The delights of irony

BERLIN — Fans hoping to catch a glimpse of U2's free concert celebrating 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall will have to "scale these city walls" after organizers threw up a massive barrier to block the view for those without tickets.

The move has triggered outrage from Berliners, who see the irony in building walls around a concert dedicated to the wall that has come down.

Music network MTV, which organized Thursday's concert in front of the Brandenburg Gate, did not respond to requests for comment.

Wait, hold on a second there...

Its a FREE concert, but they won't let people see it unless they have a ticket? U2 is a bunch of dooshbag tools :D

OK:

A) If MTV organized the concert, then presumably this was their decision, rather than the band's.
B) Whether or not a concert is free, there are only so many people that can fit inside a given area, and if you cram more in, there's a risk of stampedes and the like. Seems like it makes sense to cap it at some number.

That being said, the irony is still amusing.

Neither of those things change the fact that saying

is a truthful statement.

Re: The delights of irony

I think the irony would have been more apparent if Pink Floyd was playing.

1 - Do you honestly think U2 had anything to do with that decision?

2 - Despite the irony, it is perfectly reasonable, for safety purposes, to limit the number of people in a given space.

I could swear somebody else made those exact same points earlier today.

Oh wait:

:p

Anyway, I think you guys need to get your insults right. It's reasonable to say that Bono is a pompous, self-important windbag (and I'm a huge U2 fan, but I'd still agree with that) but probably what you've been saying is overstating the case.

Still my all-time favorite episode of Futurama (assuming the picture is Bender though it's blocked here at work; I recognize the quote, though)...I can't wait til the new episodes start airing.

Re: The delights of irony

my perception of U2's frontman is that he brings a lot of attention to himself and also brings a lot of attention and money to important matters such as hunger, third world debt, racism etc.

That makes him a tool?

I'm sure there are plenty of things he's done that rubbed people the wrong way or don't reflect the general intent of his causes... the perils of living a public life for 30 years?

Are there performers that have done more to use their fame for positive causes over the course of the last few decades?

I havent' done any research on the matter, perhaps the efforts one hears about in TV interviews and the occasional article in mainstream press are overstated or just PR.

Also strikes me that those criticizing the need for tickets would be the same to sue as soon as somebody broke an ankle due to 'gross disregard for public safety' by holding an event sure to cause a riot with no consideration of appropriate occupancy of the venue.

Well, it IS the irony thread. :p

But he doesn't do that for everyone though. He merely brings my attention to how much of a huge pompous dickbag he is, as well as how repetitive and uninspiring the music is.

Obviously, just my opinion. :p

BTW, I'm not blaming U2 for this. I hate MTV more than I hate U2. I just like how they built a wall to keep people from seeing a concert on the anniversary of the wall coming down. It's simply hilarious.

Re: The delights of irony

I love how the BBC is taking the high ground here in the sidebar disclaimer:

(I knew I'd find a place to post this)

Re: The delights of irony

Too easy. Everything post-Bob Newhart is meta-ironic. I still don't get the vanilla irony part.

Well, your confusion is justified. No doubt the BBC could legitimately claim moral authority over the Vatican. But the fact that they apparently did so on accident struck me as funny, if not ironic.
The grim irony of the Vatican itself being that they publicly decry the perversions that they practice privately (of the sort, the viewing of which the BBC disclaimer is probably meant to disown). Does that count?
