I really do not understand DUIs of the wealthy. Having a good income, one of the biggest benefits is being able to rideshare anywhere even if I drink and knowingly will be under the limit. If I was rich, absolutely hiring a private driver.
 
I would say that more than half of DUIs are not about the monetary cost of a cab or rideshare, or a simple bad decision. They are an ego trip for someone in denial about their substance problem. "I don't need help, I'm in control. I've got this. I'll be fine."

The stats bear this out, and it's why serial and "superdrunk" (2x or more the limit) offenders are typically ordered to attend an IOP in addition to mandatory recovery meetings.
 
Speaking of wealthy idiots, Harison Bader just fucked up his already fucked up foot crashing his scooter into the back of an SFFD truck, and he's done this before while three sheets.

When I lived in Vermont (back in the '90s), there was a story about a man who was suing because he felt that a judge's order to re-locate to within walking distance of a liquor store constituted "cruel and unusual punishment." This was part of the sentence handed down for the man's ~35th DUI arrest.

He was totally in control. Totally had this.
