Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

No, that's easy. I want Q to lose every game and if they could get negative points I'd be in favor of that.

I wouldn't mind them losing every game either, but our main goal at this point should be to get home ice and a first round bye. That would be huge for this team and if it means the Q wins some games against the teams just behind us, then so be it! I would rather finish have some breathing room between us and the 5th place slot than be close to 1st place. However, if we just win our own games then we will control our own destiny and it won't matter who else does what ... Let's Go Saints!!!

I look at it the exact opposite way. We need teams to make the NCAA's and right now without an autobid only two teams will make it. Yale and Colgate are on the cusp and dropping. Harvard is 1 and 3 in its last 4 games. As for the Saints, we control our own destiny. If we win every game we have left or enough of those games we will get a bye. That's all you can ask for. If it were the last weekend or two of the season, maybe I'd cross over. Yale is a real ECAC team, Q-Suck is not. Their coach is a complete tool. Further, right now, a Yale win helps our PWR. I realize it would take the stars to align big time to rise enough in the PWR to get a big without an autobid, but we won't get there by good teams we have beat losing. So, tonight I root for SLU, Yale, Cornell, and don't really care who wins between Union and Dartmouth although it is clear Union is starting to come on just in time for us to play them. And I hope Brown and Princeton tie because I hate both of them too. In the end, I hope Princeton and Q-Suck never win another game - EVER.

A few great games in the league tonight, yours included. Good luck as well.

Obviously far too much yet to happen, as far as final standings go. But I'll join Leckster in SLU/Yale/Cornell. I guess the only green I cheer for is Dartmouth, only because we have a win against them, but have to play Union twice still. After tonight, all teams will be at 14 GP, so it should be easier to look at who has what left.

Sources have confirmed that TimU will be joining me at the circus tonight.

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

Since 05/06, when the current ECAC lineup of teams came into being, 27 points has always earned a first round bye. With 18 points we are 9 away with 9 games to play. I like our chances.
It all starts with a huge win tonight!

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

What an absolutely ginormous effort and an absolutely ginormous win!!! They played their hearts out and battled right until the end against a good team. We now have beat Clarkson twice in one season at Cheel ... Has that ever happened? I am soooooo happy right now that I could just pee on the floor and start doing flip flops! Thank you Saints, you have no idea how good this one feels! :)

I believe that this is the first time that we have won two games in the same season in Potsdam, but have no idea how many seasons we've played at least two games over there. Don't feel bad - one of my two dogs peed on the floor when I screamed with delight at the final buzzer. The Saints hard work paid off in a big way tonight. This was a sweet victory in a place that has not been kind to the Saints over the years.

Yes it is the first time this has ever happened. Right after I posted that the recap for the game came out and finalized that one. What a nice accomplishment because, as you pointed out, we never seem to have much luck in that place. This was a great night for us and this fan is a very happy camper right now! :)

Nice W. Better team (by a whole bunch) won tonight. For an example why, here is the 2nd period shot chart.

I hope you can see it.

Thanks Joe! That was a **** good win against a **** good team. I thought Clarkson looked tougher by far than any team we have played in 2015. Congrats to all the boys in Canton. It's never easy and the Saints didn't make it easy on the fans tonight with two penalties late. Clarkson could not match SLU's speed and you can see that offense is their achilles heal. On their own PP I can't believe how much time they wasted setting it up in their own end. I think SLU was clearly the better team tonight even though Clarkson had some really good stretches in the 3rd especially. Great pinch and assist for Masella on the GW. Good game by Hayton. Good game all the way around. I am happy but I am probably more relieved. I told Carvy after we broke the crap streak that Brown had on us until this season that it's time to start a new era with Clarkson too. Tonight hopefully starts that. That's a team I'd rather not see again. Here's hoping they can hammer Union next week and tire them out.

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

Whew. Great win over a very good team in another classic battle of the North Country. Great turnout by the Saints fans as well.

Where to begin? That was just a very smart, mostly efficient and mostly crisp road game. Weathered a few storms by Clarkson, controlled some good stretches and the TEAM DEFENSE was fantastic down the stretch. Hayton was fantastic, yet again, and oh... in his first 2 starts AT Cheel as a freshman, he's given up 1 goal that squirted through 6 bodies and snuck past him. We are worthy of a bye, it's up to the guys to secure it.

