The Cell Phone Thread

Re: The Cell Phone Thread

Verizon doesn't handle upgrades very well. So I am pretty skeptical to start with.
Can you elaborate on this? What kind of upgrades are you talking about? I've upgraded my droid via the network, to a newer version, and it went down flawlessly. This wasn't upgrading to something completely new, though, it was just an update of the current software I already had.

The upgrade itself isn't the issue. It's that they have always been slow in pushing out promised updates. So my skepticism is that the update from 2.3 to 4.0 will not happen in Q1 2012 as announced. Then by the time it actually does come out, Android may be to an even newer version (4.1?).

Why are they even releasing new phones on 2.3 when 4.0 is available?

Another cause for concern is the way the Bionic release was handled. Delayed forever and then when it did come out, no one knew about it. Doesn't inspire confidence in what the company says.

Ah, ok. That makes sense.

Re: The Cell Phone Thread

Back to tablets. Does anyone have one? Is it worth the money? I am really nervous about only having 2gb of data, for $30 per month, when streaming Netflix could work so well on the 4G network. I don't have internet at home, so I'd end up always using the 4G network, and I think my data alotment wound be used up right away. To upgrade to 80gb costs $80 per month and there is no way I'm spending that much...$30 per month more is way to much, IMO. Is it worth having one of them without having the constant internet access?

I have a tablet, but opted for the Wifi only model. No need for 3G on a tablet since I mostly use it at home where I have superfast Wifi.

I have the Acer Tab and it is pretty flippin sweet! I like it ten times more than the Ipad I used to have. :)

Re: The Cell Phone Thread

Might consider Droid Bionic, its slightly better in the tech specs then the I2. Dual processors and more RAM, using the same version of the OS, and supports 4G if you ever decide to use it. Also only a$50 difference in price (going by base prices).
Looks, like it's still just one processor (dual core). What's the advantage of that? Speed? I don't plan on using most of the available memory...

Re: The Cell Phone Thread

Just picked up my first smart phone - an iPhone 4S. Thought about a few others, but Siri was just too cool to pass up and it seemed like the "sure thing" choice (my old dumb phone was a disaster.) Overall, it's NPB.

Siri is hit or miss. Recognizes my voice pretty much flawlessly, even if I rush and slur a little bit. However, it's still pretty limited as to what it can do. I asked it to give me directions to a specific intersection in Anchorage and it bugged out. But when she does work, she's really neat. Hopefully they keep the software upgrades coming - there are quite a few "duh" things it should be able to do that it can't (can't add callers to your contacts, can't install downloaded apps, can't update Facebook/Twitter, can't access voicemail, etc.)

Re: The Cell Phone Thread

in a word, yes. I didn't realize how lame the BB was until I got the iPhone. go ahead, drink the apple koolaid - its good.
Blackberries suck, but I really don't think there is much difference between Androids and iphones. Its just personal preference.

Re: The Cell Phone Thread

My contract is up in January and I can't decide if I want to continue on the Android route or make the switch to the Evil Empire. I currently have an HTC Hero (the Sprint one, not the one with the stupid chin rest) and I'm not that impressed. It has been rebooting the OS with an increasing frequency since I got it and the sensitivity to touch has decreased (despite my keeping a plastic sheet over the interface to "protect" it). There is also occasionally a significant lag. The phone and OS seem built to only last from contract to contract.

Is there a better build quality on other Android phones? Is the iPhone a better bet when it comes to build quality and OS? I'm not the sort of person who needs the latest and greatest, but I do like my smartphone for email access (good for knowing about last minute class cancellations) and for GPS (our ambulance service doesn't provide us with one).

ETA - I've never dropped my phone and do take pretty good care of it - It stays in my pants pocket, on my nightstand, or on a surface nearby.

Re: The Cell Phone Thread

any of the later generation android phones are way better than the Hero. I love my Evo personally (and you can get them cheap) and my buddy has a 3D that he enjoys. any of the Sprint Android phones will do you just fine. The problem with Heroes is that unless you root it at this point it is just too old and slow.

BTW screen protectors are a waste of time. They only help if you drop it on its face, otherwise all they do is decrease touchscreen effectiveness.

As for Iphones...they are boring.

Re: The Cell Phone Thread

I have the HTC Thunderbolt & I love it. Really. No complaints to speak of. 4G, Verizon. Good stuff. It works well for me.

My old Android would burn through the batteries even when sitting idle and I had the gadgets turned off. My iPhone is much better on the battery life, and I use it more than I did my Android. My Android used to go wonky with the touchscreen, touching the letter O, and the phone would register it as an E or W, and I've not had that with my iPhone. I may have just had a bad Android, so there's that.

I think the new Androids have faster processors compared to the iPhone 4S. A top line Android is probably better than the 4S when you look at raw specs. It's more a matter of going to the stores and demoing the various phones to see what you like. Both OS's have their unique features and selling points.

Re: The Cell Phone Thread

I have never had battery issues on any of my Android phones...certainly not like the ones Apple had to fix for the 4S ;)

Meh, I didn't get the 4S. Also, I don't get on the whole OMG APPLE! bandwagon. I just like my phone. The interface isn't perfect, somethings feel too hidden to me, things that were very up front on my Android phone. That said, now that I know where those things are those things aren't really a problem for me.

Mine is up in January too, I'm currently looking at the iPhone 4S, Motorolla Razr and Samsung Galaxy Nexus as I don't want to leave Verizon. It would be a lot easier to choose if one of them had both 4G like the Android phones and the global capability of the iphone. It may come down to just which one feels better in my hand.

It will be my first smartphone, been using justa regular flip phone forever.

It is all a matter of taste. (unless we are talking Apple freaks...they buy the phones even when they dont work!) I prefer an open source and customizeability. Not to mention I never liked the shape and feel of the Iphone. Other than Siri, there is nothing my phone can't do that an Iphone can...and since my phone has voice command, voice text and voice search I don't need Siri anyways :D

Rolevio,

I liked the Galaxy Nexus a lot, very easy to use.

Re: The Cell Phone Thread

Siri workaround for Facebook and Twitter: register your phone with them, then put their SMS number in your contacts and have Siri send them a text.

Re: The Cell Phone Thread

Is there anyway to get dust out from under the screen? Everything I've seen online has said that you need to take the phone apart. I have found guides online on how to take apart my LG Xenon but I am hesitant to do so for fear of destroying it. Over time little specks of dust have built up and it's never really been a problem, until today. Somehow overnight a giant clump of dust formed near the middle of the screen, nearly blacking out what it's covering. I had a screen protector that seemed to slow the amount of dust getting in after having the phone for about a week without one where dust seemed to flood in. I have noticed little tiny holes near where the screen and the on/off buttons come together, as well as a giant hole at the speaker.

I've thought about getting a can of air and trying to blow it out or at least shove it all to the side, but who knows if that will work. Is there any alternative besides taking it apart? I'm not really in a situation to get a new phone, even a cheapy like this was.
