St. Thomas has announced that they've been invited to join The Summit League, a nine-team D1 conference. They've applied for a waiver to reclassify from DIII to DI without reclassifying as DII and then reclassifying again as a DII going to DI.
While three Summit League schools play men's DI hockey in the NCHC, none of those schools (Denver, Omaha and North Dakota) have women's teams. The closest D1 fit for the Tommies women, an elite DIII hockey program, appears to be the WCHA.
