Stupid Computer Question 3.14

Re: Stupid Computer Question 3.14

I got an Acer - 15.6" display, 250 gb HD, 3 gb RAM - for $450.

Netbooks are crap - they're the computer form of foopers - too *'ing small. Plus I don't think they come with a DVD drive.

Re: Stupid Computer Question 3.14

If you are going to buy Dell, I have a coupon for 20% off that I just got in email.

Yeah, that reminds me: if you're going to buy online always Google for the mfg or retailer + coupon codes (example: 'Asus coupon codes'). And see what comes up. Most of the codes are expired or don't work but sometimes you can hit on a decent discount or free shipping.

Re: Stupid Computer Question 3.14

The Dell Studio I am using I got at Best Buy, it is everything I need and more (it is way more than you need Brent overall since I do some mid to high end stuff on it) and I got it for around 800. I have never had an issue with it, minus the usual stuff that Vista brings. Hell even the battery life is within about 90% of where it was when I got it!

Re: Stupid Computer Question 3.14

The real problem with netbooks isn't the screen size, it's that their keyboards are the size of a postage stamp.

Good point. I don't know how to type "correctly", so I manage OK. People who have actual keyboard skills cannot get comfortable on the netbook.

Re: Stupid Computer Question 3.14

Do new laptops now support 720/1080p display like the new regular monitors do?

I think pretty much all laptops now have sufficient resolution for 720p, but only a couple of the top-end models have the resolution necessary to do full 1080p. But on a screen that size, you won't be able to see the difference when watching videos.

EDIT: Also, www.slickdeals.net is a good place to look. Go to forums-> hot deals, and then scroll to the bottom and click the icon for "systems" and it'll just list the threads on laptops/desktops.

Apple is easy and fun to use and a total piece of crap. My motherboard died within the first year. Need a warranty after the first year? When you live on borrowed time? Yeah, its $250 a year.

Re: Stupid Computer Question 3.14

We're talking about Brent here... :p Besides, doesn't he have skinny little fingers like those chicken legs of his? :D (j/k Brent...)

I can't type on a normal laptop, so forget about a mini-keyboard. :o

After the input in here, and talking with some computer-types at work, I ended up getting an Asus with 4GB, 15" screen, and it's fast. It ran $650.

The first guy I talked to was from the Geek Squad, and he got half the stuff wrong about the computer's specs (I had written key ones down from the online description). The actual Best Buy guy came over and corrected him, after overhearing our convo.

Also picked up a 500GB portable external drive for backup/transfer of my files.

Finally, got 18months no interest financing. I could pay it off now, but I'd rather build the credit, etc.

Sidenote: when the Best Buy guy (who kinda looked like Yager, and seemed to have a similar personality) saw I was looking at an Asus, he just about wet himself, I swear.

My mom bought an ASUS around christmas and, so far, has enjoyed it. Granted, shes a minimal user (basic internet, record keeping, etc), but it seemed like a good machine when I picked it out for her.
