on it.

FS23, keep up the good work, sir.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1 - #58

So, dmj seems to have been right with his figures...not sure about his facts though as AIC is clearly smaller (1729)...but definitely, BY FAR, the smallest in Hockey East.

'Mack is also, BY FAR, the closest school in Hockey East to a Fuddruckers. I'm relatively sure that's worth as much in these rankings as total enrollment.

I'm glad we've got to the bottom of this.

The Air Force Academy has been an improving program over the last five years. Since switching from the CHA to Atlantic Hockey, the Falcons have yet to have a losing season, and have made 3 NCAA Tournament appearances, including reaching the Quarterfinals in 2009. The Falcons had several chances to punch their ticket to the Frozen Four, but were unable to best Vermont. If Air Force can continue their winning ways, expect more tournament appearances out of the Falcons, and a rise in their program's all-time ranking. For now though, Air Force winds up at #42.

#42 Air Force - 4.1704 Points
#43 Quinnipiac - 3.8994 Points
#44 Mercyhurst - 3.468 Points
#45 Merrimack - 3.1402 Points
#46 Massachusetts - 3.0035 Points
#47 Alaska - 2.9892 Points
#48 Nebraska Omaha - 2.9092 Points
#49 Minnesota State - 2.3131 points
#50 Alabama Huntsville - 1.9469 Points
#51 Army - 1.3604 points
#52 Union - 0.6174 points
#53 UConn - 0.1921 Points
#54 Sacred Heart - 0.1703 Points
#55 Bentley - .0279 points
#56 Robert Morris - .0245 points
#57 Canisius - .0205 points
#58 American International - .0061 points

Very true. Each school's total points are divided by distance to closest Fuddruckers. Once you have that total, you divide by total enrollment, taking out graduate students, and then subtract the dollar amount of state and local funding the school has received. After reaching this total, you multiply by pi for the fun of it, add in how many total fuddruckers are within walking distance to the hockey arena and then again divide by total enrollment.

I went to Fudds Saturday before the MC game. Always stop in before a game for a burger and some suds.

Is Colgate top 29 or bottom half? I bet their run in 1989-1990 is what's currently keeping them afloat without being mentioned.

The Seawolves land at #41. Despite struggling in the WCHA for much of the last two decades, Anchorage had a strong run in the early 90's that lead to 3 straight NCAA Tournaments. It was in 1991 that they had their greatest run to date, upsetting Boston College in the First Round before losing to eventual National Champion Northern Michigan in the Quarterfinals. UAA has won more games against NCAA Title teams (118) than any other school listed so far. Since joining the WCHA though the Seawolves have yet to post a winning season. If they can get things turned around, they will have chances to move up. For now, UAA sits at #41.

Are you saying that a win over Michigan Tech or Bowling Green is worth more than a win over New Hampshire, or is this just a fun fact you're throwing out?

My understanding is that he's saying a win over Bowling Green in the same year that they won the national title is worth more.

But I could be implying more merit than is warranted.

It's part of the formula, so yes. If/when New Hampshire actually wins a National Championship, then a win against UNH will equal a win against Michigan Tech/Bowling Green.

Re: The Greatest Programs of All-Time: #1 - #58

So if Merrimack ever wins a title Maine is going to skyrocket up the standings. :p

I forsee a huge gap between Eastern and Western schools considering a victory against a bottom feeder like Tech is meaningful because they won a championship when I was a baby.

Edit: And before this devolves into a flamefest, I'm just giving one take on the situation, not saying the whole formula or the rankings are garbage; and there will be plenty of time for this to devolve into an East vs. West thread later. Opinions are like *******s - everyone has one. My only problem with this list is that he's doing it in February, not May :p
