Wisconsin aint got nothin on Michigan.

Since embed code is being buggy.

I'm sure someone from the regressive camp will be along to tell us this is just fear mongering and that the proposed law doesn't really propose all the changes Maddow highlighted. But we will also be told that even if Maddow were right, it would be a good thing. Like child labor in Missouri.

Fortunately the "other side" never makes things up for purposes of fear. For example, the health care law really does say that government death panels will decide who lives and dies.

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

That death panel thing makes my head spin like Carrie. Sortta like a red flag and a bull. Who ever thought up that nonsense should endure one of Brent's creative rant punishments!

The truth hurts? Is it unfair that somebody said something bad about the "great swell idea"? Oh, right, its only bad to call it "death panels" because they're actually morally good... we're just too stupid to know better. So, please... tell me... why are these "NICE" boards good for us? Why is the English system good for us?

After that, I will tell you why they are morally wrong and antithetical to liberty. I believe I have the right to see whatever doctor will have me... I'm ashamed that you don't. No sympathy, no charity, no options... this is good for us? What is the worth of a 65 year old down's syndrome person? Was Palin wrong? Or did she fail some nuance test?

---

Speaking of mental twisters... if the Tea Partiers did what the union protestors are doing in Wisconsin, what would the reaction be? I'll let you take your time with that one. What if they swarmed the nation's capital? What if they swarmed a state capital? Why is it now a morally good thing to do?

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

While we're at it... on the union thing... when did the taxpayers become "the rich"?

For the record, "Death Panel" was all Palin.

In a way, it shows just how much of an evil ****ing genius she is. Either that, or the American public is so ****ed gullible that we'll believe anything crazy that comes out of a pundit's mouth. I'm not ruling out either idea.

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

Sorry it took so long to respond. I was looking for the Maddow clip of her outrage when then Gov. Granholm appointed her State Treasurer and former Dem. nominee for governor Andy Dillion as Emergency Financial Manager of the City of Pontiac. Needless to say, I didn't find it.
Detroit

To make up for a 2010 budget shortfall of $280 million, Detroit issued $250 million of 20-year municipal notes in March. The issuance followed on the heels of a warning from city officials that if its financial state didn't improve, it could be forced to declare bankruptcy. Nonetheless, demand for the bonds was high, thanks in large part to a guarantee that the state would make the payments if the city became insolvent. Michigan has already proved that it has few qualms about stepping in. In early 2009 the state took over the Detroit Public School System, which was facing a budget deficit of more than $300 million. Now a governor-appointed "emergency financial manager" oversees every penny spent.
Oh, that's good. I was wondering who would pick up the tab for 50 years of socialism in Detroit.

Dillon was appointed back in March 2009, about the same time as she appointed Bob Bobb as EFM for the Detroit Public Schools.

Graduation and Dropout Rate Data for the Detroit Public Schools
Year Graduation Rate Dropout Rate
2006 66.80 10.03
2007 58.42 29.99
2008 58.22 27.08
2009 59.65 21.20
2010 62.27 19.09

I thought I'd slip this table in for Scooby. Not sure why those don't add up to 100% , though it is from the DPS website, so .... They're proud to get the drop out rate below 20%. Oh, the DPS is broke, as is the whole City of Detroit.

How do you mock me Scooby? Hand out vouchers, rinse, repeat.? Yeah, you're right. DPS is doing fine.

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

Hamtramck is a city IN Detroit,
Hamtramck, Mi

Deficit through June 2012: $4.7 million

Budget in FY2011: $18 million

Annualized gap: 17%

City manager Bill Cooper was denied permission to declare bankruptcy. He says the city is owed millions of dollars in tax dollars from Detroit from a shared facility. The state offered the city a loan to stave off bankruptcy.

Cooper says he has already cut almost everything possible, going so far as to lay off the city's five crossing guards.

Hamtramck might avoid bankruptcy, but also-broke Michigan can't afford many of these deals. That's why Gov. Rick Snyder predicts "hundreds of jurisdictions" going bankrupt in the next four years.

When Maddow talks about privatizing the water dept,.....
Wednesday's indictment alleges former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and ex-water boss Victor Mercado conspired to steer contracts to Bobby Ferguson and held up millions of dollars in other deals after bidders refused to involve the mayor's longtime friend.

Over the last decade, suburban leaders have pushed for a larger role in the water system, which serves 4 million people in 126 communities. Double-digit increases were common while Mercado led the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department.

