Still Peferable To Getting Maced...St. Lawrence @ Michigan Tech, Jan. 14/15, 2011

Probably the biggest question for Tech - do we get Brett Olson back this week?

Saints fans, tell us about your team. What style do they play? I guess we might as well talk hockey and pretend that the Huskies care enough to make this a competitive series.

SLU is up-tempo, all the time. They're pretty fast, not particulary big (except for Vangog, whom you may or may not see). Good PK, not so good PP. If it's a big ice surface, they should have a good transition game. The defense will jump into the play when they get the chance. But they're also very young, and they have a tough time putting together a full 60 minutes without making some costly mistakes on defense.

Watch out for Carey. He's going to be a big-time scorer. Other players to watch are Hughes and Baker (good defensemen), Kyle Flanagan (very creative, excellent passer), Bogosian (strong and very fast), and Essery (small guy, high energy, can be a real pest on PK). Not sure who you'll see in goal. The freshman Weninger has been sharp, but it's a non-league series and they may want to get some time for Moss and/or Spadaccini.

Bottom line: it will probably be lots of fun to watch, and you will get your chances to score.

Tech plays the lock so it's games tend to be pretty ugly with a lot of neutral zone action and every so often someone catches a turnover and get's an odd man rush. Tech is very big and somewhat physical, but not quick to loose pucks, and not as physical as say UND at all. The pp is well above average, and the pk is average. Tech skates only two (I think) seniors so they are fairly young as well. We occasionally pressure the puck but generally not. Our offense is balanced but Players to watch are Olson, ( if he is healthy, since he has been out for a couple of months,) Furne, and Gordic on offense and Cousins and Sova on defense. We have had quite a few injuries so several of our defensemen now play forward.
The rink is a standard nhl rink, but the benches are not next to each other, rather they are on opposite sides. The attendance will be minimal due to the losing streak unfortunately.

Obviously not a Saints fan, but watch out for SLU's fore-check and back-check, as it is one of their biggest competitive advantages in our league. Expect a lot of rough play as well. This team is extremely well coached.

I've been maced, and I beg to differ.

Well, like I said, at least a few of those turnovers should be there for you. The bad news for Tech is that it's not easy to beat SLU to loose pucks, even if you're good at it. They can be beat, but you'll have to earn it. You'd better be very good at that lock, because if these guys get the puck behind you they will chase it down and they will send it toward your net. Like FD08 said, they don't let their size stop them from throwing their weight (such as it is) around to free it up. Other than Carey, there aren't a lot of snipers, but there are plenty of shooters.

The good news for St. Lawrence is that Tech isn't good at anything except for taking stupid penalties, and they've even sucked at that recently.

How else will their band practice their famous ditty? :D

Another reason to avoid going to Houghton for games. The band and that godawful song.

Their band seems like a bunch of cool people. I will agree, though, when I was at the GLI in 2009, that although the first couple times I had to hear the ditty just to believe it for myself, it did get a little annoying after that.

Sounds like it will be a good game. Tech has plenty of problems, especially in their own zone, but being beat physically is not one of them. If SLU throws their wt around, or rather, tries to throw their wt around, they will get nothing but bruises for it.

The last time a smaller faster team came to Houghton, CC skated circles around us. I will be very interested to see the level of EFFORT on the part of the Huskies.

Kyle Flannigan was fun to watch in Mankato... Not from an MSU fan's perspective as the two ties don't do anything for MSU.

re: money for pro players. ever notice how the year after the big contract signing is usually a bad one for pros?

I have utterly and completely given up on what is wrong with our team. I have no idea. but I know its a lot easier for us fans than it is for the team, their families, the coaches (and their families) and the support staff.

little bit of me likes the suffering of the last thirty years (for me its only been 15 so I'm a newbie). it will make the good times so much better. when they come. if they come.

Funny, when I first brought my girl friend into MacInnes, the first thing she said was that it had al the makings of a perfect comeback movie.
