St.Norbert @ UW-Stout: 10/30 - 10/31 - Nothing Scarier Than 'The Dunn Co. Ice Palace'

I had a feeling Hopper might end up being the guy at Stout. Dude has like four years of experience in the USHL. You've gotta have some skills to see playing time in goal in that league as a 16 year old.

Also, while certainly a drop off from the play of Kyle Jones, I wouldn't say SNC's goaltending was terrible last season. There were just some times where they needed the big save and it didn't happen. Look at O'Brien and Bashor's numbers from last year, most goalies would love to have those stats (particularly Bashor's.) Sometimes the rotating platoon can be had for guys to get in good grooves, sometimes it works well. Obviously the coaching staff still has some confidence that one of them can step up and be "the guy" as evidenced by them not bringing in another Keeper this season...

We'll know more tomorrow. :D

Shots were 40-21 in favor of SNC? I'm somewhat surprised by that difference.

For those who might not be able to make it ---

#11 St.Norbert @ #3 UW-Stout -- 7:30 p.m. CT -- Live Streaming Video here

Tried hooking-up the streamline video for last night's game & it would break-up constantly ... annoying as h%**. Anyone have the same problem????

Friday night game recap:
Pre Game -- 1: Great crowd...packed. Playoff atmosphere...Student section was rocking 30 minutes prior to the drop of the puck. Students came with an interesting prop....string of squirrrels hung between two hockey sticks. I'm sure prepared for the enjoyment of the SNC players.
We loved it!!!
Game action:
Period 1 --
Stout came out firing on all cylinders for the first 3 - 4 minutes.
The Knights were up to the challenge and gained the momentum outshooting the Devils by a substantial margin to the end of the period.
Stout freshman tender, Nick Hopper, looked sharp. He's got a great glove hand.
Period 2 -- The Devils came out and dominated the first half of the period, but could not get anything past O'Brien....in turn, the Knights had a couple good chances, but could not beat Hopper.
With roughly two minutes left in the period, Hopper collapsed on the ice in front of his goal, after making a great save. Assisted off by two of his teammates, he was done for the night. Appeared that he suffered a knee or leg injury.
Period 3 --
One of the best periods of hockey I have seen in quite some time. Intense back and forth action. Good chances by both squads, but O'Brien and the replacement Stout goalie, Tom Lescovich, were turning away all shots.
SNC finally scored the first tally of the game, midway through the period, on a slap shot from Adam Hammerbeck, with the assist going to Scott Pulak.
More intense action, as the clock ticked down. With a minute left, Stout pulled Lescovich to add the extra attacher. With the Blue Devil top line of Gaulrapp, Motz and Hanson on the ice, Stout looked to tie the game in the final seconds, but could not find the net. Shane Wheeler closed out the scoring with an empty netter in the final seconds to cap off the shutout for the Knights.
Post Game --
Without doubt, one of the most intense NCHA conference games, I have ever seen, especially for the opening game of the season....what will the rest of the games be like???
Today --
No doubt Stout needs to comeback today and get even with SNC with a victory. With the confidance that O'Brien gained in last night's game, plus the entire SNC team, how will they come out today?
Looking forward to another great battle!!

It indeed was a very intense game. Bodies were flying aplenty around the arena. UW-Stout will face some tough injuries as they head into game 2 tonight.

Nick Hopper (G) - Groin injury
Bobby Kuehl (D) - Lower body injury; he left the arena on crtuches
Jared Britton (F) - Spereated shoulder

This all in addition to former USCHO All-Star Matt Morin who is already out for the season and in the broadcast booth with me.

Lines will be shuffled and that will hurt UW-Stout. Passing looked terrible as SNC was able to clog the neutral zone well and UW-Stout could never get a decent rush on O'Brien. Most of Stout's shots were from the outside and SNC really blocked them out of the slot and other quality scoring areas well.

We need consistency and chemistry; the injuries will not help either situation at all.

O'Brien played well, the one play that stands out is he blanked the always dangerous Derek Hanson from six feet out in the slot, untouched and all alone. A little left-hand larceny and the score remained at zeros.

UW-Stout's PP was pretty solid last season, firing at 23%. The PP looked anemic at times for Stout and SNC did a solid job of killing the man advantage.

It will be an interesting game and interesting crowd as the students will be out in full costume tonight!

I thought you all would appreciate another look at SNC's goal against Lescovich.