I find it funny, how a LOT of people were "Lewis and Clarkson's team defense!!!!" (I'm looking at you, Brian Sullivan, WDT pre-game article, etc), and yet... SLU's statistically better in both offense and defense . Oh well, maybe some day the prognosticators will see what we see, and that's a very solid, all-around capable team built from the net out.

As always, it was great catching up with you Tim, glad you decided to come over and ecstatic that the boys made it worth the trip.

Great post. As for the master prognosticators Sullivan and Owen....I laugh at them every week and thought their blog was meant for humor. They are utterly clueless and obviously haven't seen this team play. Our PK has gone from worst to extremely good and our team defense is why this team is in 2nd. Lots of hockey left, with four tough road games and four tough home games. Honestly, after they get a good but a bit lucky goal and them Bruckel gets stopped on a great feed by Masella I thought we were in for a long night. Glad I was wrong. Let's hope Clarkson can pound some teams on the next 8 four Friday nights.

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

So, with all the teams now at 14 GP and 8 to play, here is a breakdown of who has who left:

1. Quinnipiac (23 pts)- @Cornell/@Colgate, SLU/Clarkson, Yale/Brown, @Harvard/@Dartmouth
2. SLU (20)- RPI/Union, @Quinnipiac/@Princeton, Harvard/Dartmouth, @Union/@RPI
3. Harvard (18)- @Yale/@Brown, Colgate/Cornell, @SLU/@Clarkson, Quinnipiac/Princeon
4. Clarkson (16)- Union/RPI, @Princeton/@Quinnipiac, Dartmouth/Harvard, @RPI/@Union
5. Yale (16)- Harvard/Dartmouth, @Union/@RPI, @Quinnipiac/@Princeton, Colgate/Cornell

As it is every year, this is shaping up to go down to the last 10 minutes of the last game of the season. #2-9 are separated by just 6 points still.

Just keep on winning, Saints.

Same here. Thanks for giving me the nudge. It was worth the drive.

What a game by SLU. It's funny, when that first goal went in, Brandon and I looked at each other and pretty much shrugged it off. It just felt like we would be OK based on the play up to that point. And it continued for the entire period. In the last few minutes of the third I remember saying that I didn't feel good about an extra attacker situation, because Clarkson was putting such good pressure on us 5x5. So what happened? SLU just didn't let Lewis out of his net for over a minute. Then they won two huge faceoffs and ran out the clock. Overall, it's been a looooong time since I felt so comfortable about a game over there, especially such a close one. There was no panic, everybody looked energized and loose, SLU kept on making smart play after smart play. I also liked that there was plenty of emotion but nobody (on either side) lost control of it.

There are starting to be some recurring themes with these guys. Anyone who was at the Dartmouth game remembers all the puck battles that SLU won right before Dahl scored the GWG. Well last night, Tommy Thompson won a battle along the wall and pushed the puck into the corner. Clarkson managed to get a stick on it and send it back up the boards. Thompson stopped it, won possession a second time, and sent it in deep again. Another loose puck win and a nice feed later, Doherty buries a wrist shot and it's 1-1. The other thing I'm starting to notice is all the shots these guys block. It feels like we are usually the ones shooting pucks straight into skates and legs - all of a sudden it's SLU that's getting in front of everything.

Bottom line: against a tough team in a tough venue, St. Lawrence was just the better team last night and played like it start to finish. When the defense broke down, Hayton bailed them out, but it didn't happen that much. And SLU had 4 or 5 great looks at the net that either went just wide or were stopped by very good saves.

Great win Saints! Since I am not an Alum, but a SLU fan (daughter SLU '03- I'm still paying to that privilege). I have a couple of nice things to say about Clarkson - nice, free HD feed 'thank you' and the CU announcers had good things to say about SLU esp their speed and defense. Best of luck for the rest of the way you # 11 team. You are a pleasure to watch and root for.

Re: St. Lawrence University: Big Time, Old Time Hockey 2014-15

Well it's February, which means all ECAC games this month are huge for playoff position. The Saints host RPI and defending national champs Union this weekend. While much focus will center on the defending champs who appear to be playing better recently, SLU can not look past RPI.

This will be the first matchup of the year for these squads. RPI has been a hard team to pin down. They have some big wins against Notre Dame, Union, Dartmouth, Cornell and Colgate. They have some stinkers too like losing to Brown.

SLU can not afford any let down after their big win at Cheel on Saturday.
