Re: The 114th Congress: How Low Can They Go?

Remember, we only need to elect a horse to the Senate!

CALIGULA: I wanted the moon.
HELICON: I see. What for?
CALIGULA: Well… it’s one of the things I haven’t got.
HELICON: Right. And now everything is taken care of?
CALIGULA: No. I couldn’t get it.
HELICON: Too bad.

Re: The 114th Congress: How Low Can They Go?

Gallup tries to answer the question posed in the thread title.

Now on August recess, members of Congress returning to their districts may receive a skeptical reception from constituents, as 14% of U.S. adults approve of the job Congress is doing, down slightly from 17% in July.

...

A majority of Americans (54%) have an unfavorable opinion of Boehner, who is in his third term as speaker. Meanwhile, 23% view Boehner favorably, down slightly from 27% in March of this year and his lowest favorable rating as House speaker.

...

McConnell saw his influence on Capitol Hill expand in immeasurable ways after the 2014 midterm elections gave his caucus 54 seats, making him the Senate majority leader. But this promotion has done little to elevate his brand with the American public -- nearly twice as many see him unfavorably (41%) as favorably (22%), comparable to ratings of the past several years.

My only question is, who are those 14%? Who can possibly view this Congress positively?

Re: The 114th Congress: How Low Can They Go?

Here's a more important question to ask: Is the 86% confined to just a couple of districts so that incumbents were neither primaried nor voted out?

Usually 14% say Congress is bad, but 86% support their representatives in Congress. Blame the other guy/gal for the nation's problems has got to end. I propose complete replacement.

In my district, the incumbent hasn't won since before 2008. Granted, 2008-2010 and 2012-2014 was the same face...

I've had plenty of reps that I didn't care for. Culberson, Jackson-Lee (wouldn't take an R over her under the circumstances, but would gladly take a different D), whoever it was when I was in Bryan.

Also wasn't much of a fan of Cornyn, and let's not even discuss Cruz.

I guess I'm not in the 86%.

Preferring Jackson-Lee over anyone at all tells me you need to recalculate your coordinates.

Makes sense, though. It's the same reason people think everybody is a bad driver except them. "I hate politicians who pander; what Trump says about building that wall makes sense!"

Don't forget the senior senator from the Empire State. It must be the water.

They're both Democrats, you know. :D

Re: The 114th Congress: How Low Can They Go?

As alluded to, the 86/14 split has two sides...one understandable...the other problematic. Congress is a body that competes with your congressman's goal of extending your voice. That's easy to understand and as it should be. The problematic side is that most recognize that congress should work together to get things done at which its mediocre...and that its steeped in special interests.

She may be a terrible person, but she would also reliably vote the way I would want at a much higher rate than any GOP candidate.

Re: The 114th Congress: How Low Can They Go?

I lean right on more issues than not (although I feel the goal posts are shifting) and I've voted almost straight Dems the last four years because I'm sick and tired of the herpaderps.

With each passing election cycle (missed by three months in 2004, eligible to vote since 2006), I've started realizing that the Democrats often are the moderate right in the US these days. Not always - case in point, Sanders. But unless you're a voter dedicated to hard social conservative positions, you're shorting yourself if you vote Republican "for spending & economics".

Re: The 114th Congress: How Low Can They Go?

I was born in December 84. So I missed the 2002 midterms but voted for the first time in 2004.

Voted half-and-half D/R. In 2008 I voted mostly Rs. In 2010 it was another split year. In 2012 I voted for (IIRC) mostly Ds. In 2014 it was straight Ds.
