Syracuse Season 2

Re: Syracuse Season 2

.605 overall halfway thru your 2nd season of D-I is pretty **** good...so far, looking like a pretty quick move to being competitive every game for Syracuse.

Back in my younger days used to be a big Orange Hoops fan. (Local Cable TV in our town was infested with the ABC-CBS-NBC stations from Syracuse). Come to think of it they still have the same coach after all these years........

Agree that the Orange Ladies are doing real well for a second year program. I can see this team tinkering with a top 10 ranking if not next year surely the year after. (Next year might be tough with the big guns returning from the Olympics).

I know I'm dating myself but I can actually remember seeing Jim Boeheim PLAY for Syracuse, along with Dave Bing, in Manley Field House. They often would run exhibition mile relays, or some other type of race, on the board track that circled the court. What a blast that used to be.

I'm not getting the votes for BU over Syracuse that some voters are making. Syracuse got off to a slow start at 0-4-1 (all on the road -- the first 8 and 11 of their first 13 were on the road, a start that would destroy a lot of young teams.) However, they've gone 11-3 since. Contrast that with BU, who was 3-1-4 in October, and has played at a 6-5-3 clip thereafter. Syracuse has made their run against mostly weak to average teams, but BU doesn't have a lot of quality wins either. Against common opponents, and they have a few, BU is 6-5-3, Syracuse is 6-3-1, unless I can't add, which is always a possibility. I think this is a case where USA Today did a better job than USCHO in the voting this week.

You ran the Mile on the boards ?. Was in track myself, an LD type. Followed the Orange for most of the eighties with Washington, Seikaly, Coleman and Douglas being the most notable stars. The last minute loss to Knights hoosiers still hurts. I can see one of the current SU Women Hockey players being a NCAA star once she is done in a few years.

Ah, wooden tracks...I hated the things. We had one at my high school, outside, that we ran on in the winter. Had to shovel it off, of course, and it was so small you would get dizzy running anything longer than a 220!

Never actually ran the mile there myself but I did run on a number of mile relay teams that competed several times at half times of SU games. One in particular where there were so many people around the track that you could hardly run much at all in the inside lane. And, LOUD, LOUD, LOUD. Great stuff. As for the dome, I've seen a ton of great games there. So many great memories.

That must be the track to fridge in the shed and back to get the beer and/or the Whoopie Pie ?. :p

BTW..Trivia...Who is known as the king of the boards ?
(P.S...If you don't know the answer, chances are you were not in the sport)

Great question. Can I get a multiple choice? I can think of a lot of guys who excelled on the boards but I'll take a shot at Marty Liquori.

Eammon Coghlan ... Chairman of the boards. This was just after I stopped running.

I attended the Milrose games as a spectator a few times during my HS track career.

Yeah, hadn't thought of Coghlan in a long time but he was definitely hard to beat on the boards. When I was in college, we ran a lot of indoor meets but never on the boards. All synthetic. Our field house, where we worked out, had a banked dirt track. I'm sure there are some of my HS contemporaries though who are still picking slivers out of their bodies after taking a hard spill on the boards. Of all the running I did, and I did a lot, from sprints to marathons, half mile state champion, the most intense was on the boards at SU. Even more fun than the NYC marathon.

You got it....Coglan it is. The only person EVER to run a Sub 4 mile as a 40+ year old. Not even the famous Johnny Walker could manage that one...

Did not run on the boards a lot. Too hard on the legs, and my specialties (Mile and Up) were more taylored for the outdoors.

Grew up idolizing runners like Bikila, Viren, Keino, Szewinska, Waitz etc.

Probably the only link between my track days and my daughter's hockey days is her poster of Steve Prefontaine, certainly one of my favorites, which says,"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift."
This all would be a great subject over a few beers, as all runners at some point had to use that magical elixir to recuperate, but, back to hockey. Looking forward to seeing SU in the future.

I ran the boards at Madison Square Garden a couple of times and at the Armory in the Bronx. Got taken out there once and ended up with a bunch of splinters in my thigh. That was a flat track, no banking. Really didn't care for the boards.

Dave Woddle was my favorite. That's why I ran the 1/2 mile. Never liked anything longer.

OK, done with track. Let's see what Syracuse can do in the 2nd part of the season!

Re: Syracuse Season 2

Ok... 2/3 of the way through their second season and 5 games above .500.
The season to this point could have even been better without the 2 losses to Colgate (Colgate is better than their record shows just ask Niagara) and splits with both Niagara and Wayne State all of whom will be battling for second in the CHA and the right to face Mercy the nations best team.
Notable wins against Cornell,Princeton(2),Providence,RPI(2)...one goal losses to NewHampshire,Minnesota,UConn,
Now comes the critical part of the season with 10 of the 12 games remaining
against the CHA.. 4 of those against Mercyhurst...ouch! 2 against Quinny who have one of the best goalies in the NCAA. Just ask Harvard.

They (Syracuse) have to be one of the surprises this year in D1 being ranked
as high as 10th at one point.
Regardless of what happens from here on in the ladies have done a great job.

A prediction of an 18-15-1 season to double last years win total.;)

It'll be interesting to see if they can poach a win from Mercyhurst. I'm guessing they do and somehow manage 20 wins. :D

Re: Syracuse Season 2

Quite an eventful weekend for the Ladies this weekend in Detroit. First of all a great turnout for game 1. The Warriors fans were out in full colors supporting their team. Nice to see.
Game 1 started with 2 of the Syracuse ladies buckled over in pain and did not dress with 1 more down with the same symptoms by the end of the first. Those 3 were admitted to hospital and the team hung on on for 2-0 win. Later in the evening 2 more were admitted with the same issues and and a sixth by the morning leaving the team down those six for game 2. Being badly out-shot by the third and down 2-0 the ladies rallied and were able to come back and win scoring with 50 sec remaining 3-2. This shows great character and depth that has been displayed all season by the Orange. (It seems the ladies were stricken with food poisoning and all have now since recovered.) Great job ladies on the sweep.
Final 6 games of the year should be interesting as all are CHA games and will determine who will end up second although with Niagara stealing one from Mercy this weekend it makes it more interesting and does not guarantee anything for the Lakers. Niagara has tied and beat the Lakers this year and the second game in Syracuse last week could have went either way.

Go Cuse
