Since I really don't pay attention to exactly what rules the western leagues use and how it has changed over the last few years, are there likely to have been other 3-on-3 OT games which I might have to change, and how far back would I have to go?

NCHC started doing less than 5v5 OT last year to break NCAA ties. I think B1G might have as well. WCHA started this season.

Ralph - honestly UMD keeps the Belt. BSU posesses the alternate Belt.

Of course, it should be rendered moot tonight in the rematch in -27°F Bemidji.

My main concern is not that but if I have made the same switch before, and second what exactly is going on? As I said, I do not follow exactly what is going on out west.

We have always allowed belts to change hands in regular overtimes as is still done in the east. Do the western leagues immediately go to 4 on 4 or 3 on 3 in OT or only after five minutes? BTW, remember that OTs used to be 10 minutes.

all the western leagues play 5v5 OT for 5 minutes, if no goal is scored that goes down as an NCAA tie. After that they typically play more OT with l as players which only has conference implications, eventually they get to a shootout.

That would mean that one would have to go through the Belt, the western league belts, and the Michigan and Minnesota belts for the last year and check everything. Does anyone feel like doing that? I could post those belts if someone wants to check through them.

Hi Ralph,

Others have already answered, which is good, since I don't pay close attention to optional rules allowed by the NCAA, but not required across the board. I still remember that Hockey East was the first league to have shootouts, but when the other leagues refused to go along the league had to drop them after 2 seasons. Now Now the western leagues are all for shootouts and 3-on-3 overtimes go determine a winner and Hockey East appears to have no interest in them.

I checked The Belt and there were no 3-on-3 wins until the BSU-UMD game on Friday.

Whoever is responsible for entering WCHA game summaries on USCHO has not been noting 3-on-3 overtime or shootouts, but I looked at the composite schedule on the WCHA website, which does have that information. The belt appears to be fine, but on the alternate belt Bowling Green won 3-on-3 vs UAA on 11/25. As this is the alternate belt does it just go to BG, or is another alternate belt created? I forgot how this was handled.

I would think that if we are going to regard 3-on-3 as only giving Alternate Belts then another Alternate Belt needs to be started. I have been using collegehockeystats for information on nonstandard ways of deciding games.
