Still Peferable To Getting Maced...St. Lawrence @ Michigan Tech, Jan. 14/15, 2011

Re: Still Peferable To Getting Maced...St. Lawrence @ Michigan Tech, Jan. 14/15, 2011

Funny, when I first brought my girl friend into MacInnes, the first thing she said was that it had al the makings of a perfect comeback movie.
Too bad it may be a slasher movie instead of a comeback movie.

Will St Lawrence roll 4 lines and three defensive sets or will they dress 7 or maybe even 8 defensemen, and only have three lines? Typically Tech will run 4 lines and 6 defensemen.

You can expect SLU to go with 4 forward lines and 3 defensive pairings, too. I'm guessing that at least two of the defenseman will change out between Friday and Saturday (Baker, Hughes, and Child will probably play both games - after that it may be some combination of P. Raley, M. Raley, Austin, Dewey, Dyer, and Torney). You may see 3 or 4 of the forward spots change up, too. But it will almost certainly be 4 and 3 both games.

Was really considering coming out for this series, but I'll be doing enough driving this spring as it is, and flying through Chitown didn't look to appealing to me based on delays and whatnot.

SLU is typically a fun team to watch, plays wide open and full throttle. Like Tim said, Greg Carey is going to be something special, and could be argued that he already is special. He has a legitimate NHL shot and his stats back that up. He loves getting the shot off a 1-timer from the low circle to the goalie's left, and has potted some beautiful goals from that area. Kyle Flanagan is a great playmaker, and has helped Carey get the puck in scoring areas. Another freshman that I've found a liking for his play is Wick (#19), a forward who will hit anybody who has the puck, and (most of the time, and could be argued all of the time) hits very clean and very hard. I've felt that the refs have penalized him a couple times simply based on the noise created by the boards as opposed to the actual hit, but so be it.

I do like the fact that Tech plays the lock, as SLU gets to travel to Brown next weekend and will likely see more of that. Does Tech have any live video feeds or such?

Tech has 7 or 8 freshmen starting. Most of them are pretty good size.(like 6 ft, 190 on average, but several a lot bigger) They can skate and shoot, but they are still freshmen. Western refs are typically more forgiving of physical play than the wusses who ref the eastern games. However, they are not patient with checking from behind at all. Tech is competitive, but finds ways of turning over the puck in the defensive zone. They are typically outshot by quite a margin and the goalies are pretty good overall coping with it. A lot of the shots are from the point.
There is a video link for a web cast on the mtu.edu web site under athletics. It's 10 dollars but if you go full screen the quality is terrible. If you are willing to live with the small screen view its acceptable. There are no commentators or audio at all and the feed is delayed a few seconds from live.
There are times Tech will play the torpedo but mostly it's the trap. Tech's best player by far is iffy for this game and has missed the last two months.
I don't think there will be any delays getting to Houghton this weekend thru ORD, but it will be snowing up there. You can always fly to marquette as well which is what I usually do.

Good luck to the Saints tonight. I hope you play hard, have fun and lose two lopsided games.

Well, I say, bad luck to the Huskies--hope you play easy, have no fun, and win . . . wait a sec--this isn't working out the way I planned . . . have to re-think this. Be right back.

As a Tech fan, I have to say that it sounded like the refs were a little kind to us tonight. Our powerplay time was the difference between a tie and a record-setting loss, while Weninger was the difference between a tie and an SLU loss. He had at least three big saves in the 3rd and OT period. Despite giving up 4, including one from a bad angle, he finished with 39 saves.

Not really a bad angle. More like a shot from the corner that he ended up kicking into his own net unknowingly. I will give him credit, he settled down and did not let it snowball, despite our best effort not to let him forget it. The glove save in overtime was key for him, as I was thinking we might have the winner.

It was not a great game for either team tonight, and neither team is good enough to win on talent alone. A tie was just about right for the way the teams played tonight.

I have never, in my long, long life seen the Mac as empty of spectators as it was tonight. Jeffers HS gets more fans than that.
So who won the Calumet game?

Attendance reported as 2,011. Based on what people have been saying, I bet it was a lot lower.

yeah, the Mac was....EMPTY......tomorrow will probably be slightly better because it's "youth hockey night" or w/e.....but...tonight....attendance was quite atrocious ....(what else is new)

Re: Still Peferable To Getting Maced...St. Lawrence @ Michigan Tech, Jan. 14/15, 2011

aw. I like those "dead of winter" games with the arena empty and it snowing real hard out. Randy's for postgame. I miss that.

Re: Still Peferable To Getting Maced...St. Lawrence @ Michigan Tech, Jan. 14/15, 2011

I estimated that maybe 1,000 people were there at faceoff each night. There were quite a few late people on Friday, it seemed. The attendance did not bump up much on Saturday after faceoff. I would say that 1,500 would be generous. It would have been even lower if not for the little kids.

You would have thought that we were still in the middle of winter break or something. Perhaps someone should have told the hockey team that Saturday's game started at 5:05? It seems to me that they could have thought it was at 7.

Dead quiet atmosphere almost the entire weekend. Saturday, you had to go around randomly poking people to make sure they still had a pulse. I think a few people had to be woken up by ushers at the end of the game and told it was time to go home.
