St.Thomas new arena on hold!

The ruling is primarily procedural, dealing not at all with the substantive arguments about whether arena construction is appropriate in this urban environment.

The ruling says you have to get all of your procedural ducks in a row before you can do this project.

The neighbors plan to now plunge into the substantive with a request for injunctive relief to halt construction.

Again, all this crap because some as**ole doesn't want it in HIS backyard.

I repeat, so far this is all procedure. The neighbors say they are about to request substantive relief. I personally don't think that makes any of them as**oles but I do agree they are not very likely to prevail in their attempt to stop the arena. I don't think the substance is in their favor and that is probably why to this point they have hung their hats on procedure.

I agree with you, but that opinion is likely in the minority these days, where anyone who has a dissenting view is open to all sorts of abuse. I've been to city council meetings in support of neighbors a few times over the decades, and it is difficult to take a stand against the big money projects, even when all of the zoning and laws are on your side.

Watched a Big Ten VB match last night where R2 got confused during a tOSU challenge, ruled that a PSU shot was out as the Buckeyes were claiming, but then proceeded on the path that would have been taken had the ball been in. For some reason, none of the other officials nor the coaches caught the error in real time, a few more points were played, and finally, an official at the table pointed out the problem. Once points have been played with the wrong team serving and in the wrong rotation, you can't truly put everything back to how it should be. Initially, tOSU got the very short end, but after they tried to rectify things, Penn State got a circumstance that was worse than had the correct call been made initially. In the St. Thomas case, it seems better to figure out whether you can legally put an arena in a location before you start firing up the Zamboni. Speak now or forever hold your peace, and all that.

About the screw-up in volleyball: there are 'official' officials at the scorer's table who wear the same polo shirts as the on-floor officials (last night they were wearing blue). The person at the scorer's table who informed the on-floor referee (the 'down ref') about the mistake was NOT one of those official officials. This morning, I asked on the volleyball version of this chat forum if anyone knew who she was, and what 'authority' she had to even be calling the down ref over to talk. But I didn't get any answers. It's a good thing for everyone that the down ref's mistake ended up not really affecting the overall outcome, but it surely could have.

(Some of the 'old folks' on the web site who have been VB fans longer than I knew of such mistakes that have ended up causing a match to be declared 'no contest', but apparently the rules that made that a possibility are no longer in effect(?).)
