Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I
...as long as Russell is the coach, we're going to be getting 1/3 to half of our players from BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Chris Tok and Pat Mikesch will mostly be in charge of recruiting from the USHL and Michigan...
Someone else mentioned the way you get kids interested is to establish relationships with teams / leagues. Well that is what Tech is doing in Western Canada. They keep going back to the same area because that's their best chance to land some talent. If they just spread themselves all over every league, they just end up doing a poor job everywhere.
Another big problem is that winning breeds winning. How do you lure top talent when you're at the bottom of the league and how do you get off the bottom of the league without talent? You really need one awesome recruiting class that you can build from and use as an example for future years. Also keep in mind the facilities and other key factors - location, student body make-up and academic standards. With the DECC going away, Tech now has by far and away one of the oldest buildings in all of college hockey. Granted, Tech has made HUGE strides to fix up the JMSIA, but when compared to the Ralph, Kohl and whatever tUMD and the Beavers will call their barns you have to know that influences recruits too. And oh by the way, just because you want to play hockey and love Tech doesn't mean you're getting in. You have to have some brains as well which isn't always a given for kids who focus more time on hockey than they do on their studies.
In the times that I have emailed or spoken with Jamie in person, I can tell you he cares way more about this program than any coach I've met in person going all the way back to Bob Mancinni in the early 90's. An alumnus, a former player, you don't think he wants this program to be better than it is? Of course he does. More positive things have happened for Tech hockey under his watch than the last three coaches combined (and I'm not just talking wins and losses). The trip overseas is another example. The team already stated that they want to do it again in four years when they are eligible to do so and that's a carrot they can dangle to recruits. Something that other schools won't offer them.
Tech needs to find more things like this that make them unique and stand out from the other schools, other wise more of the last two years will continue to be the norm rather than the exception. Everyone can do their part to help build the team - donations, cheering, positive messages, making players feel welcome on campus and around town. It's not just the players on the ice that make a winning program happen.
Don Cherry as an assistant coach woudn't hurt either.
