The Generic Racism Thread 1: Lift Every Voice and Sing

Allendale, MI: City votes 5-2 to keep Confederate memorial statue.

According to some friends who live there, this is not surprising. This is the same town that thinks kids receiving LGBT education is SCARY.

I think it's clear enough since it's a town in freaking MI that put up a confederate statue to begin with...

Michigan: once you get into the metropolitan areas, it's fine. Allendale is basically GVSU and "the common clay of the new West."

Yeah but last I checked Michigan was not fighting for the South so Confederate Memorials make even less sense...

I dare someone to pay to have this banner flown nearby

MLH isn't a pushover. It's not just that he's incredibly smart and understands what he's talking about. He'd spent years on Fox News having to explain this shit to people. Him vs an entire panel of people.

As soon as he started essentially footnoting his sentences in real time, all I could think was a) holy shit he knows his stuff. (Ironically the guest on the left came to that conclusion as well in the cringiest possible way.). b) Holy shit this guy is out of his league and the guy on the right's reaction was " I'm going to enjoy watching him eat this man alive."

This is Christmas for Dr. Mrs. Her dissertation (which I copy edited about 9 drafts of... ugh) was in critical legal studies (rape narratives in LA court proceedings from 1910 through 1960, and how they were presented differently for white, black, Latino, and Asian defendants) and she shakes the walls to the ground whenever RWNJs and even sincere allies make the conflation the guy on the left does.

I am impressed. MLH is the only pundit I've heard explain this in a way which is technically precise and also coherent to the average college educated person. If you have read much in this field, the jargon and Delphic Mystery is usually pestilential. He manages to be (1) relevant, (2) accurate, and (3) still passionate. I hope he's written a book.

As a fan of the Fighting ... Hawks ... and I have taken that new moniker on with gear and hats ...

When will the NCAA take on the rest of the race based names?

Their policy remains, "The NCAA objects to institutions using racial/ethnic/national origin* references in their intercollegiate athletics programs." This was first espoused by NCAA President Myles Brand in 2005.

Heck, even Dan Snyder and the Washington NFL franchise changed!

But yet today ...
  • Fighting Irish
  • Seminoles
  • Vandals
  • Chippewas
  • Quakers

*I call that RENO -- race, ethinicity, national origin

FSU and CMU were granted waivers due to support from local tribes who gave the ok to continue to use the names and continue to work with the universities oh how depictions can/should be used.

You are reaching A LOT on Vandals. By that logic, Spartans, Trojans, etc should be on your little list.

If you even glance at the history of Penn you will not only see why the name Quakers fits, but also is not problematic at all.

Notre Dame was largely founded by Irish Catholics. And much of the student body for much of its history was Irish. They adopted that name after others tried to use it in a derogatory manner. They turned it right back against them. I would venture that if you polled Irish Americans or those native to Ireland, they would continue to support the name by a huge margin.

I do not for 1 second believe you actually care about these nicknames/mascots on your little list and are just playing your usual part of concern troll.

Yes, they should. (I never claimed my list was comprehensive.)

The NCAA is looking like a follower, not leader, when NFL Washington and MBL Cleveland are making changes and the NCAA hasn't finished enforcing all aspects of their policy.

Which part of FSU and CMU have the tribes approval to use their name, which is in accord with NCAA policy, are you struggling with?

Then the Packers, Saints, Raiders, Vikings, Buccaneers, 49ers, Warriors, Knicks, Wizards, Canadians, Yankees, Rangers, Canucks, Knights, and many more need to change their names according to your concern troll logic. If its not an animal or an inanimate object then they should change their name. Again, I do NOT believe you have any actual concern for this and are just doing your "just asking the question" bull crap you always do. STOP. And welcome to the fucking ignore list.

Those don't fit the NCAA's RENO criteria, save for Canadians and Canucks (and those two are NHL). And one could argue Vikings and Yankees.

I'm wondering why the NCAA didn't finish the job they started based on the criteria they laid out. And given the climate (meaning NFL Washington changed), they well could and probably should.

RENO: race, ethnicity, national origin.

I have a cat and a yoga instructor.

Neither of them can twist themselves into pretzels like you.

By your logic, we'd also have to exclude "Barbarians."
