Still Complaining About ESPN...

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

Ala carte cable only works if it's cheaper and I still get high speed internet for cheap.

If internet is unbundled due to ala carte cable, the bill could be higher. Even if you only want 5 channels.

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

I have to agree with clown with his point.

SVP correctly stared the essay with the thought that not everyone watches sports.

And then rips on the people who don't watch sports because they think Odom is a reality TV star instead of an NBA star.

Seems to me a cry out for more ESPN attention. As if they are the rock of society, when, in fact, they are no more (or less) than Entertainment Tonight. The E in ESPN should remind him of their actual place in society, which is equal to all other entertainment outlets. The fact that so many see Odom as a reality TV show should be a wake up call to the NBA that a large portion of the country do not even know they exist. Which, to them, should be a problem. But in the scheme of things, is just fine.

That's the risk entertainers take when they cross over venues. They are remembered/recalled in a way that isn't what they want. Tough. You get paid millions to do that, the rest of us just loan you our attention.

Possibly not. I have the most basic of cable (networks, news channels, and those music channels), and my internet price didn't change. The a la carte channels COULD be expensive enough to warrant getting full cable, though, because of value.

As it is, it was cheaper for me to to not bundle.

My internet price never changed when I dropped TV. Actually, and quite surprisingly, I'm not charged any extra fees for my internet connection. The price was listed as $60/month and that's exactly what I'm paying - no franchise fees, no taxes, or anything else added on like I saw when cable TV was on my bill.

Overpay even MOAR for the NBA! And buy the Hockey World Cup! And overpay for MOAR college sports in the coming years!

I think the only thing ESPN has cut lately has been the World Cup, and that's only because Fox may have been just as corrupt as FIFA in doing it. Of course, ESPN slid in and stole it from NBC in a backroom deal for the last couple so I don't feel too bad.

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

Don't most of these contracts have clauses about market penetration? "ESPN must be shown in X% of households" or they can opt out.

Read the article it's all about how ESPN agreed to reduce the percent from 90 to 80% in exchange for the last price hike and between cord cutting and people choosing plans without ESPN more and actually pushing it to 80ish they are losing subscribers.

Which contracts are you talking about? I see no reason why any of the sports leagues would dream of giving their overpayment back. They don't care about market penetration as long as they get money.

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

ESPN is hurting right now. It sounds like they are down to bare bones staff.

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

Both my wife and I are p*ssed. Great writing for both sports and entertainment, and I love reading their hockey coverage.

I wouldn't worry too much. Other Sports!Sports!Sports!Sports! outlets will fill that void when the writers are laid off.

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

The sports bubble has to be coming soon, right? ESPN is paying so much for rights to broadcast things they don't have the money to pay people to cover them.

Well, I should rephrase that. They don't have money to pay people to cover them through actual journalism. We'll still be treated to the wonderful back-and-forth of Stephen A and Skip and the seventeen NFL shows.

NBA rights are about to explode, Big Ten rights are going to explode, and the NFL certainly isn't getting any cheaper. ESPN is going to have to give something up or they'll have no employees.

I think it's like $6 they are getting from cable/dish companies to carry the channel. That cannot last, with all the cord-cutters.

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

It'll hit as soon as people cut the cord in earnest. There's too many people who are currently saying, "I'd cut the cord but for live sports."

I also think as more people stream directly from the leagues themselves, there will be more pressure applied to shorten some of the tv timeouts back to what they used to be 20 years ago.
