The definitive tournament speculation thread

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

R play-in games a possibility...not to mess things up but how would that work?...does that allow the committee some flexibility without messing up the total # of teams in the actual tournament and the east - west ratio of teams.

Never Mind Dumb Thinking I C that only 11 teams counting play-in. I thought you might be able to play in to the 11 teams.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

They are close enough that I think the league championship game has to trump any other secondary criteria. It's Manhattanville in the tournament.

a "championship game" is just another game when it comes to selection time. If anything it comes down to Elmira's 2-5 in their last seven vs Manh. high school schedule.

Taking out each other:

Elmira has played 4 games against (probably) teams in the tourney, 3 vs the #1 or #2

Manhatanville has played 1, and lost, to the probably 7 or 8 seed.

One word, ADRIAN. DUH. I believe there was also a 20 game winner in the ECAC NE..but just like them they didn't have the resume to be in the tourney after playing all their high school calibar teams.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

I'm in the camp that thinks we're looking at a 7-4 split, with SNC, Adrian, GAC and St. Thomas in the West. St. Scholastica's lack of a tournament bid is self-inflicted by not advancing far enough in the NCHA tourney.

I also don't think that the committee is going to do anything too cute with the brackets. It's just a matter of how many teams they want from the West at Lake Placid. I suspect that number is 1, so we're looking at two games Wednesday night with the de facto regional final on Saturday night.

I'll let someone else handle the East, as you're better with that region than I am, but here's what I think we're looking at out West:

Adrian at SNC (I still think they're going to use the 500 mile rule)
St. Thomas at GAC

The seeds don't necessarily hold, but I don't think they're going to overthink this much, and keep to the 500 mile rule as best as they can.

got to give mville some credit as they went 2-1 at elmira to
finish the season, winning the last 2. no easy feat.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

My crystal ball says 7-4 split with the west sending one team to the final four.

Then you don't have the 4 western teams matching up against one another in the quaterfinals, meaning one of them is getting shipped east.

Which would be this scenario. The one I am putting my money on.

NCAA Field
1- Oswego (bye)
2- Norwich (bye)
3- St. Norbert
4- Middlebury (bye)
5- Plattsburgh (bye)
6- Bowdoin (bye)
7- Gustavus Adolphus
8- Manhattanville
9- Adrian
10- St. Thomas
11- Curry

Play-ins
Curry @ Manhattanville
Adrian @ St. Norbert
St. Thomas @ Gustavus Adolphus

NCAA Quarterfinals
Curry/Manhattanville @ Oswego
Bowdoin @ Norwich
Plattsburgh @ Middlebury
UST/GAC winner vs. Adrian/SNC winner (highest remaining seed hosts)

No.

What would happen is that the top 5 in the East would get byes, and that there would be two play in games out West on Wednesday, and 1 quarterfinal on Saturday. There would be 1 play in game in the East, then 3 QF games on Saturday.

Or what Rennell just said right before me.

I don't see how you have the west's #1 seed in SNC having to play a play in game, with some Pool C's getting byes to the quarterfinals. Makes no sense.

I think that what they're doing is locking in 2 flights at most.

Look's like I get to quote myself again.

So you think it is more likely they reward the lowest ranked teams and make the majority of the higher ranked teams play in a play-in? Something like this?

NCAA Field
1- Oswego (bye)
2- Norwich
3- St. Norbert (bye)
4- Middlebury
5- Plattsburgh
6- Bowdoin
7- Gustavus Adolphus (bye)
8- Manhattanville
9- Adrian (bye)
10- St. Thomas (bye)
11- Curry

Play-ins
Curry @ Norwich
Manhattanville @ Middlebury
Bowdoin @ Plattsburgh

NCAA Quarterfinals
Adrian @ St. Norbert
St. Thomas @ Gustavus Adolphus
Bowdoin/Plattsburgh winner @ Oswego
Manhattanville/Middlebury winner @ Curry/Norwich

That seems a lot more ridiculous than my previous projection, doesn't it?

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Exactly what I was driving at. Matt is right on

Sure, that looks fine to me, but it would result in 2 western teams in the FF. You said your crystal ball told you a 7-4 split with one western team in the FF.

(I'm referring to Rennel's 2nd scenerio...)

No, the west will play on Wednesday with the winners playing on Saturday, the winner of the Saturday goes to the final four.

My second scenario wasn't meant to be taken seriously. It was made to show how ridiculous it is.

No scenario is perfect, but my first and real projection is as close as we can get under the current system that the NCAA uses. (IE: flights kept to a minimum.)

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

I really doubt that, it was the fact that the west will have one team at Placid that I agree with.. I think he has the teams right but of course I think Norwich will remain number one.:)

Is he right on as to 1E & 2E

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Two teams from the West will be in Lake Placid.

Adrian at SNC

STU at GAC

There is no way the West will have both Play-In games. SNC and Adrian might be the top two teams in the tournament.

The NCAA will get it right. The eastern teams will be in the play in games.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

This is the way it should be. The Western group will go wild if they are in two play in games. It will be all out war on the conf. call. The coaches and group memebers from the West will not settle on the play-in games. Western hockey deserves more respect in all areas.
