Re: Sunyac 2011-2012 thoughts comments....

Did he choose Platty over Western or is he not going to Western for other reasons?

From what I've read and been told its more due to playing time. There were only 2 full time forwards graduating Western and 3-4 freshman forwards coming in. Gidaro wanted to play right away and wasn't sure if he would crack the line up on a regular basis his freshman year.

Re: Sunyac 2011-2012 thoughts comments....

Yes it would be. He was suppose to be going to DI Western Michigan.....but chose Plattsburgh State.....

highlight film... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3a0GPoic4w was a penalty killer specialist, several SH goals...per game sometimes...

Makes no sense. No one foregoes a chance at D 1 for D 3. Like playing for the Staten Island Yankees instead of the New York Yankees. He didn't spend 3 years in junior after High School to choose D3.

Obviously you don't know too many kids in DIII then.....many of your top DIII guys were going DI but chose DIII because they would be pine riders at the big DI schools for a couple years and wanted to play now. It's not that hard of a concept. Several kids play 2-3 years in juniors after HS and play DIII...do some research...

Re: Sunyac 2011-2012 thoughts comments....

watched the highlights, he has nice hands, a bunch of ez goals and didnt see anybody laying the body either......looks to be cocky for sure but that can be a good thing at times, wonder how he will get along with the boss:eek:, not springsteen either...... as far as not going D1 I believe we have gone over this many times...playing time, friends , personalities, girlfriends, nice uniforms lol.......etc etc...but not scoreboards :D

Number of issues:
(a) Money. Maybe WMU did not fork over a scholly and the cost of attendance was cheaper at PSU.
(b) Shot at a national title. PSU has a shot. WMU may.
(c) Eddication. Maybe WMU did not have his major.
(d) Plattsburgh > Kalamazoo

Except for a very small group, most players end up in 10:30 men's league. So why not Division III???

As was said on one of WMU sites, they only lost a couple forwards this year and had some decent recruits coming in that would beat him out for playing time so he would have to wait at least a year to see some ice time. You normally see a few late additions when DI schools finalize scholarship awards and those who "thought" they were going to a DI school all of a sudden get told you may not play now because so-and-so signed with us now.

I even heard that on occasion, some players even transfer from DI to DIII schools!!

What are you guys smoking up there. HaHa. T:eek:hey play in Juniors until they are 21 so they can play D 3. Why not play club there is an even better chance you'll play down there. Given the choice these kids are going D 1 even if it's low level D 1. That's what they've played for since they were little.

I could see a D 3 coach putting out this kind of mullarkey but not someone thinking clearly. I invite any player to write in here and say if he had a D 1 option that he would forego it and go D 3.

Really? That’s why a lot of DI school have 24 and 25 year old Juniors and Seniors too?? I guess they planned on playing DIII but said what the heck and went DI right? Why not play club? Because club hockey gets little to no respect (no offense Nate). You really need to pay more attention. There have been several players who had DI options and went DIII. You are right, most have "played for" the chance to play division I, but when it comes time to decide, its sit the bench or play immediately...how hard is that to understand? Some guys want the chance to play for a National Title not be a 4th line DI player on a cellar dweller DI school…or see 2 to 3 games a season...I know for a fact there was a Plattsburgh player who was recruited by RIT, but chose Plattsburgh. Gidaro was listed on the WMU recruits list and was watched on the WMU recruit page the entire season. You really are clueless.....

as a former player I can only say that I had a chance to go play D1, BUT and its a BIG BUT, I had to " make the team"....I choose a very good air tight other D3 option........the D1 team won the National Championship a few yrs later, not sure if I would have made the team...injuries also have a lot to do with things as well, as It did with me...........and a few others I know of personally........

Oh come on, thats when they were still playing outside using chicken wire for class and each team had to alternate periods cleaning the ice with snow shovels and a hose pumped from the local pond :) JK

Injuries, finacial and academics play a huge role as well. But there have been several kids who have gone on to be good DIII players who were originally looked at by DI schools but were given just that option...make the team, continue to make the team, be happy playing 3-5 games a season for a couple years and maybe by your senior year you can be a regular fixture in the lineup....or....go play DIII, play all the time for a great DIII team and get noticed. Obviously its too hard of a concept for some people to grasp....

Actually, this happens a lot in all collegiate sports. Most kids realize they are not going to the pros, and want to maximize their college experience.

Since you invited, I had the opportunity to go to and potentially play for 3 division 1 schools. All were willing to offer partial scholarships with the caveat that if I were to crack the line-up I could earn a full scholarship and if I could not, I would be on the hook for full tuition.

The d3 coaches who recruited me offered no illusions of grandeur, but they did offer that someone with my skill level could play and contribute as a freshman, and to decent size crowds.

I chose d3 because it fitted my desire to play and contribute as a freshman. I did not want to sit on the bench and watch others play. After college I played minor league hockey with many of those d1 kids that chose the other route I was offered and not one of them was satisfied with the amount of ice time they received over their careers or felt like they were a big part of their programs success.

So, with that said, I will agree with you that my initial goal was not d3, but it was certainly the better option.

Okay this NHL preseason stuff is not doing it for me right now. I need a LIVE hockey game already... As far as SUNYAC goes this season. I have only 2 predictions.

1. Plattsburgh will finish higher than 4th in the regular season.
2. Oswego will bring in a D1 transfer in the second semester. :p
