The annual Penn State to NCAA discussion

Re: The annual Penn State to NCAA discussion

There's already a large discussion under the DI thread. Mostly talking about the doom and gloom of a Big 10 Hockey Conference.

On the ACHA side I wonder if this will spur other top ACHA teams to join the NCAA. Lindenwood's women's team is already leaving for the NCAA and men will probably in or a little after 2012. If Penn State leaves for the NCAA as well- there goes some of the powerhouse teams, and esp. in the case of Penn State- a big name team/credibility.

Teams like Rhode Island, Ohio, Delaware, Liberty, Rutgers, etc.. all play Penn State most years (and this year) taking out a team like Penn State reduces not only a top competitor but a big name. Teams like Lindenwood are less known by general sports fans, but fairly well known within the college hockey community. Penn State, Lindenwood and other top programs have professional, organized hockey programs, and put lots of money and effort into them. They help reinforce and add to the ACHA’s reputation of a highly organized and well respected club sport organization.

How can there be "doom and gloom" for a BTHC? Nothing exists at the moment, if anything, the future is a BTHC if the money comes around and stupid Title IX guidelines are met

Let's try to keep this about the ACHA side of Penn State to the NCAA! Under the NCAA DI section there's been an extensive conversation about PSU and BTHC. I agree with you it's probably not going to happen right away but eventually if there’s $$$ to be made. Doom and gloom- Some opponents of the BTHC seem to think that if the Big 10 members in the CCHA and WCHA leave for the BTHC it'll have a large financial impact on teams with smaller athletic departments b/c they won't have the revenue by playing Big 10 schools.

I started the BTHC subject on this board and a few others back in 2001. I argued all along that a BTHC couldnt dominate like all of these USCHO posters feared. Most of the fans on other sites supported the idea, just take a look at this past final. The only reason BT teams go to the final is because they have the most teams but domination isnt etched in stone until you play the game. Obviously I support a BTHC but I would also LOVE to see some other club move up outside the BT realm.

I agree, about the BTHC not dominating. If you figure the current format if MN and WIS make the WCHA finals both have a good chance of getting into the NCAA post season and if MI, MI St. or OSU are in the finals both those teams have a good chance of getting in. So any given season the Big 10 right now has a possible 4 bids. If they're all together it'd be hard for the fourth place team in a BTHC would get in.

I hope if Penn State does move into the NCAA it will make some other top ACHA schools consider working out the financial issues and Title IX issues to make the jump. Teams like Rhode Island and Navy already have the facilities.

If Penn State does move into the NCAA and the Big 10 wants to consider forming the BTHC Illinois would make a great addition.

Re: The annual Penn State to NCAA discussion

Iowa and Northwestern would also, They play each other in the club circuit each year and Iowa added another club team. Im currently looking for more support for Iowa to go D1

I could see Iowa State having a team way before Iowa and if ever. In either case both schools are deep into USHL territory and would have lots of recruiting close to home. Also great competition with UNO and other WCHA schools.

Northwestern is in the Chicago market and a little over 2 hrs from both Wisconsin (WCHA) and Notre Dame (CCHA), that would be a fun battle to see which conference gets them.

You never know Iowa has been getting increased financial support from the private sector.

Re: The annual Penn State to NCAA discussion

There is no BTHC with only 6 teams if PSU does go D1. If PSU joins, it will be atleast 3-5 years down the road, longer if any other teams were to join.

There isn't even a BTHC option for more than 10 years from now imo, and I don't think its a guarantee that the teams would even go for it.

Of course there is no guarantee because there isnt any economic feasibility. These clubs are basically operating at the moment. I'm surprised Iowa has 2 clubs but as their fan base builds like Penn State, they will have to move up to the next level. Now for some odd reason the private sector bumps up their financial support somebody or some group will look into the entire window of D1. For Iowa if I were them I would have somebody trying to fill the seats at all 3 location that they play in. Radio is cheap and many students use that median.

With all my arguments with Crazy Eddie, I knew my signature WOULD PREVAIL!!!!!!:D :D

Re: The annual Penn State to NCAA discussion

From the ACHA standpoint, it's impressive that Penn State is elevating the club programs, rather than just trashing the history the program has made in the last 20 years (in the ACHA) and longer at the non-NCAA before the ACHA. Also it sounds like they will continue the ACHA DII program.

Let's be clear on this -- the ACHA team is not being "elevated." The D-1 ACHA team will play this season and next.

The athletic department will hire a coaching staff by next spring, giving them one year to recruit for the varsity team.

What happens to the ACHA squad after 2011-12 is yet to be decided.
