St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

So it's 3-2 RPI after 2 periods of play. I'm sorry if this offends people, but maybe this Ryan Lambert guy was onto something? Maybe we really aren't as good as our record shows? Maybe we have been lucky? ... Idk, but we just look awful this weekend!!! Even Kyle Hayton hasn't looked like himself. All three goals tonight he easily could have and should have stopped. Not a very impressed fan here at the moment. We play like this in two weeks and we are done and out in 2 games regardless of who we play!

As a former goalie and goalie coach, Hayton looks like he has some kind of an injury to me. His usual lateral movement and low game is superb. He looked like he was really struggling with his cuts this weekend low down and laterally, which is normally what he's so good at. I would bet 9 times out of ten he would have saved that penalty shot because that move plays right into his strength, but he looked a little slow on the play. He didn't look nearly as quick or sharp as I've seen him all year. Since the QU game he has taken a beating with many players crashing into him and I'm thinking he is playing hurt. I don't know this, but I strongly suspect it. Thank goodness we have a week off to rest up and get our act together.

I doubt it! Something like this would have came out by now, especially if it was an injury that would be able to affect his play that much. Besides, with the 2nd seed clinched and we literally can't go anywhere win or lose, if he was/is injured even in the slightest, then why play him? Why not pull him if we noticed he wasn't himself and letting in goals he normally stops? ... I don't know, it just seems like an injury doesn't mesh up quite right. If it is an injury then this bye week may turn out to be the most important bye week ever!!!

I'm just going to quote Aaron Rogers here.

R-E-L-A-X.

Step away from the ledge. If we get throttled a couple Fridays from now, THEN step to the ledge.

Couldn't agree more. This team has overachieved, at least on paper, the entire second half. It's been a fun ride, and Carvy will have them ready to play in two weeks. Saturday's game was meaningless. Glad they battled back in the third, and that flurry at the end almost gave us our tie. Congrats to the coaches and players for a great regular season, the best we've had in years.

Whatever will be, will be. I had a bad feeling going into this weekend because the real issue is how do you motivate a team that doesn't have anything to play for. Granted, on Friday night they maybe could have had a share of the Cleary Cup, but the game turned into a penalty fest against a team with a champions heart and some very good offensive players. Last night we had nothing to play for, it was Senior night at RPI, it's meaningless. And anyone that agrees with Lambert really needs to go see a proctologist to get their head removed from their ***. This team is fast, balanced, reasonably skilled and VERY young. The only thing that gives me any pause is that Hayton has given up 3 or more three goals in a row and has not been his usual sharp self since Harvard. But, he is a competitive kid and will refocus. He will have to because I have a sneaking suspicion that we will be playing Clarkson for a trip to LP. I think there may be at least one or two upsets in the first round with both Brown and Union capable of the upset.

This team hasn't quit all season. They have had some stretches where they could have played better but remember that this team has 15 freshmen and sophomores in the lineup every night and with a team that young there are going to be nights where you don't find your identity. If anyone wants to overlook what has been a great regular season with a fun team to watch and even mention that zipperhead Lambert is correct about anything, i'll neg rep you! ;-) I am not about to quit on a team that is 2 wins away from a 20 win season and a trip to LP, where, with their speed, anything could happen.

Finally, I have to believe if the major Dahl took was called correctly as a minor, SLU would have won Friday night. Even playing sloppy for two periods at Union we were still one shot away at the buzzer against the 3 time ECAC and defending NCAA champs who are undoubtedly better than their record. Take a deep breath. Get ready for some Saint hockey in 2 weeks.

I also find in very curious Hayton was even playing this weekend injured or not. This weekend was totally meaningless for us so I really don't understand why Coach didn't just give him the weekend off. I still think there's something wrong with him and I've noticed it since the Harvard game. Even when he was skating during stoppages he just didn't look right. Anyway, I hope all the boys get rested up and come out in two weeks playing the best hockey they can.

Carvel has said previously that Kyle is the type to want every single start, it's how he's wired. With the bye, I'm not shocked, although I suspected he would split the games with Parks.

Will be interesting to see how the 1st round unfolds next weekend. I think the only series that you can even pull out a pencil to write a winner is the Dartmouth/Princeton match up. The other 3 are all very possible upsets, which makes our potential opponent a complete crapshoot. Cornell/Clarkson/RPI is most likely, probably.

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

Given Hayton's record @ Cheel, you should decline the home ice advantage -- assuming we win, of course.

We could always revert back to our overall record at Cheel and then decide to keep home ice advantage as well ;) :)

Last weekend was not completely meaningless -- but it was not as meaningful as the run up to clinching a 2nd place bye. Two wins last weekend might have pushed us meaningfully up the Pairwise going into the playoffs and we could have played for a piece of the Cleary Cup. That said, I think these guys have played with such intensity over January and February to get the bye that a letup was almost inevitable. And Union seems to be peaking now, which is a little scary.

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

It's 3-0 RPI over Clarkson end of the 2nd. RPI is looking more and more like our opponent next weekend!

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

RPI stays in the NoCo.

On paper, we've got the least dangerous matchup. Still gotta get 'er done though.

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

Go SLU get'er done! RPI goalie stood on his head vs Saints in Albany, should be a good series.

When did we play RPI in Albany? I'm sure you're right just can't remember when (I'm getting old! lol).

He couldn't get into HFH, so he sat in a bar across the river (and slightly south). :p:D

We never made it to Albany. In fact, if you end up blowing a 13-year streak...
