Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

The GOP would find 1 trillion in Medicare and 1 trillion in Social Security. Problem solved.

That would have to make it passed the Dems, who now have loads of incentives not to deal. Medicare gets cut either way, and if they hold out, defense gets cut instead of social security and the tax cuts expire as they should.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Please correct me if I'm wrong, as I haven't seen anything which clarifies the "baseline" standard the bill sets:

But from what I've seen, the baseline is based upon law as it currently stands, which means the baseline anticipates the Bush tax cuts expiring in 2013 and the AMT fix not being renewed annually as it has been.

In essence, then, isn't that a tax hike (albeit one that is acceptable to Norquist) that's now built into the system? And doesn't that require the GOP, if it insists upon maintaining the Bush tax cuts, to find $2 trillion or so elsewhere to offset that?

Correct. Rush is having a fit over that today.

You assume that the Dems have learned that lesson, I'm not convinced that they have that capacity.

Given the potential dire consequences of not acting in this case, I think that the current deal isn't as terrible for the Dems as it could have been. I hope that they learn the lesson moving forward and are willing to hold firm in the future.

I'd have to check with Priceless, but I'm pretty sure the correct talking point is "let the tax cuts expire LIKE THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO."

Ok then. Obama needs shut the hell up until this passes, then point this out as loud and clear as he can as he signs it. The deal isn't as bad as it could've been, since they get the tax hike that they wanted as teh default.

Edit: Crap, he's already announced he'll veto any bill to extend the bush tax cuts. Doesn't he know that he's just egging the GOP on to default by saying that?

Well we all know he is a man of his word ;) :p

Of course if I trusted him I would say that he is actually trying to get them to nix the deal and default. It is worth its weight in gold in the coming election if a deal is struck and because of the Bush Tax Cuts the GOP walked away and let us default. (lets leave out how it would screw everyone for now...im talking politically here)

We all know he will buckle under when he is challenged on the Tax Cuts later on under this deal anyways.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

The house passed the debt ceiling bill, and Giffords came for her first vote since being shot.

That's fantastic! Who would have thought that she'd be back to work this early after being SHOT IN THE HEAD.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Misnaming titles of bill strikes again!
Not really. They proved once again to be dumber than dog s%^t.

Thought -- isn't that No Child Left Behind?? If so, could it be "No Congressman left unelected"??

Thought #2, not one Senator up for reelection in 2012 is going to be on that debt committee.

I'm debating whether this is a good thing or bad thing. Mostly good I'm thinking. Because none of the people up for election are going to have the balls to make a tough decision. Fill it with 2012ers and you'll wind up with a bunch of eunuchs.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

The House portion of that panel will be up for re-election unless they pick people planning to retire, so the choices there would be spineless or out of touch. :D

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

I think they had to throw it on the education bill to get around their rule of posting it online for 3 days before voting on it. So they had to toss it on as an amendment to something they were already supposed to vote on.

Man, that's just... pathetic. (Is this the biggest earmark in history?)
