Tales from yesteryear - Hockey's Golden Years (or at least my college years)

norm1909

Larry Normandin
It seems some, besides myself, have enjoyed the historical reading articles, I linked to, so without more ado and not to overly hijack other threads, here are some more.

I've posted articles relating to players who post to this forum (bakdraft21 - aka Peter Wasserman and Greatlaker11 - aka Brian Statfeld) so they can add some color.

If anyone else from any team or era would like to be step up and suggest potential articles, just make the suggestion and I'll see what I can find.

Previously posted on the Oswego thread....

NOOOOO,I played 1 yr at Elmira 83-84 then 3 at Oswego, defense,my partners were Brett Stuart and Tommy Mcfall...and those where some pretty crazy yrs at Romney, not to mention cold,we also played our 1986-87 season at the rink downtown, think it was Cristofoli,it had wire,no plexiglass,it was the 1st time we ever made it to the Final4 and the Championship game......insert Plattsburgh wise *** comment here:D...goalies my senior yr were Mueller and Kelly

#5

The 1984-85 edition of the Oswego State Great Lakers varsity
hockey team will take to the ice twice this week.

Nice job Norm,#5 in your program#1 in your heart:D..Called my parents at 3 am when we got back from Hamilton ,they thought I had got arrested when the phone rang..Notice who the goal was scored on.....Guy hebert, who went on to play on the USA Olympic team and many yrs in the NHL we peppered him with many shots that games and he was a stone wall,my friend on hamilton scored the tying goal harry mcabe as well...........p.s.it was a seeing eye shot from the point that barely made it over the goaline....ps Thanks Norm never saw that article, printed it and added to scrapbook,I owe ya a beer or pretzel:p

You're welcome. ;)

Prefer to play forward

I think I remember who you are. Pete Wasserman, right. You played with McFall and Mueller. I was thinking of Jim Kelly, not Pat Kelly at goalie. Jim played long before you were there.
You still in NY?

Pete who?

Peter Wasserman got his first collegiate goal at 8:11 unassisted.

Great links Norm..Thanks funny stuff when you read it now....18-2 we beat Hobart, and I think we beat Cortland in my time 20-1....NO CLASS:p

You were a standout defensemen.

Who did got off at least one shot. ;)

Ok the suspense is only killing me so I'm listed as scoring the 18th goal in that Fulton article regarding the Hobart win.

#11 (aka #21) (1984-88) is from Massapequa, NY

I'm only a legend in my own mind. I enjoy all the info you and everyone else posts here. It's by far the best board with the most intelligent hockey people out there.

You have been known to get things started.

LakerEagleLover, I may work for the NSA so the need for the top secrecy. LOL. Norm1909, its a good thing I have no ego. Lost it years ago. I see Mike Catuosco twice a week as we coach separate age groups for the same youth hockey organization. Also run into Matt Dickson, another LIer. Emailed Catuosco today as well, and lived with #12 Joe Albano my senior year, his junior year on Bridge Street with a few other non hockey players. We actually played on a line together for a long stint. Played in whats listed as 99 games during 84-88. Funny, no shortage of Oswego Minor Hockey people remembered me this year and last during my visit there for a youth hockey tournament. Pat Kelly was a Long Islander from that generation and there were a few others who came for one year. Anyway, back to being stealth and incognito.

I seen - :p

Contratulations :o :p

Rumors, rumors, rumors

Lakers win critical game against Union 5-4

an aggressive forward from Long Island, played Junior B with the Green Machine last year

S and O luxury bus

Lakers scored two third period goals to drop Geneseo 5-4

Ok Norm ya beat us to it,Ill have to have my daughter read a few of these, those were fun days with great guys,we had great fans and the students were crazy in the Zoo as well, not to mention the coaches that put up with our shennanagins. The town folks were always at the games, and that was a cccold Golden Romney fieldhouse, not to mention we had some nice crowds on the road..Ow also gotta mention the fact that we the players used to go tom the rink and water down the cement/ice to get ready for the season, there was a beer or 2 mixed in from what I can tell as well:eek:

It will be exciting for Cardinal fans to see some of the 1986-1987 championship team present at Friday night's hockey game. Got out my old book to see who might be here. Yeo have to have been around awhile, like me, to remember those winning days. They were something! Some of the Oswego former players will remember it well.

That they might.

I remember it well.

Re: Tales from yesteryear - Hockey's Golden Years (or at least my college years)

I live right by Jim Tyo who played at Oswego, he told me he had an alumni newsletter which had an article about bakdraft being in the FD

That was before common core when student athletes could handle playing that many games.
Then the NCAA started drinking NESCACfe coffee and it went downhill from there?
