The republican party has been lurching further and further right for decades now. In just a few years the entire party will have turned over to people like MTG. And the democrats will STILL be led by people who think there is a reason to be bipartisan. Do you actually believe we will be functioning better politically in a few years? Because if we are not, our country is over. My only hope anymore is we just let it end peacefully and don't bother with Civil War II. Peaceful division is a fantasy because we are all mixed up geographically -- the cities are civilized raisins in the doughy cake of rural fascism.

Only thing to do is fight it out in the legislatures and courts. If the orcs turn to violence so much the better since the Plutes and corporations currently on the fence or milking them will instantly move to our side to preserve a predictable market.

There is no way the orcs can win. With fits and starts, people get more educated, more tolerant, and less religious over time. These violent reactionary failures have always been out there in the countryside. They lose steam with every generation.

My suggestion is we immediately stop dragging them along behind us and stopping begging them (and funding them) to try to civilize them. Amputate. End their subsidies. If they want federal dollars make them come hat in hand begging for it, and then lay down the rules where we will oblige: federal election standards, civilized protections of women's and minority rights, gun control, modern education, high state taxes so the federal government doesn't have to do the lifting while their state and local officials free ride.

If they want to be "free," fine, they're free of our help. Enjoy being North American Somalia. We'll cruise by occasionally to rescue a few bright kids and bang their daughters for $3.

Yeah, come to find out, it was a college calculus textbook being used as pre-college prep in a Florida school, and *one* person objected to it because she has an axe to grind against the blacks anyway. She's a member of a "Moms4Liberty" group which is actively trying to get MLK Jr. biographies blocked throughout Tennessee.

We're also not doing any of the things you suggest in this post Kep, and our current progressive party will never make it so, no matter what. Too many people on our side want to be bipartisan. Too many people on our side want to bring the other side up and save them. Too many people on our side also seem to think it is OK for us to wait, patiently and for decades on end, for the world to reach some critical mass you think is imminent when there will be so many of us that success is assured. If we keep doing things the way we are doing them, the very best we can hope for is a never ending cycle of republican taking us 3 steps closer to the brink and then democrats pulling us back a step. At some point, and that point is coming very, very soon, we will cross the line.

And in the meantime, how many more unarmed black men will be shot by white supremacist cops? How many women will be forced to lose even more control over their own bodies? How many of those women will die from back alley abortions or in childbirth from a pregnancy come to term that should have ended 7 or 8 months earlier because of a known risk to her? How many more times will we have to wait out an insurrection, crossing our fingers that the military will still be mostly on the side of the constitution instead of joining the coup?

Everything I have seen for the entirety of this century has led me to think there are no more political or judicial solutions to what is wrong with this place. All of the signs are there and we better come to grips with the fact the solutions are going to be pretty ugly. If peaceful division is a fantasy (and I suspect on that point you are correct) then you better get used to the idea that within your lifetime the peace is not going to last. Political violence is already here, we've seen it in fits and starts. And we're going to see it a whole lot more. We have a DOJ that is allegedly helmed by progressives that refuses to hold accountable people who actually tried to violently steal power in our government. You think they are going to do any better when the same people start blowing up polling places?

How exactly do you end their subsidies without hurting the raisins in your fascism dough?
 
It was hard to find everything because some of it was buried in replies. But good god.

I had no idea the Russians had their fingers in that campaign. I haven't really looked back at that campaign but obviously if manafort was involved...
