St. Thomas 2023-2024

Home opener against Franklin Pierce was a sign of good things to come, a 7 - 2 victory. After a split last year against the Ravens, the freshman heavy roster came out buzzing. The two goals given up were on the power play. If they can stay out of the penalty box, this will be an exciting season. Next week they play Lindenwood, so that will help slot where the Tommies might fit in between Wisconsin and Bemidji. Their official WCHA season will start the week after, against the Gophers, on the big stage of the Xcel Center in St. Paul. Now all the speculation and talk will get put to the test. Drop the puck!

Excited to see this Tommie thread. On the game feed last night, there was the stat that 6 of the first nine goals were by freshman. I don’t know how it finished, but that is some strong production from newcomers.

Even though it was Franklin Pierce, the Tommies swept with a 5 - 2 win on Saturday. They have a lot of freshmen on the roster, and these players made some impressive plays in the home opener exhibition games. Ella Boerger will be a name to watch.
Joel Johnson looks to be building for the future, and they will be giving headaches to any team that takes them lightly. Lots of top notch Minnesota high school players, along with the veterans from last season. They also added a goaltender from the Gophers, Olivia King, who got the win on Saturday. Definitely going to be some crosstown rivalry here!
I don't go in for predicting how many wins this team might get this year, but they will definitely be worth the price of admission.

Tommies take the series. 4-3 and 7-2. 1st yr players continue to score at a good pace. (I think it’s 15/23 goals.). Not related to St. Thomas but, ooof; Lindenwood has another second game of series letdown. Not as bad as the Wisconsin series, but still….

St. Thomas must be pleased with the start of the new season. The freshmen are sparking the offense and they get a seasoned goaltender from the U of M. Their homestand continues with a grinding schedule: the Gophers first on 'neutral ice' at the Xcel Center, then in Mendota Heights; Ohio State comes next; then the Badgers. After that taste of WCHA power, they will visit Duluth, which really put some hurt on them last season after losing in a shootout at Amsoil Arena. This will be a team to watch.

Well, so much for momentum and neutral ice. The Gophers are dominant in St. Paul with an eight to nothing beat down. Abbey Murphy proving to be a one woman wrecking crew with a hat trick in the first 25 minutes of the game. She gets a lot of flack about her attitude but she will be someone to watch whenever and wherever she is on the ice.
Next these two teams play at the Tommies arena in Mendota Heights. We will see if home ice settles them down, or if the Gophers are that good. Some good things from the freshmen on this St. Thomas roster promise future success if they can avoid shell shock from facing the top four teams in the WCHA to start conference play. We will see what tomorrow brings.

#7 for the tommie bahamas with a dangerous hit on Laitinen of the tunnelers in game 1 that could have been more than a minor. And an absolutely stupid contact to head penalty and ejection from the game at the end of the 2nd period of this afternoon's game. Power play goal was scored off that game one penalty and the major allowed the tunnelers to get going with a goal in a scoreless game that was pretty competitive.

A much more competitive game than the final score would indicate. After the Friday game at the Xcel, who would guess a 1 - 0 game after 50 minutes? The Gophers eventually wore down the Tommies who lost their speed player to a major penalty as noted above. The Achilles heel for this St. Thomas team may be the inability to score on the power play. That was the case last year, and they got very few shots off when they did have a power play. This will be a grueling start to their season, but the pieces are starting to get placed for a competitive future.

This weekend’s series was less fun to watch than the previous two. But the 1st year players continue to pace the scoring at 15 of 23 goals. (And yes, I get the irony of that statement.).

On to next weekend!

The Tommies play Ohio State tomorrow at 3pm CT. (I don’t think my employer will see much productivity then.)

I would be shocked with a win. But… my hope is they convert on the chances they get. Give me a chance to cheer!

I'll say this, that your program has been on the upswing and you have a very capable coach and his assistants. And when you have the new arena it should really help cement things.

Tommies dropped both games. 3 goals were scored. #7 Sajevic had two of the three. (She’s got some jets out there- very fast.). So by my count, 1st year players have 17 of 26 goals.

Next up is Wisconsin. So, I’ll have an opinion on who the #1 team is.

Is someone going to have a chat with Sajevic soon? Two dirty game misconducts in a five game stretch is a real red flag.

I would hope Tracy Dill or someone at the WCHA office would issue a suspension. Every week I'm seeing suspensions for similar violations inn the eastern conferences. Simply no place for this kind of BS in college women's hockey.

She is 5'3", so on the short side, fast, and has had a history of success on ice. Maybe she feels somewhat entitled to overcompensate?
Quite right that this needs to stop.

Again Tommies dropped both games, to UMD. I’ve no commentary as I didn’t watch any of first game and only had partial eye on game 2. Next game on Thursday. Good opportunity here.
