Jesus. Half a gill of whiskey, twice a day as a prescription. That's 4 oz per day, every day.

No wonder they all died at like 45 (among those who didn't get gangrene or illness associated with shitting in your drinking water)

I'm sure many of them were indulging more than prescribed. It was the 18th century, so how else did one cope with the trauma of poverty, debtors' prison, impressment as teenagers, lots of lashings ordered by a hard-nosed ship captain, etc?

Plus, factor in the shipping tech of the time - sinkings happened regularly. Also, a regular diet of ship's hardtack for weeks on end isn't the most nutritious.