Warren Mayor Jim Fouts called for an outside auditor. His wish: one member each from Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.

"It's time we have the water board completely restructured. We have taxation without representation, and today is the beginning of the renewal of that effort," Fouts said.

"Not all has been done above board and fair. There's a dark cloud that hangs on the water board."

Patman has bought it hook line and sinker and he is an educated man...if he can buy it Joe Rube in Bumphuck, Alabama sure can.

DO you actually know what the proposal was? Your post is responding to somthing that clearly is not what the bill says. If you don't like ethics boards, which exsist in every reputable hospital and have since before I was a nurse (>30 yrs ago), then you might want to go somewhere like Russia to get your medical care.

For the record, "Death Panel" was all Palin.

In a way, it shows just how much of an evil ****ing genius she is. Either that, or the American public is so ****ed gullible that we'll believe anything crazy that comes out of a pundit's mouth. I'm not ruling out either idea.
See above. Americans are like sheep. They don't like to think. They pick the talking head that most mirrors their thinking, allow them to filter the info and then regurgitate it. So much easier than actually looking into things. The ignorance about what the bill actually says and the fact that people will listen to some infammatory nonsense and 'defend themselves' from being killed by a death panel' is astonishing, infuriating and frustrating. Sadly all the bill tried to do was get us reimbursement for doing what should already be happening and if the discussion wasn't happening encourage it. There are already ethics panels in every reputable hospital that review the treatment of terminally/very ill patients. These were put in place years ago, not for cost saving but to protect patients from overzealous treatment that might cause more harm that good. 30+ yrs ago in ethics class we talked about them because at the time many Drs were not able or willing to figure out how to handle about using all the new (now obsolete) technology that made it possible to keep people alive in name only. The focus was and is on humane treatment and protecting the patient from needless pain and suffering from the treatment that had little if any benefit.

Just a little factoid that might interest you Patman- The measure was initiated due to EVIDENCE BASED medicine. Patients who discuss their status/ options honestly with their medical provider and make plans LIVE LONGER and have higher satisfaction with their quality of lifethan those who do not have that discussion. This is not about cutting costs. It is about making sure the patient has the knowledge to make decisions about their life instead of having some person decide to go to the wall with very little if any benefit to the patient and a lot more suffering. Options and their corresponding liklihood of success are discussed. The patient has the final say (except when the insurance company refuses to pay). The measure rewarded the medical provider for having this discussion. It was also felt that having measures requiring the patient be informed might encourage those in the field who have a difficult time approaching it to do so.

The dicotomy here is that everyone wants to save money yet no one will address the insurance companies/health care systems collective refusal to cover anything that is not hospital based. Home based stuff is so much more effective at helping people live longer. It is also significantly cheaper than hospital care. Why is no one going nuts on that? Because it might attack those cash cows that fund all the political campaigns.

Speaking of mental twisters... if the Tea Partiers did what the union protestors are doing in Wisconsin, what would the reaction be?

As to the first part, sure you do. But I don't think you have the right for the government to pay for your extraordinary measures. I'm for single-payer only so far as it covers a minimum, basic level of care. If you're 85 and want lung, pancreas, and liver transplants to live another 3 years instead of 6 months, then you should be free to do so. I just don't think Medicare should be paying for it.

As to your second proposition, it depends. If they would spell their signs correctly and wouldn't bring hunting rifles with them, then the reaction would probably be about the same as it is in Wisconsin. As it is, the tea party deserves every bit of ridicule that comes their way.

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

While we're at it... on the union thing... when did the taxpayers become "the rich"?

When the GOP started utilizing the line that 20% of the people pay 80% of the taxes in their divide and conquer scheme. They made that bed, now they get to lay in it.

BINGO!!!! We have a Death Panel!

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

No, we have a payment board. no one forces them to die. They just say the government won't pay for it. Which is just like it is now, except the insurance companies make that decision instead of a government entity. Or are you saying the insurance companies have death panels, too?

At least when the gov't makes the decision, you have due process rights to fight it in court. Good luck doing the same thing with Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

Re: The 112th Congress - The first Orange-American to be elected Speaker

a Payment board? Do you mean the Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research?

Thank goodness. It would be a first if they actually had to lie in something they wrought.

Way to ignore the real issue.

Again, do you believe what insurance companies do now is a death panel? Or not?

I do.

And if I had to pick the insurance company or the United States Government................aaaah, just pull the ****ing plug. :p
