The College Hockey Championship Belt Part III

Re: The College Hockey Championship Belt Part III

It's been a long time, but I as I recall you are correct. By the way, only the Ivies play "scrimmages" against each other, as the NCAA counts all such "scrimmages" against a team's 34 contest limit.

Sean

I'm well aware the scrimmages count against the NCAA 34, but not the Ivy 29.

interesting point that it does count against the NCAA limit. There are new things popping up every few years which haven't been dealt with before, and the thread where we discussed things has been expunged by USCHO.

They've been doing this for years, so if we were to count the "scrimmages" all of a sudden, we'd have to go way back and update not only the Ivy belt proceedings, but potentially ECAC, New England, and "Belt". Because they don't count for RatingsPI/PWR stipulations, they are exhibition games. And as previously stated, those don't count here, even if both teams are eligible for the belt in question.

But yes, the NCAA by-laws are very particular as to what constitutes an official "contest". These sorts of matches are not exempt under any circumstances, similar to matches against D-III or ACHA opponents.

Actually, BC defeated Harvard on 2 Mar 1922 and it is counted as an official game by both BC and Harvard today. However, at the time it was not a sanctioned game by either school's athletic department. The newspapers the next day reported the Harvard team was a mix of varsity, second string and freshman, players (and was missing three varsity and 2 second string players), while the BC team was their varsity team. This game actually affected the championship belt and since both schools now count the game Ralph created an alternate belt (the first one created I believe) for BC, but let Harvard keep the belt.

There may be other such games in the belt's history (I know of other games reported as scrimmages at the time that our now counted as official games) and if they are found I expect they will be handled the same way. However, when a game is known to be a scrimmage/exhibition in advance, the game is not counted as a defense of the belt.

Ralph, Once upon a time I wrote my posts in Word before copying and posting them. I still have some of my posts for the belt thread and I can repost them if you are interested. However, most involve information/lists of various belts and most of the posts are likely nonsensical out of context.

it doesn't sound worth the trouble. I have all the Belt histories. They are also posted in the first posts of this thread (except for newer stuff, of course).

Why are QU and Bentley not eligible to take the New England belt from NU?

Re: The College Hockey Championship Belt Part III

Here comes Bucky!

But if Badgers coach Tony Granato had it his way, this season would be the last where old rival North Dakota doesn’t appear on the schedule.

“I would like to play them every year,” he said. “For me, North Dakota-Wisconsin is a must-have on the schedule. There’s too much history. And they want the same, talking to their coaches.

“It’d be nice if they were in our league but they’re not, so let’s find a way to play them every year and keep that going.”

UW and North Dakota, longtime opponents when both were part of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, played non-conference series in Madison in November 2014 and in Grand Forks in November 2015 after the teams left for separate leagues in 2013.

So I'm sure there's a Wisconsin thread...
