The Global War on Terror 5.0: Putin on the Risk

Supposedly, by treaty, any attack on one NATO country is an attack on all, which would require a unifled response. No more leading from behind then!

Currently there are 28 member countries, only Latvia and Estonia abut Russia directly. But if Russia annexes Belarus, that might also put Lithuania and Poland in play.

So if Putin gobbles up every nation in Europe that isn't part of NATO no one in Western Europe will bat an eye? What if he starts throwing Jews in <s>Concentration</s> Resettlement Camps? If a weird, ash-colored snow starts falling they'll just chalk that up to a volcano erupting somewhere? At some point the folks in Europe have to stop looking to us to solve their problems for them.

They'll do it as soon as they are inconvenienced and no sooner. This is why we (Americans) tend to laugh at the idea of a unified Europe and European army. When the chips fall they will start to blame the other states and those that can stay out will try to do so (Spain, Italy, France, Norway...) basically anybody that doesn't border the trouble. Germany on east needs to start up-arming and the US has to start talking about missile defense again. If you want Russia to back down then a credible force has to be presented.

Until then, they'll just futz and talk.

Europeans and Ukrainians get to solve their own problems! What a novel concept. Otherwise live with the threat of Putin shutting off your gas and annexing countries. If he threatens a NATO country, start bombing his ***. Otherwise if these countries wanted US protection, they should have formed an alliance. You shouldn't get the benefit of NATO protection without contributing anything to it.

Prime Minister Harper isn't waiting for the feckless one to lead from the front. It's a small contribution, but it is a contribution nonetheless.

Canada will commit six CF-18 fighter jets and 20 military advisers to help NATO bolster its sorties over eastern Europe in response to the escalation of pro-Russian military activity in Ukraine.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the announcement after meeting Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Thomas Lawson on Thursday to discuss what Canada has in its limited inventory to help the 28-member alliance.

the US has to start talking about missile defense again

in retrospect, it was quite the mistake to bail out on the promised missile defenses to Poland and the Czech Republic, eh? :(

another version of the "domino theory" in reverse.....

Ummm...I know logic isn't your strong suit, but good would missile defense do in this situation?!? It never covered Ukraine, and Russia isn't invading Poland...

Re: The Global War on Terror 5.0: Putin on the Risk

Perhaps much more than symbolic! If Canadian forces (NATO members) are engaged by Russian forces, what happens then? hmm.....
You mean after there's nothing left of Vlad's MIGs? ;). Don't mess with the RCAF!

The KHL expands to Markham?
And Vlad orders the kidnapping of a Markham lad named Stamkos.

I cannot believe you seriously asked that question. Wow. We may disagree politically from time to time, but at least I thought you knew how to think......

Putin sees a series of capitulations to his demands, one after another, while he offers nothing substantive in return throughout. yet that pattern, that series, one after the other, doesn't lead to anything further?

Truly, on something this important, I'd have hoped you could set aside partisan banter and examine it seriously. You should expect better of yourself.

Nothing? Otherwise, NATO would be forced into any armed conflict that we start (Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.)

So let me get this straight Fishbreath. You think a missile defense system covering a country not under threat by Russia will deter troops on the ground in a different country who's movements are in no way impeded by said missile defense system? Oooookaaayyyyy....

The question then is, why when your hero GWB was President, did Putin invade his other neighbor, Georgia???? Didn't I in one post just destroy your credibility on this issue, no?

PS - I think your nostalgia for the Cold War might be getting mixed up in your nostalgia with being a bit younger and less bitter. I'm here to tell you those two things aren't related - if the Cold War returned, you wouldn't suddenly get any younger and any more fun to be around. :D

I still feel the missle shield thing is meant for Iran.... BUT... if it ****es off Putin so much maybe there's a good reason... it weakens his hand.

edit: I have every belief that if Putin wanted to make missle rain on a country a shield won't do much... BUT... it does up Putin's price. If that price increase keeps others free I'm all for it.

Sounds like this Boko Haram group is getting a bit out of control. First the kidnappings and now they killed 300+ in a massacre at an open market. They came in with three armored personnel carriers and opened fire. Then decided to burn people alive in the businesses where they were hiding.

I'm thinking a couple of well-placed Tomahawks wouldn't be such a bad thing here. Not to get involved in another "war" but at some point you need to step up.

I'm guessing Seal Team 6 is already in-country.
