The Countries: Forget it, Burkina Faso, Michigan is still the worst.

This truly is one of the most morally reprehensible actions ever taken, but sadly for anyone who knows Uganda, not terribly surprising. Way too infested with indigenous evangelical nonsense that's flavored with American missionary money. No nickel of American money should ever make its way to Uganda while this law stands. Worst case scenario is that one of the most incompetent militaries in Africa no longer gets our money to go get it's a** kicked in Somalia. Oh noes.

This is how you handle seditionists:

A Brazilian court on Friday, June 30, barred far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro from holding public office for eight years over making unfounded claims against the country's voting system.

Prosecutors blamed Bolsonaro's statements for a violent invasion of the presidential palace, Congress and Supreme Court in January by supporters angry about his electoral loss to leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

In a verdict that stretched over several days, five of the seven judges on Brazil's Superior Electoral Tribunal voted to censure Bolsonaro for alleged abuses of power, while two found in his favor. The tribunal tried the 68-year-old Bolsonaro, over a televised meeting he held with foreign diplomats in July 2022, three months before his election defeat to Lula.

Bolsonaro spent nearly an hour making his argument to the assembled ambassadors but presented no hard evidence to back his claims that electronic voting machines in use since 1996 compromised election transparency. The TSE ruling means Bolsonaro will be ineligible to stand in the presidential election in 2026, opening the contest for a new leader of Brazil's political right.

Bolsonaro was not present for the ruling in Brasilia, traveling instead to Belo Horizonte in Brazil's southeast, where he was scheduled to have lunch with members of his Liberal Party. On Thursday, he insisted he was innocent, telling reporters: "Wanting to take away my political rights for abuse of political power is inexplicable."

Italy leading the way in right-wing reactionary behavior in the 20s. This seems familiar. https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2023/07/...rental-rights/

I'd be curious to know if the EU has any legal remedies they could flex regarding member states curtailing human rights. If they do, I'm guessing they do not specifically address marriage and/or same-sex relationships.

Meanwhile, this paragraph was particularly jarring:

While same-sex civil unions have been legal in the country since 2016, same-sex couples do not have the right to adopt, thanks in part to opposition from the Catholic Church. Surrogacy remains illegal in Italy and there are restrictions that prevent the adoption of “stepchildren” by one parent. Medically assisted reproduction, like in vitro fertilization (IVF), is only available to heterosexual couples.

Just when you thought it was only Italy's courts that were biased and backwards. Catholicism's political influence is a cancer.

IINM the EU has warned Poland of their similar Catholic derpiness, and Hungary for their wherever it comes from (Orban is an atheist who wraps himself in Christianity for fascist aims, like Dump).

The Right is a cancer; cut it out before it kills us all.

Israeli lawmakers on Monday approved a key portion of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s divisive plan to reshape the country’s justice system despite massive protests that have exposed unprecedented fissures in Israeli society.

The vote came after a stormy session in which opposition lawmakers chanted “shame” and then stormed out of the chamber.

It reflected the determination of Netanyahu and his far-right allies to move ahead with the plan, which has tested the delicate social ties that bind the country, rattled the cohesion of its powerful military and repeatedly drawn concern from its closest ally, the United States.

The overhaul calls for sweeping changes aimed at curbing the powers of the judiciary, from limiting the Supreme Court’s ability to challenge parliamentary decisions to changing the way judges are selected. Netanyahu and his allies say the changes are needed to curb the powers of unelected judges.

Earlier, demonstrators, many of whom feel the very foundations of their country are being eroded by the government’s plan, blocked a road leading up to the parliament, and big mall chains and some gas stations shuttered their doors in protest.

Further ratcheting up the pressure on Netanyahu, thousands of military reservists have declared their refusal to serve under a government taking steps that they see as setting the country on a path to dictatorship. Those moves have prompted fears that the military’s preparedness could be compromised.

The protests have been pretty large and consistent, and I think will only grow as this news gets out.

The world has a real fascism problem at the moment. I hope we win. Dark times if we don't.

So glad Israeli citizens decided to (indirectly, I know) vote Bibi back into power. This is a Trump preview if we’re dumb enough to vote him back into power again.

Israel is like the US and Turkey. The radical Right realizes they have a choice between power and democracy, and they are picking power.

Bibi is Dump or Erdogan.

Your bad? Drew posted that, Kepler.

...?

Oh. MissT's response is immediately after my post on my feed because Drew is... at an undisclosed location. Her response fit perfectly, as I had posted about the 2023 Niger coup (successful) by mistakenly linking a story about the 2021 Niger coup (unsuccessful).
