The annual Penn State to NCAA discussion

Re: The annual Penn State to NCAA discussion

Let's be clear on this -- the ACHA team is not being "elevated." The D-1 ACHA team will play this season and next.

The athletic department will hire a coaching staff by next spring, giving them one year to recruit for the varsity team.

What happens to the ACHA squad after 2011-12 is yet to be decided.

Yes, that's why I said "program" not "team." Most likely very few (if any) current ACHA DI players will make the NCAA roster.

I'm not naïve enough to think that players on the ACHA squad will be automatically transferred to the NCAA squad (or even stand a chance of making the NCAA squad), but I watched that Press Conference, in which the AD specifically stated that the Men's and Women's Club Programs were being elevated to varsity status. ;)

This terminology was probably chosen to maintain the history of the program, so that fans of the NCAA team can keep the ACHA titles in their USCHO signatures, like Bemidji fans do for their NAIA, DII, and DIII accolades.

Also, I watched that Press Conference where the AD said, as you say, that the fate of the club program is yet to be decided, but that if interest is sufficient, PSU would "likely field a club team at the lower ACHA level" (D2)

Sheesh, for someone who actually attended the Press conference I'm citing as my source, one would think you'd be able to listen ;) :D

Guilty as charged! :O

You are right that the athletic department is going to do something to mark the history and success of the Icers.

Bottom line is -- the varsity program will be developed while the Icers continue playing in the ACHA through the 2011-12 season. What happens after that when the varsity team begins play will be determined down the road.

Thanks for the idea. ;) To think I had neglected it in the first run at a signature!
