Stuxnet

Re: Stuxnet

8200 is SIGINT, I didn't know they did this sort of development. Mossad tends to leave, um, calling cards.

My understanding, since they are part of IDF, is that Unit 8200 does have a deeper capability than just reading electronic communications. Sort of like an NSA on steroids. But most of what I've read of them is from "anonymous" sources, so who knows? One of the guys here, who spent time with "The Dept. of Agriculture" ;) before he moved into the private sector thinks Stuxnet may be more of an elaborate decoy to test Iran's ability to counter possible cyber attacks. And he's not really convinced it's the Israelis who set it up.

Re: Stuxnet

This has Mossad written all over it.. fascinating stuff, though.

I'm starting to like the "chinese" theory... it also attacked India and Indonesia... though they could also be collateral damage from nations using the same equipment.

I would also think, that while China likes the idea of having the US's hands all tied up... I'm not sure if they'd like a geo-politically surging Iran. China would also be affected by oil prices and I wouldn't be surprised if they wouldn't be so comfortable with another group in their extended back yard.

Still, its interesting... everybody, except maybe Russia or Japan, would have a reason to put something like this through.

I'm still sticking with the US or Israel. The reason I'm hearing the countries you mentioned saw a much higher infection rate is that they had a lot of the projects with the firm that built the Iranian nuclear facility.

From a strict geopolitical POV, Russia would have a dog in the fight, too. They've been frenemies with Iran off and on for decades and have had aspirations of either influencing them or disabling them since the days of Scythia and Parthia.

Maybe it's SPECTRE or the Dictatorship of the Air -- a privately funded group for good or evil. ;)

The Beeb had a story this morning saying one curious thing is that Bashir would not be as militarily significant a target as Natanz. Bashir is just a power plant. Natanz and Qum are where they actually enrich the uranium, and where the skulduggery could take place.

Didn't Russia give Iran the nuclear material in the first place?

Re: Stuxnet

Apparently Microsoft and Symantec released papers in the past few days at VB2010 but they are only posting abstracts right now...

In related news, Elinor Mills appears to have been engineered to make every geek on Earth horny.

Re: Stuxnet

I saw an article the other day (can't find it now....:() which indicated that Stuxnet was a joint US-Israeli government project. The author was critical of the US for admitting it; since it now opens us to retaliation.

This frustration was expressed in the context of the current administration doing too many "look at me" antics celebrating "victories" best kept quiet (disclosing intelligence used to find Osama, now the DNA collection project inside Pakistan is shut down because the doctor's cover was blown; disclosing that a double-agent provided intelligence for the Yemeni drone strike, making further discoveries impossible; and now this one).
